The Environment Secretary was questioned at the DEFRA Committee on Tuesday, where she insisted that the reason the UK wasn't well prepared to mitigate the havoc wreaked on thousands of British homes by Storm Babet was because the rain came from the east.

⁠I do t really get why this statement is being made fun of so much (I am in no way a Tory btw), but I can imagine that weather even if it’s just rain falling can be quite complicated to predict accurately. If you then have an anomaly, like a weather coming in from a different direction, I understand why it might be more difficult to accurately predict where and how much rain will fall and therefore have difficulties to take the correct measures. I I,agile if this would have been said by an expert and would have been put in some more fancy words this would not be seen as an issue at all.

In any case the Met Office and other forecasters predicted the path of the storm correctly. The forecasters are not responsible for cutting funds for flood prevention and the rescues services, nor for allowing houses to be built on floodplains - that's down to maladministration by the Coalition and the May, Johnson, Truss, and Sunak governments.

Rain this heavy that crosses the pennines has a different effect to rain that come from the east off the north sea. Water in the midlands and yorkshire flows west to east. That means the hydrology of heavy rain is different when the rain moves in the same direction as water flow instead of against it. The storm saturates the ground as the flows from rivers upstream increase. Not my area of expertise but this sounds like an expert briefing poorly explained rather than pure incompetence.

Boscastle floods caused by ineffective/none maintenance of the surrounding area whereby not removing fallen trees and foliage caused a back up until it broke through. I was also in Somerset when the levels overflooded due to non maintenance of drains and ineffective dredging. Just in case you don't know, 200 mm is 8 inches, which is a phenomenal amount of rain. Even a minimum 90mm throughout the North is a massive amount of rain 3" for any rivers to deal with. Why redistribute pumps from western regions towards eastern regions. Is it not the case therefore that fundamentally you don't have enough. I would suggest that apart from a few super pumps that as I recall were hired in from the Dutch when the Somerset levels flooded a few years back. Most of these pumps that the government are suggesting could be redistributed would most likely be pumping out flooded basements etc. Not preventing catastrophic flooding over large areas. Rather closing the door after the horse has bolted. A lot of waffle from this lady if you ask me.

Good job she is not an Irish politician. She would br eaten without salt as we say in Ireland. The government started keeping met weather stats over 150 years ago at least 150 years ago. There were leafs on the line, It was the wrong type of snow. All pathetic excuses by the Tory government.

That's funny, because I live right in the heart of the area in NE Scotland where the storm hit. First the rain and wind just weren't as bad as other recent storms and secondly the F***g rain fell in the same F****g way it always does.

"Spring tides" have nothing to do with the seasons. They occur twice a month during evey full or new moon. I guess she'll be wondering why neap tides don't just occur in Scotland and don't only occur during the potato harvest.
