Today, let's take a look at a large part of Thai culture, Thai Buddhist Amulets, as we take a wander through Bangkok's oldest amulet market, Tha Prachan. Located opposite Thammasat University and the Tha Maharaj Mall, let's take a look at Bangkok's rich tapestry of life. What is a Thai buddhist amulet? What is it for? Are they valuable? Do they have magical powers? Should a foreigner ever wear one? Mine were all given to me by my Father-in-Law, RIP, who was a monk for a long time before he got married.

I have just been given a Thai amulet as a gift from a Thai guy that I have got to know the past couple of years here in the UK. His main job is making Amulets and going through a whole process of hurdles via meetings with monks, paperwork etc to have his amulet’s validated as the real thing. He tells me never to sell it and to pass it down to my family. He spoke about my amulet being good for business. There was never mention of the amulet being only for Thai people, in fact he told me that when I visit Thailand next I will have a lot of interest from the type of amulet I have and especially once viewed through a magnified glass.

No, it's not just for Thai people mate; you're right. Haha yeah, there are many Thai men who carry a magnifying glass exactly for this purpose. You see them gathered around tables or stalls examining various amulets - it's a big market here. I agree with you though about "given" amulets, regardless of whether or not from a monk. I was given quite a few by my late Father-in-law. I will never sell them, but I may 'gift' one or two on at appropriate moments. 🙏

Sort of akin to old paintings. I wanna wear amulets for fun.

You can wear them for fun but I'd recommend you get one blessed by a monk first. 🙏

Yeah, I wouldn't worry about a few hecklers. I wear Thai amulets myself but get mine from a trusted source. I am not Asian, actually Mexican-German ancestry, but I so love Thailand and Thai culture since my first visit back in the 80s. Thai amulets, according to my understanding, fall into 2 broad categories, Buddhist amulets and those based on magick that predates Buddhism. Love your videos for sure.

Go to a to a temple is probably best as they pretty much all have amulets for sale. I am not sure of the best source if you want to buy online. BTW, thanks for watching Rowel!

U probably bought all fakes, not joking. Been selling these for long time. U must find a reliable friend.

@@chaipod I wouldn't dream of buying from this market in a million years. My collection came from my late father-in-law (RIP), a Thai national and expert on amulets. I do not buy them as I don't know enough to not buy fakes.
