This video shows students how to make a textured slab plate on a mold- from plastic to cleaning leatherhard forms. This is a beginner level video- made for my high school students in Ceramics II to help them with their textured slab projects.

The molds are in my storefront!
I am a high school ceramics teacher and potter. I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZbin channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!

How would you be able to attach a plate mold like this to a stand ?

Thank you for your teaching. On the slump hump mould.. How do you remove the player residue from the clay? I hear that plaster can make the clay explode in the kiln.

If the mold is clean, no plaster residue is left! If I would see something visible, I would just rub it out!

I should say- if I ever use cornstarch that need not be removed- that burns out!

I actually never did glaze that one- I just have it as a bisque example in my classroom! I do have a video on how I show the kids how to glaze their textured slab sets though! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jnexXoWqrNeXmKc

Diane- Not really too sure where I got those blue ones a few years ago... Probably just an art supplier from an art catalog- I just try to nab things when I see them! Try googling texture roller, roller stamp, etc. I know Amaco makes a really nice line of them! You can also make your own by carving a leatherhard roller! www.dickblick.com/products/amaco-clay-texture-rollers/ www.theceramicshop.com/store/category/40/227/Texture-Rollers/MKM-Rollers/

Hi Patricia! Oh, great question! I have been collecting them for years! The price has luckily come down in recent years for these types of things. Now many are made of silicone which makes them cheaper to produce I believe! Many of mine I have bought as baking texture mats. I have a bunch of them now listed on my Googledoc with Amazon links. Many I purchased from my local pottery supplier- Cornell Studio Supply (Their contact info is toward the bottom of that Googledoc) and, also I have bought them from various online suppliers like Dick Blick, School Specialty, and other suppliers for schools. (Just price check- some of those are really expensive!) . Here is a direct link to my Googledoc if it will help you! :) . I add things to it all the time... so it is always live and changing! :) docs.google.com/document/d/1XbYPQjjJnHrQG5xyWGMHZkEcZj5N8VnUAbFZdJRrRmU/edit?usp=sharing

At school with my students, (and in the video) I use Standard 153 stoneware. It's a lovely tan firing stoneware at come 6. At home I use grogged Laguna B mix- a creamy white stoneware.

It’s a hump mould. Not a slump hump mould. It’s only slump when you put it inside the mould.

Hi Paula! You’re right I misspoke. I was using it as a hump mold. However, they are purchased as a slump-hump mold because it’s a two piece mold... When I purchased them from my supplier that’s what they were called! :)

Love the demo, I have done a few dishes etc in this fashion, but when left to dry they tend to bow in the middle. Any tips on keeping them flat please? Thankyou x
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 5 жыл бұрын
Hi June- yes- I recommend trying to flip them on their rims when you dry them- maybe covering with a towel so they dry slowly and evenly. The slowness is key to keeping them even when drying. When one part drys more quickly than another, that is when warping and bowing may occur. I hope that helps! :)
