Imagine if vehicle manufacturers didn't have to worry about vehicle exhaust emissions so much, to have only the regulations from 1996 but now have this amazing fuel saving technology, we seriously could get 40+mpg from diesel engines in half ton trucks.

I would love to see a 3/4 ton diesel vs 1/2 ton diesel on the same conditions, comparing max load on the 1/2 on each truck. Might help some of us who are on the line for typical towing applications, but could be swayed up to the bigger truck and a bigger trailer in the future
@dchawk81
@dchawk81 4 жыл бұрын
As someone who went from half ton to 1 ton, just get the bigger truck straight off if you can afford it. Fuel economy, power, etc aside you'll appreciate and even love the extra stability when trailering...even if you only ever planned on towing 8-10k that the half tons can do. Especially if any of your trailers is a box. Having said that, if all i ever planned to pull was my open deck car trailer (9990GVWR) the half ton would be fine because of airflow. But as soon as I got the 1 ton I was able to pull the open like it was nothing. And the 24' enclosed that my half ton technically could do but white knuckled, the 1 ton just doesn't care is back there. It feels the weight getting going and you see the fuel usage, but one handed cruising at 70mph is nothing. The half ton scared the bejeesus out of me at 60 with trucks passing and crosswinds, etc. I'm the one passing in the 1 ton. Construction zones aren't scary anymore, straight as an arrow, narrow lanes no big deal. It's glorious.

@dchawk81
@dchawk81 4 жыл бұрын
@@meals24u For the record, I don't think I'd get a diesel for a 3k boat. I doubt the fuel savings would offset the premium paid for the drivetrain. A good V8 like the Ford Coyote I had would be fine, IMHO. It was fine even pulling a Lincoln Navigator on the open trailer and didn't use enough gas to warrant a diesel upgrade. A boat would be nothing. All vehicles suck more fuel when towing so there's no way around that. The Nissan is probably just exceptionally thirsty by today's standards, but if it's paid off and still reliable, that's another thing to consider. You can burn a lot of fuel for a car payment.

@@scott6074 I know what you were calling cap on, I’m saying I don’t find it hard to believe as I’ve owned a variety of these engines now and they’ve all been very impressive with fuel economy, my grand Cherokee alone has DPF delete, EGR delete, straight pipe exhaust & a tune, I’m pushing closer to 300 HP and about 510 FT/LB torque but I did the 3 cord pull stock, since the upgrade I’ve towed heavier loads and gotten better fuel mileage then before the delete. If his is modded in a similar way ( which he never commented on so I’m speculating here ) but I 100% can vouch that those numbers arnt unbelievable at all. Also very nice, what year raptor and would you recommend them for a farm / occasional tow rig? I’ve been heavily debating getting a raptor for the past few months here since the new farm we moved too is super bumpy but dunno much about their towing abilities, just know they have some of the best suspensions and can take bumps/jumps better then a Cherokee.

It is 24 valve but has common rail injection and doesn't have the notorious killer dowel pin of the 1st gen and no #53 block bad castings and no VP44 injection pump issues of the 2nd gens. They got it right in the 3rd gen and, unlike the 1st & 2nd gens, can get a real crew cab.

And if I drove the Cummins like I had a raw egg under my foot I could get 20, towing was worse economy than the other trucks in my experience. I like this vid. I have to admit that I am a would-be Chevy/GMC person if I were to be partial to one make over the others. But it seems to me that the Ram, many times, has been a no-brainer with these modern trucks at things like this. And the Silverado is the ultimate underdog that I am so glad to see make a come-back at something. And if I'm correct, the 3.0L diesel Silverado still has under 300ft/lbs torque while the Ram is up to 480 but has been out for a while and been re-designed.

