All of the "no one cares" ... "it's not a big deal" ... "such a drama queen" comments have a real "but officer, what do you mean speeding isn't allowed in a school zone? I didn't hit anyone... Don't the kids know how to get out of the way?" vibe to them. Just becuase a disaster didn't happen, doesn't justify irresponsible and dangerous behavior (talking about the follow up, not just forgetting the video to begin with...). Not to mention the safety video is exponentially more important on flights to/from/within developing countries since a larger proportion of passangers will be new fliers. Anyway, carry on. Don't want to get in the way of some good ol' trolling on a Friday morning.

As a former cabin crew, when the safety video doesnt play, crew are supposed to do a manual demonstration. There are manual demo kits onboard for this purpose and it’s part of our annual safety refresher. We are also supposed to check and ensure that all screens are working when the safety video is playing. In the event that its only 1 screen that isnt working, in economy class we direct the passenger to look at the screen beside. In business/first where there r individual seats, we do a guided demo at the seat using the safety card and manual kit. Every passenger needs to be briefed on the safety procedures, it’s a non-compromise.

Was recently on a JL flight and the monitor on the bulkhead suddenly stopped working as the safety video began. A member of crew noticed it within seconds- a few seconds after that she had a manual demo kit in her hands and performed the briefing just for my neighbor and me. It’s attentiveness like I had on that flight and like you describe that keeps planes safe!

Ten years ago, I took a transatlantic flight from ORD to LHR on British Airways. A passenger had a medical emergency during taxi while the safety video was playing, so we returned to the gate. The passenger and three family members were taken off the aircraft. Then, they boarded a single standby passenger into the vacant seats. Once we pushed back, they announced that they would replay the safety video from the beginning so the newly-boarded passenger could be brought up to speed.

I used to be a Lufthansa purser, and I can assure that Lufthansa always emphasized safety. We had regular trainings, and we had to pass tests. The Lufthansa pilots are chosen very carefully and so are the crew members. Pilots have to pass so many really difficult tests before they can start their training as a pilot. Safety is considered extremely important by Lufthansa and by all employees. I can hardly believe what you experienced. That is really not Lufthansa policy. All Lufthansa employees also feel that safety is the most important thing and part of their job. I really don't know what to say. However airline crews also learn that accidents or problems always happen because their is a chain of mistakes. If one looks at any airline accident or crash, most of the time there was a number of small mistakes made, or unattentiveness. I can also say from my own experience as a purser that on short distant flights there are so many frequent travellers, and most of them are so bored with safety demonstrations which was done by crew members themselves. They continue talking and reading during the demonstration and don't even look. So we did get the feeling, that our demonstration is not considered important. This does not mean that we didn't do it with dedication. Kevin, I love watching your videos, and you are really sweet in your love for details. You see everything, you notice everything, and you always remain polite in everything you say, but still you do say what needs to be said. Thank you for all your work. I think that your video will have consequences in the sense of emphasizing the importance of the safety video on flights.

@@tfft Just to add my two cents: I was a flight attendant for LH for 6.5 years, and can only confirm what the ex-purser has said. Kevin, you are 100% right in your points, and an incident like this, if reported to the captain, usually leads to a de-briefung for the entire crew. There are systems to back up the systems, and somehow, none of them worked, or worse, were intentionally disregarded,

WOW, where to start. I'm a retired US airline pilot. I cannot believe how poor of a reaction and action Lufthansa crew gave. I have flown with them many times. In fact in March I flew from FRA to Denver in Biz class on a 340. While an old product, the crew were great. I too am very distressed that they didn't show the video, but worse, they didn't seem to care or notice. Then they don't seem to understand that bad things can happen in the middle of the flight?! Is that a lack of training, or they don't give a damn?! I am shocked by this crews inactions. I'm so glad you shared it. It'll be intersting to see if and when LH responds to you officially more than that form email. I have subscribed to your channel as a result. This popped into my suggested videos on YT. Safe travels

The main takeaway for me from this “incident” is that an entire 747 crew had not at some point brought this to the attention of someone or each other , shows a total disregard for the importance of safety . Take off and landing are indeed the most important part of a flight but so is an explosive or gradual decompression inflight. I hope the civil aviation authority does indeed see this as I’m sure the crew didn’t self report .Disappointing ….. and that aircraft needed a deep clean as it was just plain dirty !!! Good review/public service announcement. 'Nothing could happen.' Like a window blowing-out - or a door? Shocking. Anyways, some time ago, my aircraft from Nice had to do a go-around at Heathrow - engage after-burners, gear up, reach for the skies, spill the champagne in Club Europe kinda stuff. Why? Because the cabin-crew hadn't finished clearing the cabin for landing. The captain, the 'pilot-monitoring', 'fessed-up, saying that he hadn't warned the cabin-crew in time and his incomplete-checklist meant 'go around'. Credit to British Airways for doing something that this crew probably wouldn't have. I liked the look of that food. P.S. How I detest that Condor boiled-sweets-inspired livery.

