You know when the equalizer is really good? Mannpower, not only do you have a grappling hook which give you a lot of mobility, combined with Knockout and being at 1 health you can 1 shot anything.

I would give it some sort of passive damage resistance when active. Edit: I have an idea for the equalizer; It should reward you for playing DEFENSIVELY and standing your ground whereas the opposite of this is the escape plan which is used for escaping danger. I talk about the stats in my second comment on this comment if you wanna see my idea for the weapon.

@@Spanishdog17 ehh I think the speed boost would be not diverse enough, I was thinking the equalizer should be like the opposite of the escape plan, in which it offers resistance and extra damage at the cost of speed. For example: The new equalizer could keep its unique stat of doing more damage the lower your health is, but at full health, it would do the normal stock 65 damage. Then it can have something like the lower your health is, your passive damage resistance to all sources increase; To balance this, you could have a -25% movement speed while it is active, have a 25% lower swing speed to balance out the damage, and of course the valve staple of "no random crits" for good measure oh and don't forget the healing penalty from medics. I am going for a more defensive weapon that rewards you for standing your ground; where the escape plan is meant for running away, the equalizer I feel, should make you stand your ground. I mean, the opposite of running away is facing the danger head on right?

I mean, Heavy's pretty well shown us with the Fists of Steel that that sort of concept can work really well on high HP classes like himself and Soldier. If it were me I'd take inspiration to make soldierified version of them: give him high resistance to ranged damage, high weakness to melee damage, and something like the Zatoichi's honorbound mechanic to lock him into the melee fight once it's out, on top of the old the damage scaling mechanic and overheal debuff. That way enemies will be needing to come to you to get a kill, making it a proper melee fight where you can enjoy the increased damage, or a getaway tool relying on resistance instead of speed in contrast to the escape plan.

Both weapons exist and the Equalizer is pretty decent. +15% base damage bonus +Damage increases as the users becomes injured -On Miss: Hit yourself. Idiot -25% slower firing speed That brings the base melee damage from 75 at full health to about 123. It works now as both the rework you mention and as a tool to build charge.

I believe a good adjustment of the stats for both picks to make it actually hard choosing one of them is to Give the Escape Plan a damage penalty Have the Equalizer's damage be 65 at max health while still retaining the same max damage at low health.

Here's how to balance: Pros: Damage goes up as health goes down: When active: grants a flat 10% damage resistance that goes up to 35% resistance as health goes down. Cons: When active: cannot be targeted by medigun beams. Health Packs cannot be collected while health is above 60%

Good point here but I might have better options. Base damage bonus will break the meta no matter what downsides it has unless it makes weapon unusable or restricted to some very specific scenarios, I think damage-wise this thing should stay the same or have 3-4 stages (full health, below 2/3, below half, below 1/3 for example) with max damage of 90-ish and without any base damage reduction like it is right now, it deals with 3 problems at once, so that you don't have do be killed easier than a mosquito to deal max damage and at the same time not be able to deal insane damage once you are 1 hp and the weapon now is more predictable (a little indicator near the crosshair while it's active would be neat). Also I think swing speed would negate damage buff if not mathematically then for sure fun-wise, it would be too boring or even frustrating to use since it's a general purpose damage dealer and not burst damage/utility weapon like other melees with reduced swing speed (market gardener or ubersaw for instnce) instead what it needs is damage vulnerability for every damage type except for melee while active (since there is no speed bonus that would help you abuse damage buff and the weapon is already hp based and doesn't help you escape, so it should be somewhat a threat unless you are far away where soldier can deal damage without hurting himself). So, in a few words my version doesn't affect your melee effectiveness unless you are wounded, but it makes you vulnerable when you are not close to the enemy where you couldn't deal melee damage anyway. That follows the original idea of a weapon encouraging you to attack as your last hope better than what we have right now and also it theoretically is much more fun and fair to use than your version, since missing half hp isn't going to balance out a whopping 90 damage.

Actually you can survive with just the battalion's and an overheal. The taunt does exactly 300 self-damage. There is also the cheeky tactic of doing the taunt below the bridges on Suijin, to make the grenade just barely clip through the thin floor and prevent you from taking damage.

While this allows the soldier to potentially go on a murderous melee rampage, the slow-as-molasses swing speed and inability to heal means if you miss a single attack, you die. (The 2-second heal delay after holstering the weapon is to make sure you can't quick-switch around a medic or dispenser to become invincible, and the crit bypass is to not dick over spies and snipers.)

I would just go all in on the concept and increase the damage around the board. at full health it would still do less, but you could get to normal damage faster, and at 1 health you should be able to some absolutely nutty damage (e.g.1 shot a heavy)

This weapons only use right now is building uber and not marking yourself for death. Maybe add a damage bonus based on the amount of rockets left in your clip instead of HP? Negative damage on 4 loaded rockets, and bonus on 1 or 0 loaded rockets.

