Hi I have another machine that is probably the same but manufactured for the UK, mine is slightly different in that the machine can plane on the top also so it is a planer / thicknesser.
@DavidStanton6 жыл бұрын
Is it a benchtop model like this or stands on the floor?
@johnfithian-franks82766 жыл бұрын
Hi David, it is a bench top model and I had not noticed but the cutter is at the top and the thicknesser table moves up and down with the cutter head staying still.

The Cutech 40200H-CT 13" Spiral Cutterhead Planer is $630 dollars in the U.S. The cutters are HSS. I have the DeWalt Lunchbox with carbide cutters though they are 3 straight blades. I paid almost as much for the blades as the planer. It cuts good but did a not so good job with the stock HSS cutters. Does Carbateh/Cutech offer the cutters in carbide?

Yes Ron. Here is a link. You would need 3 packs. www.carbatec.com.au/replacement-tungsten-spiral-blades-suits-10pk-th-bx330p-ct-330x Remember it is $AU which is 72 cents US

None to mention but I spend a little time adjusting the outfeed table to apply a little pressure to resist snipe.

Hello David: I am a big fan of your videos because of your presentation style - no BS! About the Carbatec THBX330P thicknesser: it is not a true helical cutter, so how do you rate it compared to say a Shelix spiral cutter? Regards David Moore
@DavidStanton2 жыл бұрын
Hi David Moore! It is a segmented head, all 26 blades are cutting, not shearing. A true helical head (angled) will deliiver a better result with cranky timber but not with consistant grain.

Nice review Dave- I have had one of these machines for a couple of years now. After planing a lot of Jarrah for an outdoor corner seat the feed rollers aren't too keen on always feeding without a push from me despite installing new carbide cutter inserts. Is there any way of adjusting the feed rollers?
@DavidStanton6 жыл бұрын
Hi Bill. To answer your question I would say that I do not know. You can adjust the bigger machines but bench top units not sure. I would be looking at the condition of the rollers to see if they are damaged or worn in any way. Possibly try to clean any sap or resin buildup that may have occurred with a detergent and warm water. There are many other things that come to mind including how the machine has been used. Very hard to tell without looking at it myself. I have had situations where I will test a machine and of course it performs well for me but when the owner gets it home they have problems. Again, different user, different result.
@billmancer81426 жыл бұрын
I've just cleaned the rollers but they looked brand new any way although they were a bit dusty which may have caused some slipping. I'll wax the table as well and see how we go...

Hi Dave I am looking at getting the Thicknesser that you have just reviewed, I had a GMC unit that has just broken, the adjusting height cast bracket broke, didn't use it much and GMC gave it to me to replace a Vac I sent back many years ago. I am thinking of making some boxes up and have a lot of off cuts of Jarah and Ash HW flooring, so I thought of glueing them together To get a wider board to make a box 350 x 250 x 200 high Box to hold service medals from my father and his brothers as well as Grandfather's and my Vietnam Medals. I am just doing a quick 45 degree joints etc to see how it goes and if this works okay I will start using dovetails and box Joints. My Question is even when I try to keep the flooring flat when glueing I will end up getting a small amount of bow plus the fact that flooring has variations in thickness. Will this unit be able to get the glued boards flat and get rid of any minor bows that have occurred?? Or do I need to get one surface flat 1st before I start milling it to the right thickness. I know the rollers in the thicknesser roll it through but would they end up pushing down on the timber and getting rid of the bow while cutting and then spring back once it comes out the other end. I don't want to have to also get the Carbatec 200mm bench planner as that will blow my budget but also if the thicknesser won't work it would not be viable to get it?? What are your thoughts. Regards Kim By the way your Videos are great to watch and very informative.
@DavidStanton3 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim Dalzell! You can make a sled for the pieces to be fixed to, to pass under the thickness planer. Support the bow or twist with some small packers to stop your wood from being forced down. Use a hot glue gun to hold things in place and take very shallow passes. When flat you can turnb the board over and complete the job.

As I am not in that area it isn't really easy for me to respond. I purchase timber from Matthews timbers in St. Marys, NSW.

Dear David, I am looking for a small planer / thicknesser and without a doubt, the Carbatec looks the best thicknesser in its class on the market. I’ve just finished watching another presenter who worked up a Dewalt versus an older model and Matthias Wandell spent a lot of time talking about snipe. I couldn’t see but it looked like there was little or no snipe on the three bits that you cut. Is that true? As for planing: I understood that a planer has blades below and the piece moves across the top. How can you call this unit anything but a thicknesser? Cheers.
@DavidStanton5 жыл бұрын
which will keep the cutterhead behaving itself and any snipe will occur on the scrap piece. Of all the thicknessers in this class I have found this one to have the least snipe. It is still there but hardly noticable. Note, the deeper the cut in a pass, the more visible the snipe will be. I hope this helps you.

Looks like you got ripped off on two edges of those blades. Most Helical cutters that use blades like that have all four sides sharpened. I have to wonder if they did this as a way to sell more blades. That being said, this doesn't really look like it's a helical blade, but just multiple blades set in s straight row. How many rows of blades does this have? I made the mistake of buying the cheaper Dewalt Thickness Planer before I found out that the more expensive one can have the cutters changed out with a helical setup. I really wish I had bought the more expensive one now, because the Dewalt blades are very soft and pick up a lot of dings.
@DavidStanton6 жыл бұрын
Hi Maga man. Thanks for watching and making a comment. One point about your comment, I don't think I ever called it a helical head, in fact I stated a few times the machine's blades are of the segmented blade type and facing directly forward. I also mentioned why the blades have 2 sharp sides, the other sides designed to rest against a section in the head to reinforce their position. In answer to your question there are 26 individual blades on six faces of the head, each row of blades has either 4 or 5 blades and they have a minute overlap.