I gotta admit I love my '14 ecodiesel grand cherokee with the gde tune, but I've never ever ever been a fan of v6 engines. To me they feel like they have the torque of a 4cyl down low with the fuel efficiency of a much larger engine. Basically, I just don't enjoy the way they deliver their power. I've always loved a straight 6 configuration. To me they've always delivered nearly instant torque down low and given fantastic fuel economy compared to v8 counterparts. That's why I've always preferred Toyota supra's to corvettes and i6 jeeps compared to v8 off road monsters. I've never owned an i6 Cummins, but it's definitely on my "must own" list. I purchased my ecodiesel jeep instead of a Cummins 2.5 years ago because I'm averaging 30k+ miles per year. I tow between 1200lbs to 6800lbs every other weekend, but a little ecodiesel was more economical for my purposes driving 600mi/week unloaded. Of the 30k+ miles per year that I drive, at most I'm only towing 3k-5k miles of that, and like I said, the trailers are only 1200lbs to 6800lbs depending on the project that week. I'm extremely interested in the chevy 3.0l diesel simply because it's an i6, so the torque down low compared to the v6 ecodiesel should be immense. I don't really give a rats ass about peak torque, I mean sure it's great having a lot of torque, but really what matters is area under the curve. I want to know how these two deliver their power on a dyno, on the same day, same conditions, same time. The numbers that matter are how much torque each engine puts down off idle up to around 3.5k-4.5k rpm. The area under the curve matters so much more than peak, it really irritates me when people just "parrot" the claimed peak power number. Imo that i6 3.0l diesel could be something truly special. Let's get all 3 3.0l diesels and have a dyno day and overlay all 3 dyno graphs to compare the numbers at various points of the rpm range where the engines are usually being run day-to-day. Please TFL make it happen! ♥

WRT to the Chevy...Based on the gas vs diesel prices in my neighborhood of $1.97 for regular unleaded and $2.45 for diesel...Even at the rated 33 mpg highway you are only saving $2940 in fuel costs over the 5.3 over 150,000 miles at it's rated 21 mpg highway. I bet the mileage delta between the diesel and the gas V8 is less in city driving as well. Then there is the DEF fluid costs. The cost differential on the build and price tool for the 2020 truck on the LT trim is $5310 for extra for the 3.0 over the 5.3 and $6705 more versus the 2.7 I4 turbo gas engine. You have to really want a diesel to get this, because for the average suburban commuter you're not going to save any money on fuel unless you drive it 270,091 miles or more.

I’m looking forward to seeing how the Tahoe\Suburban compares on this test to the Chevrolet/GMC truck when the Duramax becomes available in that GM sport Ute platform. I’m also interested in how the GM/Dodge 4X4 trucks compare on this test. Most people in snowy states\Provinces prefer the 4X4’s. Andre I appreciate your calibration of the vehicle Speedo’s to a true GPS speed, I have always found GM to be dead nuts accurate (Which has was confirmed by your cross check) to the gps speed but don’t have any experience with Dodge any comments? Everything you're about to read is from the perspective of a ford guy. I like the Chevrolet over the ram and I'd buy the chevy over the ford diesel offering. Towing is more confidence inspiring than with the ram with the movement of the 5 link coil setup although both ride well mty. The chevy is faster with no noticeable turbo lag and is quieter for those trips to the drive thru you know are going to eventually be made. I fit in the back seat of the chevy with the front seat all the way back and I can't say that about the ram. Ram wins the beauty contest but when it comes to a truck, I shop for function over beauty. And you can see my reflection in the back window of the chevy right at the last fill up so oops!

I did notice that when you topped off the Chevy after towing you held the fuel handle halfway instead of fully open as with the dodge. This puts more fuel in the chevy and makes the mpg slightly lower.

What they don’t talk about and people for get is why I got a 3/4 ton truck and trading in my 1500 Ram Hemi. I got the Ram 2500 long bed with 6.4 Hemi I have 3000 payload - 14000 towing - larger frame - way more ground clearance - larger axels solid axles - bigger gas engine. - larger brakes. Now when i tow my 7000 pound camper I am at 50% of my towing. I put my 1000 pound ATV in the back close the tail gate because of the 8 foot bed connect the camper and configure it any way it want and don’t even know it towing it with the new 8 speed transmission. My 1500 was seriously stressed out with this towing and payload. Oh and I don’t buy Diesel engine because of all the EPA emissions on them and it will freeze up on my driveway in Montana. Oh and the 2500 4 link and coil springs on the rear rides like butter............ my Laramie Ram 2500 listed for $61K and I got it for $54K at this price I feel it will run circles around any half ton. That include a fully loaded truck with sun roof - leather - H/K 750 watt stereo - power everything - power pedals - power seats in front - heated seats front and rear - towing mirrors - memory seats thing is loaded loader.

I don’t like the fueling process. Top off the tanks with a portable tank. Measure out an equal amount of fuel into another portable tank and use that to refill after the test. Measure out the remaining fuel in the portable tank after the test and then do the math. Eliminate any inconsistencies between pump refills. Other than that, it’s nice to see some real world unbiased tests being done.

