( www.TFLcar.com ) The Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 is the most iconic high performance mustang. The new one, with a 5.2L supercharged V8 will do zero to sixty in 3.3 seconds and the quarter mile in the 10 second range. In this episode we compare it to a 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang in a good old school drag race comparison!

They should race that new mustang against a kid in a 5000 dollar Civic EG hatch with an Ebay turbo. Those early big block GT's were bricks. Ford could never run with Chrysler and Chevy on the street.

I just bought a 2020 Mustang GT and it takes a little practice to master the linelock. The most important step: Turn off traction control! That step is never mentioned in the prompts. When you fail, the prompt says refer to manual. And there's absolutely nothing mentioned about it in the manual.

Divine Wrath One is subjective as many people find new cars like the Ferrari and Aston models to look better than anything else made in the last 30 years. The second is something that tends to appeal to those who want to be seen rather than enjoy a great drive. I will take better performance over sound any day. A mid range Honda is faster than a muscle car from the 1960s with all its sound and looks. My 911S has a great sound and super car performance by the standards of a decade ago. It’s safer and more comfortable than old muscle cars not to mention being a great everyday car that you can track. Only an insane person would drive an old muscle car in the winter. It’s why that generation dove these only on sunny summer days.

true. the driver pretty much admits he doesn't especially know what he's doing, and the guy instructing him basically says " just keep the gas pedal firmly to the floor and release the brake at the light". So basically your grandmother could get a good launch, as all of the skills required for drag racing are pretty much taken out of the equation.

Yep, I had one as well in early 70's. Raced it with my 67 coupe (289) mustang and beat the Shelby so bad, the kid traded me for the 67 coupe, after I offered him $200 in cash as an incentive:-) I figured it worked to about $1100 cash and trade in 1973 with 40K original miles. After some work on the clutch, shifter and carbs, we raced again against my 67 coupe (which ran the 1/4 in 12.9 at Orange County Racetrack) and he only beat me by one car length, and that was all due to traction. My 67 coupe was like a cat, would literally jump off the line, the Shelby was tricky due to all that torque and not big enough or good enough tires. That 67 Shelby to this day was one of my favorite cars, loved working on those dual carbs and that massive motor. Plus the roll bar, aluminum dash and Shelby trimmings were pretty cool.

The burnout can be done by anyone who knows how to do it, just disable traction control with the press of a button. The launch control is a track app that helps drivers that dont know anything about racing launch the car correctly. Any driver with experience wouldn't need to use the feature. Theres a lot of technology stuffed into these cars and it really is a lot of fun to play with, especially the active exhaust 👌 loud when you want it loud and fairly quiet when you want it quiet and all of these apps and features are available on the regular mustang GT since 2019.

A buddy would drive one and I'd drive the other and park them side-by-side. No one even looked at the Corvette. But they'd gravitate around the GT500 like bugs to a light. I bought the car in Wisconsin and drove it 1100 miles home. It was easily the most fun on-the-road drive I've ever experienced. I can attest to how difficult it was to change the plugs too. I had a buddy that had small arms and hands and I'd occasionally call him and say "hey, can you do me a favor?". Before I could even ask what it was, he'd say "anything as long as it's not changing your effing Shelby's plugs!".

@Pete shea Its EASY to make a car go fast when you have the benefit of 100 years past technology. Guys in the 50s and 60s figured out that disc brakes were better than drum brakes. Radical cams. Aluminum heads. These are the things that make a car go fast. Not just putting them all in one car and claiming to know anything about cars. But if today's car makers are so great WHY do there cars SUCK? I would rather have a 1925 Ford Model T then that dammed "launch control" Mustang! Its just pathetic that these Clowns CAN'T build a car that I Would rather have than a car built in 1967...pathetic. But I guess DORKS don't make for good car builders? The VW you mentioned SUCKS! I'd rather have a '67 bug!

@Pete shea I never mentioned making more power you did...READ CAREFULLY, LISTEN and try to LEARN. Disc brakes don't make a car go faster either. Those are just innovations related to speed. You SLIMILLY applied a literal context to them to make a phony argument. The ONLY thing good about these Mustangs is that retro body style! Everyone wants the SHELBY ( the REAL Shelby) not the launch control. CAN YOU READ? DARE to change that retro body style and Mustang sales will go away. And FORD dammed well knows it. Example look at that last Pontiac GTO no retro body style. NO ONE wanted it. If it had a '65 GTO retro look it would be as popular as the Mustang. Being a Motorcyclist all my life we understand the sensation of speed. Simply it dissipates over time until no matter how fast you go it gets boring. This is why guys love OLD motorcycles. Each time you ride it is a different experience. And you're not going 200 mph. If you were intelligent my words would be like the gospel. BUT to a fool....NAHi

Wow... there are a LOT of clueless people out here (and I'm not just talking about the Ford hating soi bois). The '67 Shelby was capable of performing far better than this one did, but... who is going to take a highly valued (and priced!) classic car and really drive it like they stole it? No one. It's as simple as that. That being said, the '13 Shelby is going to beat it every time.

The old one tested in the video was less than 2/3s the cost of the new one, even after adjusting for inflation. $5043.60 (Manufacturer's suggested retail price, plus Federal excise tax, dealer preparation and delivery charges; does not include state and local taxes, Iicense or freight charges) That's under $39,000 including all hidden fees

The greatest thing about those old cars, you could literally watch the gas gauge needle move down. I owned a 68 Caddy, with a 472. It went real good, but if you floored you could waste 5 gallons in 20 miles. I'm sure if you got 5-6 mpg with the Mustang you were pretty happy.

david duncan this is true, the '67 GT500 could have been alot more prepared for that drag race, but then again, that 2020 GT500 didnt even have the track package, which gives it carbon fibre wheels for immense weight reduction, along with deleting the rear seats which saves even more weight. That's the reason he wasn't running 10's in the 2020 GT500. Both could have been faster but of course the 2020 GT500 will still always win.