It's binary. It's a switch that you can flip off which is what competitive servers have been doing since basically the dawn of time. The balance changes would only be positive as Spy no longer gets fucked by their existence, Sniper can no longer invalidate his biggest weakness, Medics can no longer get out of jail free and take 25 Uber with them for their troubles, and Demos, Soldiers, Pyros and Heavies can no longer wipe out half of a team for clicking at the right time while other classes get to maybe win a 1v1 for free. The only possible negative effect is that weapons with the "No Random Critical Hits" attribute would no longer have said attribute. The weapons that have this attribute are as follows and I'll go over whether or not removing random crits would make any difference in their use going up. - Back Scatter (trash) - Flying Guillotine (banned in competitive, but that's because it can fuck up rollouts at no cost to the Scout using it) - Cow Mangler (also banned, but that's because of the infinite ammo pool and lack of buildings to fight against) - Market Gardener (too difficult to use to see an increase in use were random crits to be removed) - Phlogistinator (yes, more Pyros might use this) - Manmelter (trash and all the other flare guns get crits anyway) - Axtinguisher (the Powerjack exists and is much more reliable for the majority of situations, even serving the Axtinguisher's role as a finisher by giving health on kill) - Neon Annihilator (one of the most situational weapons in the entire game) - Every single Demoknight weapon (I guess people would use the Skullcutter less?) - Ullapool Caber (trash unless you use it with a shield anyway) - Frontier Justice (purely defensive Engineer is too powerful to trade it away for potentially guaranteed crits all the time) - Short Circuit (already outclasses the Pistol even with random crits) - Gunslinger (primarily used for its Battle Engie utility much more than as an actual melee weapon) - Southern Hospitality (more Engineers MIGHT use this, but it's honestly such an inconsequential upside that I can hardly see it being imbalanced) - Cleaner's Carbine (trash) - Bushwacka (everyone already uses it anyway, but that has more to do with Jarate than anything else, people who don't use Jarate would still probably run stock or Shahanshah) - Ambassador (everyone certainly thinks it's trash, also falls into a similar situation to the Market Gardener) - Enforcer (trash) - Diamondback (already overpowered even with random crits on the other revolvers) It's a throwaway stat almost exclusively reserved for weapons that already have some means of dealing critical hits or mini-crits. Those weapons are either shit, have one or more downsides that makes them more than balanced to fight against even without random crits, are very similar to their stock counterparts, or they're the Phlog and Diamondback. Those last two are the biggest problems, but that's because they reward you with crits far too easily. Play on any server that has random crits turned off for an extensive period of time and you won't notice any negative difference in balance. You'll just die less to unpredictable bullshit.

Will you do the Pyro's Back Scratcher melee? I know it isn't exactly bad per se, having some use, that being a quite lethal melee ( +25%, doing 81 damage a swing) and allowing for 50% more healing from health packs, but it also completely removes any and all ability to heal via medic, giving you a 75% negative to healing from all other sources for just having it equipped. This does allow for easy uber building as you heal slower, but if you want an actual heal, you're better running off to a medkit and healing 75% max health or so.

This weapon is literally the result of a messy divorce. The Escape Plan got the kids, and the Equalizer got the dog. The Escape Plan even ditched her husband's surname. Since then, the Equalizer has been too slow to keep up, and he's become more self destructive than before. But I suppose that when you give up half your money, getting equalized is rough.

And if you're that obsessed with safe close range kills then use shotgun. And if you do have low health, it's a direct upgrade, if you're into trying to melee people with Soldier (without escape plan) which is a death wish fighting against any decently skilled player

Give... It... Lifesteal! IMO That'd be the absolute perfect way to make it a better weapon. It's theme of going aggressive when you're low on health would be made all the more relevant if attacking enemies on low health is directly how you survive. Maybe add a melee damage vulnerability while active, to stop it auto-winning every melee duel even against Demoknights (or in Medieval Mode). But other than that I'd say that'd be perfect. The Half Zatoichi wouldn't be too similar ether since the Equalizer's lifesteal would heal on hit while the Zato is a 100% full heal but only on-kill.

problem is, increasing your own health means now dealing less damage again, which would make the weapon hinder itself. Maybe some sort of buffer against damage or damage resistance instead?

@@defensivekobra3873 honestly, i think that's a perfect way to balance lifesteal, "equalizing" your damage with your health. You heal a lot more at low health, but you can't heal as much on subsequent swings

Theory: keep the current stats, but make the damage buff and nerf ludicrous. Raise it to like 300 damage at 1 hp and like 20 damage at full

This is what I was thinking. I would want something that I could at least spend all of my health to get someone in one shot. Making it do more than the gardener could make it a cool trade off for sac plays, but only works if you spend your entire clip doing massive damage to yourself. Could work really well with manntreads as well.

The Escape Plan speed buff is incremental like the Shahanshah, so it’s kind of weird that the Equalizer is gradual.

@@danielsurvivor1372 The Shahanshah and Escape Plan give set buffs depending on if you're below or above a certain amount of health, the Equalizer it's progressive and every Health Point lacking will increase the damage a bit

Actually, I liked your idea, sounds like the escape plan is the soldier's GRU (when it used to mark you for death) and the equalizer works like the steel fists Endurance vs mobility

Here's my take: Instead of the damage being affected by health, it's holster, unholster, and cooldown times are affected. Being at low health lets you makes it easy for you to tag players the moment they get into range, rather than making it easier to close the range.
