They're impressive. I was a pole vaulter in high school, and we once had a meet during a light rain. Coming down the runway, I wiped out--the crossbar was heavy metal--not feather-light fiberglass like this one. it whacked me on the head. I stood next to the pits to clear my head as the next vaulter made his attempt. He crashed and burned, too, knocking down the standard which then cracked me in the head. I don't think I cleared any heights that day!

He says, of Chloe Henry, an international, highly trained and experienced athlete, that she is: " ..... a very athletic lady - you can tell, I mean look at those arms and those abs......." What else would one expect? I imagine that many commentators are the same, having never run anywhere, except from their desk to the donut cart and back.

+Ruple Thaker: Yeah, it looks like she is trying to give herself inspiration or something. Sometimes NBA players do the same thing before they take foul shots. Karl Malone of the Utah Jazz used to murmur something to himself every time he was going to take a foul shot.

You make a fall here on this narrow ramp at speed and you are breaking a leg or ankle. Dark background helps with depth perception just holding that pole on line is a strength test in itself. Rain slick path will slow the approach down which is not good for the plant and lift. Gymnastic sprinter background helps. Few athletes pick this event up from the get go. You definitely dont want to fall into the metal box you'll break your neck. If your plant is off line and has to slide into the crease you will go sideways . Try running at top speed with your eyes narrowed into a 1 foot target . Hand eye coordination is critical. A late plant and the pole wont bend and you will have to abort takeoff and run through the end zone. You have to remember the era before fiber glass or its inflexible early days with bamboo . Poles broke shattered low trust took a lot of courage.

@@tavspop not with those sticks bamboo in my backyard.. you ever hear a pole snap when you're trying to land on some dead mattresses.. 1964 olympics inspired but a concrete wall behind the mattresses and tomato garden stopped my elevation . The two meter mark was not reached at 10 years of age due to the knot I got in the back of my head .LOL . Live at the improvisation of trying to imitate the wheaties box with fishing poles . Later I did coach track and studied some people not as great as Richards or Seagren
