I have been enamored by The Great Books for over 40 years. Back then I had read that a reading and mastery of The Great Books would give you an education equal to a PhD. However, I ended up in Law School where both the study of law and the practice of law left me with "reading burnout". I have been retired several years now. So, here at age 72 I might go ahead snd make that 10 year investment in The Great Books. I have been reading the Bible thru, cover-to-cover every year for 40 years. This should be a similar commitment. I will give this strong consideration. Having a "set" of books with the daily readings already marked off in daily "reading chunks" would make things much easier for me. Thanks for your insight! Steve in Mississippi

A gateway consideration: I sought an easy entry into the great conversation after enjoying these books for several years. The Gateway to the Great Books is now my favored point of embarcation because they also provide a comprehensive syntopical guide which allows me to enjoy all the benefits of reading The Great Books of the Western World by way of wonderfully interesting stories, essays and relatively shorter works. Thank you for what you’re doing.

The problem is this, the reader of these books need to know how to apply this knowledge and make it practical.

Perhaps you have the answer you sought. By way of explanation, the first three books of the first edition of Great Books of the Western World are: The Great Conversation, Syntopicon volume 1 and Syntopicon volume 2. The first two books of the second edition set are Syntopicon volume 1 and Syntopicon volume 2.

Well the Iliad is a chore. It’s a bunch of names whose armor rattles heavily to the ground…. Just trying to grind thru it and I’m hopeful the odyssey is more interesting.

The Iliad is amazing, not a chore at all. Try the Fagles translation.

@@folksurvival I’m glad you enjoyed it. I have no desire to read it again. I got half way thru the odyssey and put it down to read a Brandon Sanderson book. I thought ‘I’ll read something fun in between the great works’ and I haven’t read a great work since. 😭

The Iliad is an epic poem. That said, what is implied is that it must be heard to be appreciated. There are now commonly available recordings and videos attempting to faithfully recreate the rhapsodies. Embrace and enjoy them until you are comfortable with the idea that to know Homer’s story you will live with the Trojan War epic.
