Team Fortress 2's Spy has been requested for Which Ninja for a LONG time now, and it's easy to see why. A lot of his cosmetics definitely give him a shinobi vibe. But just how ninja is TF2's international man of mystery? And how closely related ARE ninja and our modern take on spies?

Something else that’s probably just a neat conjecture more than actual evidence, but after the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate’s isolation party France spent the next 40 years consuming Japanese art and culture. Odds are if you find a piece of French art from that period that isn’t either impressionist or expressionist, it’s going to be either mimicking a Japanese style (especially woodcuts) or portraying Japanese objects as a major part of the subject matter (for example, portraits of French women wearing Kimonos). Given that period of obsession with Japan, it’s not implausible to think that some military or intelligence officers may have tried to adopt some ninja or ninja adjacent techniques for training their espionage agents. Spy would then have benefited from that training as well, albeit many decades latter. However, while fun to think about and plausible, this little historical based theory is very improbable. Just thought that would be a nice little historical-cultural tidbit to share.

Ever hear about Le Risastance? When France submitted to Nazi Occupation with little persuasion, there were many citizens who did not. Many of their strategies and tactics have direct parallels to ninja tactics. Paris in particular has a hidden underbelly, the Catacombs, that allowed resistance fighters to seem to vanish into thin air. French ninja suddenly don't seem to far fetched. And since TF2 is set in the height of the cold war, you KNOW where spy got his skills from.
@maximsavage
@maximsavage 6 жыл бұрын
MrSailing101 It's spelled "La Résistance". It literally translates to "The Resistance". And yes, I agree with you, guerrilla warfare tends to incorporate ninja-like techniques since remaining undetected is crucial to such fighting.

funny thing is about that sun tzu quote is you should do pretty much the exact opposite of what it implies for spy players. a low health soldier will be more attentive on their return to get health, and more importantly, will be looking backwards. trying to sneak past him or get a backstab will only result in you being spychecked and possibly killed. either steer clear of low health enemies or if you know the map well, flank to the health kit they're going to, approach from the side, and shoot them instead.
@ViceN53X

My God. Ever since I saw both this video and Lazy's video, I actually improved on playing spy in terms of staying hidden. Depending on how much space is in the map, as well as the lack of Pyros, I am actually able to slip past people by staying invisible in the middle of the group. And regarding your video on how to play Genji pretty well, not only did I know the map enough, but I also know hiding spots that no one in the game suspects, as well as routes I can take to make a getaway. The only struggle I have is landing my back stabs. I'm not very good at aiming.

This was so good! Also the Dead Ringer is similar to the decoy/substitution tactic ninjas used by making fake bodies to distract enemies. The box trot strategy is great for the Spy’s version of Snakes box disguise which makes me think of the hiding tapestry trick as well. It can take a while for new players to develop a ‘spy sense’ to check for players so the part about taking advantage of those less skilled makes perfect sense! Best part was referencing LazyPurples video, he’s one of the most seasoned veterans and I’m glad to see him being a source of knowledge in TF2!

Not to mention that the Spy NEVER removes his mask and his true identity is a complete mystery, both to his teammates and even to us, the players! Subsequent TF2 comics and tie-in videos have revealed the real names of several of the characters (ex. the Demoman's real name is Tavish DeGroot), but not the Spy's.
@M4x_P0w3r
@M4x_P0w3r 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but maybe the fact that he never removes his mask works against him. In a TF2 comic, Spy is working in a shopping mall still wearing his mask. That makes him stand out instead of making him less noticeable

Absolutely. Hair dye, colored contact lens, make-up, a wig, sunglasses, a hat (fitting for TF2 isn't it?), anything that gives him a "natural" appearance while still disguising his real. If you knew, for example, that he's pale, blond with blue eyes, you wouldn't look for a tanned, brunette guy with dark eyes, right?

One more item you forgot about was the Spy's 'Dead Ringer' watch. With it activated, any hit causes him to cloak, and a fake Spy to be dropped, in the hope that the enemy believes that they have dealt with him. A clear use of the Kawarimi no Jutsu (Body Replacement Technique).

Another point in Spy's favor is the fact we never see his full face. Just a little bit of his mouth, no defining hairstyle, only a bit of his eyes. In the comics we get the tiniest peek under the mask when he and Scout are in jail, and he lifts up only the bottom of his mask to shave.