I'm sure some people would be offended by this, but after the response I got to this video (i.e. mixed), it has me wondering if it's just a developed world thing. As in, many travelers from the developed world cannot fathom how or why this would be a big problem. Where as those who are from/lived in/or traveled through extensively the developed world see day in and out exactly why it's critical to be shown- there are brand new fliers on every flight I'm on. Just food for thought.

Hi Kevin am from the airlines industry and still active in aviation. We have been trained to uphold “the safety above all” You did what you have to do honestly and honorably. The issue here for me isn’t that they forgot to show it. The issue is there is no checklist in place to mark that task completed. Flying safely is in the main all about following process and procedures to reduce human error. The captain is told just prior to take off the cabin is secure, which includes the safety video presented to passengers. I personally always watch the demonstration if not just to see where the exits are located if the aircraft ends up in darkness or inverted. I hope airlines watch this as a sign to change process and ensure less failures in general

Good video. I'm a little leery of KZbinrs who constantly go down the OMG its a crisis...this is horrible for clicks route(Non Stop Dan?) You did a great job of communicating a legitimate concern and you are absolutely right. The biggest issue I have with this is that it shows a culture of either A) complacency or B) fear of intimidation of questioning your superiors. Both are equally bad. No you don't wont a longtime employee to loose there job over something like this but it should be a wake up call. You would think everyone in the aviation industry would be walking on eggshells about safety and thoroughness with the current (very justified) scrutiny Boeing is going through. I totally accept your complaint / legitimate concern about the safety video and I won’t comment on that further. My comment is to address the dirty / filthy aircraft. I flew my first flight on Thai business class on a 777 to Delhi from Bangkok. The aircraft was not at an airbridge. We were stuffed into buses and driven seemingly many kilometres to what appeared to be a graveyard of aircraft with some missing engines etc. But there was our 777 was waiting. It was filthy. The seats were in terrible condition. I was absolutely astounded. My next flight was Thai 777 Katmandu to Bangkok some weeks later. Dreading it, to my surprise it was immaculate and superb. I have since flown on Thai countless times and never experienced anything like the flight to New Delhi. My conclusion - flights to India don’t get much priority in the cleanliness or other departments.

As a quite frequent traveller, I thank you immensely for the amount of time and effort you took in raising this, both onboard and afterwards with this extremely well considered and well presented video. It is an extremely serious matter, and you seem to have conducted yourself both politely but seriously at all points. The eventual (I think 3rd?) cabin crew interaction was encouraging, but the initial lapse incomprehensible and the first TWO follow-ups highly inadequate. I’m not sure what the tone of voice was in the more eventual and “taking it seriously” interaction, but I would like to imagine that the “informing the Captain” mention was that he needed to be made aware of the incident (he/she is of course responsible for everything on the aircraft in the end) as opposed to anything directly related to you. Perhaps even that the Captain would be needing to file an incident report about the safety briefing not being shown when it should have been, and how the crew became aware of it (e.g. 81A noted to crew that safety video was not presented, and we then presented it). The email reply later is pathetic. More along the lines of what l’d expect if the two First Class passengers wrote in to say they had been looking forward to a delightful private space with an individual red rose, Caviar and LPGS Champagne and ended up in a dirty old 747-400 with a downgrade. I hope they were at least aware that under EU regulations they were entitled to a 75% refund of their entire fare paid (not just some fare difference), which lessens the sting of the last minute downgrade (but has nothing to do with the unsafe handling by crew of what is really a major safety lapse). Sorry for the long winded comment, but just to say again that I’m immensely impressed both with how you managed this onboard, how you managed your video about, and I’m thankful for people like you who travel and pay attention to such things. I myself struggle to figure out how to deal with much smaller issues I encounter in the travel industry, and find a demeanor like yours DOES make a difference. I commend you on not scoring the flight, but I score your handling of it both during and after as a 21/20

I took a flight on Iberia last October from MAD-JFK. The flight was about 30 mins their so I guess everyone was trying to get the flight out as quickly as possible. The last customers were coming on board when I heard the boarding complete announcement. Passengers were still making their way to their seat from the front of the aircraft to the back. Overhead bins were still opened, and I was in the process of swapping seats when i noticed the aircraft was pushing back. Literally, about 2 min after we were pushed back from the gate, announcement was made for the flight attendants to take their seat for take off. They were using the runway very close to the terminal. The flight attendants barely had time to get to their jumpseat since they were securing the cabin. The safety video was shown well after 10,000 feet.

