@@Bruehoyt I'm just now seeing this, that's awesome my friend, I've also owned several Ghia's, one of them I really regret selling, because it was a 62 very, but I was going through a divorce at the time and I was strapped for cash, I had a 74 super that was a blast to drive, never owned a bus though. However my pride and joy is my 59 beetle that my grandpa bought brand new in February of 1959. Even though it's slow and has no modern creature comforts like ac and power locks and windows, I drive every chance I get, when the weather is nice., and your right most old VW collectors will turn their nose up at the supers. I've talked to a lot of them that say they Don't want anything 68 and up. That's a shame to me because they are all extremely special to me.

Loved my “71 Super. Got her in 76. Drove that car everywhere, put tens of thousands miles on that baby. Enough room to pack up for week long camping / fishing / skiing trips in the Sierras, trips to L.A., Mexico, Reno. Hundreds and hundreds of times to Punk Rock shows in San Francisco, Berkeley, Santa Clara and everyday S.F Bay Area daily / work driving. Did everything myself to keep her humming. My life changed in the late eighties and sold her when I got into 4X4s. We got ourselves a 68 five years ago and loving the bug life again.

My first new car was a 71 Super Beetle. At the time, they still made the regular Beetle but I bought mine in September of 71. Congress had just repealed the Federal Exiise Tax on cars and there was a temporary price freeze so I knew I wouldn't be able to ever get one any cheaper. I still have th bill of sale. I looked it up for someone recently and with distination charges to the midwest and an AM radio, the cost was $2196. A few weeks later, i received a check for the refunded exise tax. If memory serves an old man properly, that was about $100. For $100 in 1971, a 22 year old could party like a rock star fora whole weekend.

Classic VW fan and enthusiast from Tacloban City, Leyte Island, Philippines here. My main interest are the super beetle models: 1302s and 1303s. My first car when I was a newly licensed physician was a 1974 VW 1303s. I drove it daily until Nov 7 2013. The following day super typhoon Haiyan submerged the whole city in a 16 feet storm surge. It destroyed my beetle. Year 2015 I drove a newly restored 1971 VW 1302s super beetle which I drive daily until now. Year 2015 I bought an brand new 2015 VW tiguan TDI. Later I sold the tiguan to my sister. As for my beetle I will drive it daily as long as it lasts. For me the super beetle is a bettter car compared to the standard beetle. It's bigger, handles better and has a more powerful engine. You just have to be very careful on the road because there many aggresive drivers on SUVs. Just sharing my experience. 🙂

I learned to drive on a 1972 Super Beetle. I drove that car hard. I remember going to an out of town basketball game. I live in Montana. An out of town basketball was 342.6 (thank you Google) miles. This was the State Champion High School game. I remember a teacher asking me if I was the driver of a little red VW Beetle that passed her on the freeway. I remember that trip. On the freeway, that Super Beetle was traveling balls put with the speedometer needle straight down. It was pointing at the turn signal. Past the readings on the dial that stopped at 90 mph. This car, being a VW, handled the "use" like a champ.

those busses are a solid investment, at least in Germany. Own a 1990 T3 Westfalia Atlantic version, high roof, which I bought in 2006. With those one should be able to make most of it oneself. Many times I've thought of selling it but the T3 was the last build with the motor at the back which makes it superior as far as space is concerned to all later models. My first car was a '72b Super Beetle. I loved that car. It wasn't safe, and was luck that I wasn't killed in it. The gas tank sat behind the dash board. If you played the gears right, then you could keep up with traffic. You have to remember most of the cars on the road were rear wheel drive. They were fast, but not off the line. The Super Beetle could pull out quickly. I live in Pittsburgh. Where there are very few roads that are straight, unless you are on a highway or Parkway. Pittsburgh is very hilly with a lot of curves in the roads, which is great for a Super Beetle. I learned how to tune a car on my Super Beetle, but I never did brake work.

