Same, and now own a 515WHP SN95 Cobra. People tease the looks of this generation all the time…almost like its the thing to say to make it seem like you’re cool to the other bros at cars & coffee. At the time, these were some of the best looking sports cars on the market. And they sold an a## load of them too. When the 99 restyle came out, I distinctly remember people hating on that too. SMH.

No a convertible is not the performance version. In order to not overstress the unibody and fatigue the steel, a softer suspension is required. Because you want a hard core mustang, don't judge a car from a 20 + year old car by your criteria. This version of the mustang WAY outsold the Camaro proving it was the right car for it's time....not necessarily yours. Oh, and it is called a toneau cover. It was common in those days. You can see the workings of the top in the current mustang convertible when it is open as well.

My first mustang was given to me from my mom, yep the ugly 1978 mustang II, but i loved that because i was happy to have a car. After that hand me down, I got a 1985 GT my senior year of high school. I got so many tickets, i was called an habitual violator of the law. The judge said if i get one more ticket my license would be suspended. I didn't get anymore tickets after that. Then came the 1994 GT, and i was hooked and i love my car, i did let my teenage son drive it a few times while he was a senior in high school. But that didn't last long, when he came home one night and said i barely hit the curb. 800 dollars later, tie rod, lower control arm and new tire installed, it was his last time driving my mustang. I should have known, lol.

The SN95/New Edge are the last relatively light Mustang. It’s essentially a Fox body with a more rigid structure. Still has pronounced front end brake dive geometry and bushing bind rear end, but it has a wider track, better brakes and more predictable handling. Excellent car to modify for either drag racing or road course. It will also fit any Ford engine you can imagine short of a Powerstroke. GTs weighed right around 3250. Coyote swap and have a blast.

After driving a 1993 Fox body 5.0L/5 speed, the fox body was faster because it was lighter, but the ride, seats, brakes, squeaks and rattles are so much better on the SN95 that it wasn’t even a comparison. The new edge Mustangs are kinda ugly but the early SN-95s look great! I bought a 1995 GT convertible new and drove it for 19 years and 275,000 miles. Best, most reliable car I ever owned. Also the cheapest to own, as few things ever broke except the plastic odometer gears, the power seat gears, and the stator. Otherwise, I only replaced wear items - tires, batteries, brakes, shocks and such. Every other part on the car was original except for as mentioned, and the convertible top. By far the cheapest (amortized over 19 years) and most reliable car I ever owned. It still ran well when I sold it. I had to run the seat in the most rearward position to be comfortable. The gears in the power seat platform finally broke, so I ditched the power apparatus for the simplicity of manual controls from a 6-cylinder Mustang. This is an easy job. Just unbolt the seats, flip, unplug, unbolt the electric platform, bolt on the manual rails with spring, and reinstall the seats. Easy, easy. I later bought a 1997 GT convertible but gave it to my daughter, whose boyfriend got rear-ended while driving to military duty, and it was totaled. I still thought it was a better car than a new edge Mustang. The 94-98 Mustangs were great, but the new edge ones sucked. I have owned both. And the 94-98 are better looking, too. The floating pony in the grille looks great!

By contrast, I later bought a 2003 “new edge” GT convertible and hated it. It seemed so much more cheaply built. And ughh... 4 lug wheels. had an 88 GT new. heater core, and burned a quart of oil every week since it was new. Ford said it was normal. A few years after i sold it, got a 90 LX 5.0 for 4500 bucks. Did a motor swap (Ford racing GT40 shortblock and gt40 intake) and 2 heater cores on that one. Or was it 3? And a clutch cuz the Kevlar clutch i put in it vaporized trying to go up a hill in snow. dont put a kevlar clutch in em. they chattered and were noisy af and slipped like a mf-er. stick with the stock setup if you're gonna drive it. And a transmission. And 3 alternators. The drivers seat track busted and the floor rotted through and the rear hatch would open if i hit a big pothole. Bought the second one, so that shows how much fun they were. But still fugly. Oh, and be very very careful messing with those heater core hoses, dont twist em around too much. if ya gotta take em off, just cut em and get new ones. and LEAVE that flow restrictor in there. trust me on that one

Had a 96 GT with the stock rear gearing and it was anaemic with 2.73 gearing and only 215hp. It was fairly heavy for its power but still super fun being manual, rwd, and having an LSD. 1st was the only gear you could have fun in and you could nearly reach the top speed of 143mph in 3rd and cruise at around 3,500rpm in 5th at top speed before you lost momentum.

That $28K sticker is nuts. I bet they paid $5K less w/ all the incentives from back then. I bought my '98 Laser Red/Saddle Cobra conv in late '98 just as '99 New Edge were showing up and I paid $26K+tax on a $30,230 MSRP. Car negotiations could take an entire day back then, I remember well. Talking about the interior, again you are showing your young ignorance. Prior to this generation of cars, the interior vinyl dried out and cracked easily. So while not, luxurious, the plastic they used was to combat the complaints of cracking plastic in previous generations. So to those of us in those days, this was an advance, not a negative. Is it as luxurious? No, but as you said it is holding up well.....and it is a convertible. obviously the person who bought this was not looking for a hard core sports car, hence the fake wood. Again, stop judging the past by today's standards. Your generation seems to love to do that without knowing the backstory.