I just tried it in my 2014 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2 l engine and I had a 3-in leveling lift kit and 33 big off-road tires on it and I was getting 18 miles per gallon on the highway very disappointed with my 2021 ram rebel that it's only giving me 14.2 miles per gallon on the highway at 80 mph

I think the Silverado has a gas tank restriction.. after the first 30 sec, should go very slow to get it all the way. I had a ford minivan with a slow feed gas tank.. have to go ultra slow near the top to get a consistent full level. your mileage may vary.

You may disagree but I believe your test may be prone to error. Here is why I say that. With my 2013 Ram when I pull heavy I believe that the DPF gets far cleaner then when the truck runs solo and ever more so than when the truck runs solo and does a regen. In my experience after pulling heavy after words I see 4 - 5 better MPG for about the first 300 miles. What does TFL do so that the trucks are in a fair comparison?

Let me offer some comments. The length of the trip is too short to be meaningful when compared to the likely errors in how identical the fills are. One 8 oz cup of fuel makes the difference and I doubt the fills can be that consistent. Particularly when the second portion of the fill is done manually rather than setting the nozzle on the lowest lock so that at least that is consistent between each trucks. How about taking one truck and do the trip 10 times and fill it up each time you do the trip and calculate the mileage for each trip as well as the overall mileage based upon the total of all the fills. See what variation you get on each trip. Also reset the onboard mileage calculator each time and record what it says. One cup of fuel in a 26 or 33 gallon tank amounts to a very small fraction of an inch of tank level. Just for talking purposes if the tank is 3 ft long by 1.5 ft wide 8 oz of fuel is about 3/16" of height in the tank. Given the accuracy of the fuel injection system of all these trucks it seems to me the electronic system has the potential to be 100% accurate. With your contacts with the factory engineers how asking them how their systems calculate the mileage and what accuracy it has. It should be virtually 100% accurate unless they purposely cook the books. All the best guys,

I think it was Mr Truck who said that this amazing mpg is due to 8 to 10 speeds and 3.21and 3.23 rear axle ratios, Ram and Chevy, respectively, but my very light 4,190 pound, regular cab F150 has a gas engine that displaces only 2.7 liters with V6 architecture. It has 3.31 rear axle ratio. It does have only 6 forward gears but since model year 2018, the newer version with an updated engine has a ten speed, but roughly the same mpg estimate as my 2015 model truck. I can make that same mpg loop and would expect no better than 26.5 real world in the near lightest and smallest half ton available in the segment and is powered by the most economical gas engine in any truck and high gearing to boot. Even so, the best of the best gas pickups for fuel economy is beat by these new diesels by at least 6 mpg. No! It is not gearing and transmissions with many forward gears or even aerodynamics that propel these new trucks to new heights. What makes them go way beyond 30 mpg and higher than my compact wagon Kia Soul with only 118 ft-lb torque is amazing diesel efficiency. Plain and simple. Diesels have jumped way out in front of gassers once again.
@Bacnow
@Bacnow 4 жыл бұрын
Gregory Faulkner - keep in mind that Ford plans to introduce a hybrid F150 next year! So, gas engines will close that gap and might be a better option for most people who aren’t hauling or towing on a daily basis. If it does well then i think the new diesel era may be over before it starts. Especially, when you consider the fact that this new generation of diesel engines were designed for fuel economy only with no regard for durability!

Love your channel... I have a word of caution though. Those radios look suspiciously like Baofengs. If so, using them without an amateur radio license is a federal offense. If your using them on commercial frequencies and have a commercial license, it’s still illegal because they are not FCC approved for use in the U.S. Amateur radio operators can use them because they are licensed to modify them to ensure they meet frequency standards. The plain fact is the quality control at the Chinese factories is very poor and they cause very bad interference on many harmonic frequencies... including those reserved for police/fire/ambulance and other critical communications. Again, I love your channel and you put out great information. I just want to make sure you know if those are Baofengs or one of the other Chinese clone radios that they are not good to use in the U.S. (Even if Amazon or other online stores sell them)

Are there any indications from this test regarding durability long-term? does the fact that the RAM transmission takes more load going downhill (fewer brake applications) indicate anything in terms of longevity as compared to the GM truck? Mr. Truck ripped GM for having an exhaust brake that "didn't work", but I'm wondering if perhaps it just takes some of the load off the transmission which would in term result in the GM transmission lasting longer?