Three generations of my family learnt to drive in our Beetle. Every one of us who owned and drove her, loved her. I can honestly say, without hesitation or reservation, that the modern version of the Beetle ranks last or second last in the eyes of every classic Volkswagen owner and driver I know.

The speedo needle was all the way upto the oil light, but i slowed down to 160km/h until i take a photo of it lol. I now have a 1302s that had been converted to a 1300 single port, but i am getting it rebuilt to be a 1600 dual port again. Neither my old beetle and the current one has the death wobble, if your tires are well balanced and your front end bushings and tie rod ends and steering damper aren't bad, there isnt even a slight vibration on the steering wheel. My old 1303s also used to have the shimmy, but after getting the frond end fixed it is completely gone. Can't wait to drive my 1302s once again, it was a very fun car to drive until a wall on my buildings parking lot collapesd onto it, luckily the buildings insurance covered it up, and after a few months of wait it will be on the road soon once again. I have a friend who has a 1967 1300, it is a way nicer car but it does'nt corner nearly as well as my old 1303s or current 1302s. The Super Beetle used to be dreaded because for many years, replacement front struts were not easily and affordable to obtain. Now that has changed so there isn’t any reason to hate them anymore; especially the convertibles!

Super Beetle added fuel injection to the flat 4. It did give a marginal improvement in both fuel consumption and driveability. I knew someone who had a couple of Supers after years of regular models.

Not sure they were hated. I had a 1971 VW1302S (1600cc) with bulbous front and a flat screen prior to the curved windscreen VW1303S and loved it. Easy to spot as the front curves under. The nose was wider and longer. It handled well because of the McPherson strut set up.

These cant be built into off road buggies like the originals because the suspension taking so much punishment would damage the frame. The original cars suspension is divorced from the body entirely so it can take a beating without damaging anything other than the struts themselves.
@jackandblaze5956
@jackandblaze5956 14 күн бұрын
The front suspension is not nearly as tough as the original suspension, but the ride was smoother. The super also weighed almost 300 lbs more than the original and in a car with only 50 hp, that extra weight makes a difference. The old AC compressors used about 8 HP, so a fully loaded super beetle with AC would deliver about 42 HP with the AC on. Fortunately, it has wing vents, so driving without the AC on is not too bad. The super beetle was also not good for off road use because of the front suspension. Those are most of the reasons that VW type-1 purists would rather have an regular beetle.

Had 2 71 Super beetles. One blue had the AC unit and one Orange. They were my favorite of all 12 of the Beetle’s we owned. 1971 was also the last year of the flat windscreen. Had a vintage feel over the curved windscreen and dash board in the post 71s. Our 73 super beetle had the curved windscreen. I never drove that one I was to young.

I never owned a Beetle. To be honest, never liked them. But - back in the day - a close friend owned one after another. So I sometimes got to drive them when he needed a favour. Still didn't like them, but I did learn to respect that low-rev everlasting engine..At the time I wouldn't have bought a Beetle, but if I'd had the means I'd definitely have bought the van. We once spent a month converting a retired Beetle into a kit car. Great times.

I have a friend who bought one of these Super Beatles with A/C and automatic transmission. He said the A/C put such a load on the engine that it was terribly sluggish which doesn't surprise me. Also having automatic transmission probably made his car even more sluggish. I don't know why VW would even sell a bug with these two features.

I owned four beetles altogether representing most of the variations from 1958 to this "super beetle" variant. The super beetle was the best of them and I'd have driven it longest of all the cars I ever owned (15 in all) if it hadn't been totalled in an accident. This landed me in hospital for 2 weeks, mostly because the old VW beetles don't offer you the safety and protection features of modern cars. My advice: by all means buy a beetle if you want one, but always remember that these cars are not as safe as modern cars.

I passed on Super Beetles way back unless they were rusty and owners needed them gone. More parts for my herd! A Super doesn't handle the same. Yes similar but, when all those bushings were tight in the front end and coupled with the IRS rear, It handled much much better.
