( www.TFLtruck.com ) You may recognize the Toyota Tacoma if you live in the U.S., but that's not the truck the rest of the world would recognize. Instead, everyone else gets the Toyota Hilux. It's still a pickup, but how exactly is the global Hilux different from the Tacoma we can buy here? Fortunately, we have a viewer from Malaysia who explains how the Hilux is different.

Thank you for this great look at the Toyota Hi-Lux, which is probably not known in the USA. When we lived overseas, I had two Toyota Hi-Aces, a 12 Seater with a 1.6 L petrol engine and a 15 seater with a Diesel. Both were great and super reliable which was necessary in the long trips to the villages on the dirt roads. I knew several guys who drove the Hi-Luxes in the Highlands loaded with the locals squeezed in the beds. I drove a Landcruiser with an inline 6 cylinder 3L Diesel. It took me through some of the most harrowing adventures in the mountains and through rivers that were so flooded they submerged the bonnet/hood. Those Toyotas were tough and trustworthy cars!

I LOVE the Hilux - I had two of them in my previous life in South Africa. I had a 2.7 gas and also the 4.0v6 gas which is the same engine we get here in the Forerunner. In my opinion the Hilux is a lot better than the Tacoma for working. It has higher payload and towing numbers than the Taco - almost comparable with the Tundra in that regard - especially payload. For the really hard jobs you need the Land Cruiser pickup of course.
@jasonw8124
@jasonw8124 4 жыл бұрын
The higher towing and payloads are only because other countries use different definitions, it's not that the truck in SA was more durable or sturdier. You can see common passenger cars in Europe towing RVs and boats, but their USDM siblings are either rated very low, say 1500 pounds or not at all.
@BPJac

@@jasonw8124 That may be true, but trust me, both my trucks had over 150K miles when I bought them, and they were sturdy as the day they rolled off the factory floor. @@RecBuddha - I saw a few folks that appeared to think it was not possible to get a Toyota Diesel in the U.S. and only wanted to share that it is. I currently own a 2001 Toyota 4-Runner that is a conversion with a similar drivetrain, 1KD-FTV engine with the 6-speed, and it has been spectacular (dieseltoys.com/gallery-2/2001-4runner-d4d). Mine is legally registered in Fulton County Georgia which is basically downtown Atlanta. You are correct that there is not a price equivalency with a factory vehicle, but the quality of my installation is so good that Toyota mechanics can't believe it did not come from the factory. I would say though, beyond the price difference, the lack of a factory warranty is the other big pill to swallow which goes to your point- it is not equivalent with a factory vehicle. Mine is an older conversion and thus more appealing as the warranty had already expired.

@@dochollywood1921 I hear Toyota has emissions durability issues in Australia. Not sure they did a good job with thier systems. Regulations don't keep diesel Tacomas from existing. Cheap gas negates the need where in other markets, gas is much more expensive. If there were significant amounts of customers lining up to buy a diesel Tacoma and willing to pay the premium pricing, we would have a diesel Tacoma. We don't like paying extra for diesel cars and trucks so the market shrunk. Chevy will be dropping the diesel Colorado because the take rate is too small. Before we had tight diesel emissions restrictions, you could buy diesel Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, and VWs. The take rate was small then too. We had the Chevy Cruze diesel. Again, not enough buyers jumping in. Let's not create a narrative that can quickly be mowed down with evidence. Americans don't have diesels because they don't demand them and they won't buy them. I wish it was otherwise and I actually own a diesel so I put my money where my mouth is.

And one other thing is this pickups are pron to accidents although they are stable at high speeds I wouldn't recommend doing a sudden turn, you will loose control very quickly, it's good that simon added spacers in his wheels to lower the center of gravity and give it more stability... But all in all they are amazing beautiful looking trucks with excellent mpg's , good reliability with a quiet and smooth cabin...

Among the 3 major makers offering their 4WDs here in Malaysia, the Hilux has the stiffest back suspension set up. Had a 2015 3.0 DID 4x4 with 45,000km and at 100,000km the engine started to loose compression, injectors a power loss until at 125,000km was forced to invest a bunch of money to try to restore the lost performance and get rid of the tail pile black smoke.

Just bought a 2020 hilux, great truck BUT...... a damn silly DPF on it, WTF???? Also revs up to 2700 revs before it goes to 6th gear at 70 mph??? Apart from some other minor complaints it’s a great truck but look at the spec on some of the Dodge Rams... wow! I had to buy the damper for mine and it is the highest spec model

They are pretty much identical, the only reason we dont get the Hilux in the states is thanks to the Chicken Tax a 25% tariff on imported trucks and vans. The Hilux is made in Japan so it is subject to that 25% tax so to get around it Toyota makes the Tacoma with NAFTA labor.

I think the Tacoma has a better approach angle but I like the Hilux way more. I'd love to see the Hilux name available in the US even if it was just a trim level of the Tacoma. Of course I'd also like to get the diesel engine in the US market.

I hope so too!! I like the looks on the Taco better but I miss the purring sound of Hilux Diesel engine(grew up in Nicaragua)!! I guess is too expensive to import them from the main assembly factory in Argentina to the US (bc of chicken tax) and of course the diesel regulations we have in the US also.

In Mexico we get the Hilux, Tacoma and Tundra but just some versions; Hilux the work truck, from chasis cab, single cab to doble cab in gas versions all manuals, and double cab diesel one manual and one auto and pre facelift versions still, I didn't know there was a Hilux versión so equipped like the video one. Tacoma the fun truck, just double cab auto gas V6 versions (SR5 and TRD Sport), no TRD Pro, Limited & TRD off Road versions and I think they will sell well here. Tundra just V8 double cab luxury versions (Limited and 1794 ed)

You will probably get old until your truck die. As a matter of fact your probably die first than your truck. Toyota just don't die. Should look for this video called how to kill a Toyota, from top gear show in the UK, they tried to kill an old very rusted Toyota pick up they bought from a farmer, and they tried to destroy it without using explosives and they couldn't..

Zach Chan - the overseas (not available in US) Ranger Raptor has the new 2.0L 2TD-I4. The only US app so far for the engine is the '20 refaced Transit Van, in which replaced the TD-3.2L I5 used in overseas Ranger levels, like the Wildtrak. Recent US-spec Rangers have never been spec'd with a TD, just a gas / petrol turbo.