I think noh mask is so popular because it has a smile and as mad Jack from world war II said if you smile at somebody they're less likely to shoot you if you're in a situation where there's a lot of danger and fear already there somebody's smiling at you makes you more upset confused and scared

Personally one of my favorite ninjas is the Disney version of Tarzan. Hear me out, if you re-watch the old movie you'll see that he is actually really skilled with keeping to the shadows and moving around without notice. Add that to his ability to us his environment to his advantage, ability to copy sounds, behaviors of other animal, and so on.

Spy has a plenty of items that a ninja would prefer(and not the reskins) for their abilities 3. There is a youtuber who was a spy main (before he changed to medic) and he had a series of videos called "How a spy thinks". And in that series he provides tips and tricks for players to become a better spy, with example footages.

You forgot to add in Spy's sabotage features as well. Sabotage was safer than assassination and could create the distractions needed to complete a mission. You sabotage a turret or vending machine and the engineer leaves the front line to investigate.

Here's a bit of a throwback bit of knowledge. when Ninja need to perform jobs of assassination, they'll try to hide the body from direct line of sight to buy themself as much time as humanly possible while they make their getaway. in TF2, this technique manifests as a bonus ability of the special dagger "Your Eternal Reward" which does a few things when you backstab an enemy. It immediately disguised you as the enemy you stabbed. It doesn't produce a kill message to the rest of the game to basically out that there's a spy lurking. and finally, it deletes the enemy's body ragdoll from play. Hiding the body in the event that you get found out, but gives you time to make your getaway amidst the sudden influx of chaos to try and figure out where you are

You did your research and I applaud you. *TAKE A HINT, MATPAT!* (I did notice one error and that was you said a spy disguised as medic needs to be healing people when spy can't heal people even if he is disguised as medic. That being said, a medic with his medigun in hands instead of his syringe gun is less likely to get spychecked so you aren't entirely wrong.)

The spy can also sabotage guards that cover a wide area (sentries), sabotage the enemy's supplies (dispensers), and also sabotage their transportation to the battlefield (teleporters). Any bits of that in the Ninja Bible if i might ask?

When you think about it ninjas and spies are very similar. They sneak into enemy territory to gather information, items or assasinate people.

It's possible there might be a connection between Fuu-Ki and hanya masks being associated with ninja. Consider the following profile he has in Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (as well as a few other games in the Shin Megami Tensei series): "One of the four oni controlled by Fujiwara no Chikata, it sends hurricanes to blow away its enemies. Some say that Fuu-ki is the original ninja."

You know, the more of this series I watch the more I come to see that it's not so much that ninjas are everywhere, it's that the concepts of good stealth, infiltration and assassination are damn near universal. Yes the Shinobi made it look good. They made it look really, really good. But a lot of what they do are taking advantage of universal quirks of human psychology and just smart techniques. That's why we're seeing more of it, even if a person knows all of nothing about Ninjutsu a LOT of it is just good stealth sense. A person is looking for a human, don't look like a human. They identify based off your face, so don't show it. They don't always look up, so stay up. You need to climb, get a tool for it. Even the towel makes a huge amount of practical sense in that it can be thrown down from a high place and landed on to muffle the sound of your drop and that's besides using it to further blur your outline or just to carry things as an impromptu bag.

Ninjas often worked as SPYES and assasins. It's not surprising that a professional spy actually uses techniques that other professional spyes use.

I love how often you have Warframe on your list. Ash is very ninja-esque but plays much more like ninja in later eras, where they were employed more as assassins. Loki and Ivara however are very much like traditional ninja. I'll leave that debate to you though. I love your work. Also I saw Matpat's video about your buddy/video editor, my condolences and best wishes to you all.

A ninja is a spy. Their main mission is espionage and the fighting is secondary. It's not much of a stretch to think of the Spy as a ninja. Granted we don't see him doing much actual spying in game, but that would be rather hard to do that in a multi player FPS. That said there was that one short animation...

Hey Gaijin, I’m a huge theatre nerd and I think that the Phantom from phantom of the opera uses lots of methods that remind me of ninjutsu, like using fire to evade enemies, and constantly wearing a mask, and literally telling no one his real name. Do you think you could take a more in depth look at this?