One thing to touch on also is this is the Mustang that kept the Mustang RWD V8. Ford was committed to turning the Mustang into a FWD 4cyl Mazda based coupe until the people rose up and petitioned against it. What it resulted in is one of the most modified platforms in the world with parts availability for days. You can truly turn these cars into any kind of build you want. The fastest stick 1/4 mile car is a modified SN95 called "Minion TT." Hate on the stock car for their lack luster power and bubbly looks all you want, but a tastefully modified car looks great, and can be made into any kind of build. Also, the comment about fake vents and all that is inaccurate, 94-95 cars have 0 fake vents, the side scoops do vent into the rear wheel wells, and the hood nostrils are functional heat extractors, only the new edge cars have fake hoods and sides, and the 96-98 cars blocked off the side scoops.

Definitely get a hardtop. I prefer 94-95 and put the 96-98 tail lights on it. The 5.0L has way more aftermarket. If you do get a 96-98 do yourself a favor and get the PI heads and intake from the 99-04 GT and add 3.73 gears, headers, and a nice exhaust. Really wakes the car up and makes it 100x more fun to drive.

The 5.0 had more aftermarket in the 90s. 25+ years later that is not the case. There is tons of aftermarket for the mod motors too. That is an old outdated way of thinking. The 2v is just as capable as the old 5 liter both stock and modified and it does it with less cubes. People hate on the mod motors too much.

Yes 96-98 gt with ported pi heads and intake and aftermarket cams will go over 300 rwhp all day long. That is stout power from a 281 cubic inch 2v from the 90s. The npi shortblock with pi top end gives about a 1 point compression bump it should be like 10.5:1 or something.

I like the fact you did a stand alone video of this car, apart from the cheap convertible video series with the other TFL crew. You guys pretty much summed up this car perfectly. It is absolutely period correct for its era, but because they have been less desired than other models, you can find them at decent prices. As you mentioned, you can do high performance brakes and suspension to them, and there is a huge aftermarket for the 3V engines (including things that make it stronger and more reliable). There's at least 1 or 2 of these cars not far from me that have been turned into sleeper track monsters/corner carvers with over 400hp, but look almost entirely stock with the only giveaways that they aren't, include things like Mustang Bullitt wheels, drilled and slotted big brakes, and a lowered stance. The car is absolutely a car for smooth, reliable grand touring, but can be hooned around too, without fear of braking it. Keep giving us more content like this, I think lots of newer generation drivers can be enlightened as to what's available out there...

The first car I bought with my own money was a 2001 Mustang GT vert. I LOVED that car, but it also felt from an earlier era, even in 2001. You could see the body flex going over big bumps. The clutch weighed like 50lbs and my left leg would literally start shaking in traffic due to the workout (I was also a gym rat at the time). It wasn’t exactly comfortable. I’m also convinced it made itself feel faster than it actually was because of the noise and whole it flying apart around you feeling. That said, it’s one of the few cars I look back on and miss.

So, I am very "old school." My first car was a '65 Mustang GT (I graduated high school in 1974) which I paid $500 for. I'm retired now, and my current Mustang is a '73 Mach 1, which I craved for when I was 16. Anyway, my wife decided she wanted a new Mustang back in 1996, and we bought her a Rio Red GT. Car was fun to drive, actually got good fuel mileage, and was peppy. Sounded good with stock exhaust. I drove the car, and I'm 6'6" (knees were in the dash.) we kept it until 2001, when our son out grew the back seat. The only disappointment was the lack of horsepower. This car would not even come close to running with a Z28, and desperately needed at least 250-275 horsepower. 315 would have been nice. But overall we did enjoy the car very much.

My 1994 mustang has functional side scoops. I’m not sure what year they stopped, maybe 96, but they vent air directly onto the tire, so I am not sure how well that affects the cooling of the brakes. And that fake wood was a very common mod in the early 2000s. They sold kits like that for all makes and models. Definitely not a dealer add on. I also don’t know what year they stopped this, but most of those pieces with the decals were coated in that infamous rubberized coating, which was very cool when new, but easily scrapped off or got sticky over time. Some owners would paint theirs, others, I suppose, went with decals.

With the fox mainly the 86 and up you could set it up to run 11s at the track or probably quicker, drive it to the track and back home then to work the next day. I had an 88 LX 5.0 5 speed with 2 stage flows headers and 3.55 rear. Was a fun car that sounds great. As far as at the track the 87 to 93 was the car you didn't see coming and when people went up against it they'd get pissed. At one point I believe in the late 80s you could get the battery in the trunk from the factory as well as air-conditioning and radio delete.
