Vertex paint assigns color attributes directly to each vertices. Texture paint assigns color to pixels in image that maps to the UV of the mesh.

Vertex paint also has a feature called dirty vertex colors which has some interesting uses for painting in edge and cavity detection on the fly. You can fake ambient occlusion really well with this feature.

If that is the explanation and there are no other major explanations then it is a very good one, believable and easy to understand, thank you.

Ian, very well done. I don't use Blender but it did clear out something for me, so you were really helpful here.

Yes, thnks for this ..Wen learning Blender so much new information can be overwhelming. This sorts out on of my many questions.

I use vertex paint now for static mesh in UE5, no uv no low poly no baking!

Hello, can you explain to me the difference between vertex paint and texture weight? Does it have to do with how it renders and which we choose to render with? When do you use either and can we mix for our stylized character. Also, should I render in Eevee or cycle? I am making a 3-5 minute animation of my stylized character dancing to music. Which do you recommend? Btw I like your video!

So what is the relationship between vertex paint/color and materials?

Hi, Ian. I'm currently learning 3D modeling with Blender. I made a couple of models that are fairly good looking but I abused dyntopo while sculpting them. I stumbled upon your channel while looking for ways to paint a model without doing retopo (since it's apparently imperative to do before texture painting) and I have a question about vertex painting: are these messy mesh models 3D printable? I had a great experience creating my first models, but retopo is just ruining it. Can I accomplish my goals without ever having to retopo? :(

yes! There are actually ways to automatically apologize that don't suck. :) i would recommend looking into the remesh modifier.