Check lists are very standard in the aviation industry and I would be surprised if they didn't have one. Some accountability might be with the captain as it's their responsibility overall. I flew business class with this kind of plane last July 2023 from Singapore to Frankfurt. My personal opinion is ''I am not a fan'' because of the lack of privacy and lack of storage for my stuff, even Premium Economy in SQ is better than this business class. My point is if I have to spend a lot of money to sit in business class, I want privacy, space and comfort.❤🙏

I wouldn't call the crew incompetent, but you are 100% correct. Had something similar happen on an Aswan to Cairo flight, except they actually tried to show the video, the system crapped out, and they were forced to do a manual presentation, but by the time they got around to it we were taking off...literally taking off. They did get the travel prayer done though. But when I was flying as a pilot, to tell you how serious this is, we had a way shorter than normal taxi and we were late because a passenger had to be kicked off the flight or escorted off, I forget the reason, but our taxi, instead of being 10 minutes was 2. We were about to take off when the flight attendants called up and yelled at us not to take off because they forgot to do the briefing. Fortunately, we had the runway to ourselves for a while, and they were able to do the whole briefing without us leaving the runway and getting into the back of the line. My guess is, that these FA's do this so many times that when things are forgotten, it turns into a "someone else will say something" sort of thing if they even notice at all. They were probably either reserve crew or had come in from another base so were fatigued and stressed. But they are very lucky. That happened in the US, and an FAA inspector was on board, they would have allowed them to get up to cruise and then could have had them return back to the airport and had them all taken off of the plane...if they wanted to, especially with the way they fought you.

There definitely are checklists at Lufthansa, these mostly just concern pre-boarding checks though. As for the safety video not being shown in the first place, I understand that mistakes happen. I cannot believe that not one member of the cabin crew noticed, so I rather suggest that most noticed but chose not to bring it up with the head purser. Perhaps they didn’t want to cause trouble or risk repercussions by pointing out the oversight. This points to a really dangerous safety culture where people are afraid to speak up to their superiors. There have been many aviation accidents where a significant contributing factor is a “power imbalance” where for example a junior first officer is not comfortable to question the actions of a senior captain, or if they do, they are flippantly dismissed. The response you got for rightfully raising your concerns was disgraceful, and makes me wonder if there is a lack of Human Factors training at the root of the problem here. Well done on a very thoughtfully and carefully put together video!

Great video. Talking about aircraft safety I would welcome some feedback on what I witnessed on an Emirates flight some years ago in business class, that appears to be standard practice (at least at the time). Cannot recall the aircraft type, but that is irrelevant. In preparing to serve breakfast a few hours before landing, the crew assembled several fold out trolleys in the forward galley that were jammed up against both the forward doors (and of course emergency exits). From memory it was two trolleys on both the port and starboard sides. These were then stacked with pre-prepared meals for distribution during breakfast. It did occur to me at the time that should there be a mid-flight emergency that these exits would be rendered inaccessible. Interesting considering how pedantic most airlines are (and quite rightly so) on keeping emergency exits clear at all times. Is this practice still the case? Interested to know if anyone else has witnessed this or similar.

In my experience I've generally seen the carts lined up perpendicular to the doors- looking back now, perhaps to keep free access to the doors. I think they either forgot or didn't do it before we left. This was on an MD-80. I vaguely remember someone was taken off the flight and we have to swap plans or there way a gate / plane swap when we left DFW. All of that might have contributed to them forgetting the demo.

Yeah, if they forgot but then caught the mistake (or at least didn’t make ignorant excuses after I brought it up) and showed the video straight away, it would have still been a safety violation, but from my perspective would have been a non issue.

Any chance the safety video may have been played on the lower deck while it didn't play on the upper deck and the flight attendants on the upper deck kept waiting and waiting for the instruction to do the manual demo which never came?

Nope. The purser specifically said they forgot entirely and when speaking about why it was a ‘better idea’ to show it now as I mentioned, they referenced how all of the pax in economy would benefit from still being awake.

You’re right to be concerned. Either showing a safety briefing (or doing it manually) is important or it isn’t. An airline can’t have it both ways. From LH, an airline I’d always associated with adherence to safety procedure and technical quality, it’s shocking.

I don’t find your tone to be “gotcha.” It is mind-boggling that among the whole crew no one found it unacceptable that the safety video wasn’t shown! And it is unacceptable that the purser made you feel that you were the one who broke a rule (“must report to the captain”). Thank you for this video!

As a german I have to say, that the texture of the "potatoes" is really ok. That are german "Klöse" - they are like this. But there are differences all over germany how exactly those Klöse have to be made.

I have flown a bazillion times in my life but I have only flown on the 747 one time. If I were in an emergency from the upper deck of the 747, the safety video would be critical to my survival because it's one thing to know how to evacuate a one-level aircraft. If you're on an A380 or a 747, You have to consider two levels. Maybe that doesn't sound like a big deal, but if it's somebody's first time in that situation or that type of aircraft and something occurs that can make the difference between not just their life or death, but the life or death of the others around them. The safety videos and the safety demonstrations matter.

Perfectly valid point. Frankly, I can see how in some cases, people who don't know any better may not "believe" that you are supposed to jump from the upper deck. These demos are critical.
