So the guy on the cover, Jaromir Jagr (pronounced yar-oh-mere yah-grr), is the second leading scorer in NHL history, so you think he would be a slam dunk for the hockey hall of fame, right? Just have to say: if you enjoy basketball (as I do), you will probably enjoy hockey. They have run similar plays as they have almost an identical amount of people on the court at the same time: 5v5 players moving the puck i.e. ball around in rotating triangles, the only difference in player number is the goalie but they don't really leave the circle, so it is still essentially a 5v5 in terms of movements they make to score. 5v5 half court *just like basketball,* OR, if it's a transition, a full court fast break *JUST LIKE BASKETBALL* where they may have a 2v1 trying to assist back and fourth to get a shot on the goalie. It is SHOCKINGLY SIMILAR in terms of movement on the ice compared to basketball. Pick and rolls? Huge Screens? Huge. Rotating triangles? Huge. I never played hockey, but I watched a bit at university as the team there was top in the USA. I played lacrosse, and lacrosse is also similar in that it's a 6v6 half field with rotating triangles, picks, screens, etc. Plus, not that this is some sort of "huge evidence," but they even use the same area for TONS of hockey/basketball teams, because it's a nearly identical size...they have ice underneath the basketball floor at a LOT of games, and slide the flooring off to expose the ice for hockey). Hockey is like basketball mixed with a bit of lacrosse and thrown on ice with people flying at insane speeds. It is THE BEST SPECTATOR SPORT IMO TO WATCH IN PERSON, as, even far back in the stands, the energy is insanely palpable. Watching a guy throw an insane check some guys way into the plexiglass? It's just awesome to watch. Also, hockey is THE BEST SPECTATOR SPORT OUT OF THE 4 MAJOR LEAGUES (MLB, NFL, NBA, NHL). There is NOTHING LIKE BEING NEAR THE ICE AS YOU WATCH ENORMOUS GLADIATORS FLY AROUND ON SHARPENED KNIVES AND PLOW INTO EACH OTHER AT INSANE SPEEDS, all while making nearly identical movements to a basketball offense. Defense is similar in that it's almost always also man to man or zone, but a bit different in the fact that the puck is flying around and people can check you, whereas in basketball the ball is always in someone's hands and you cannot plow into them at 40mph. Plus you have weird rules like icing penalties and such to make it slightly different, but the offenses are INCREDIBLY SIMILAR to a shocking degree. Again: I don't follow hockey anymore, I only really watched it at uni. But even since then I have gone to 1 or 2 games for the sole reason that hockey games truly are the most fun sports to watch in person. I love basketball, that's what I usually go see if anything (despite playing lax and not basketball growing up), but hockey is a close second. I don't follow the NFL or the MLB at all. Only league I follow is the NBA, but I do enjoy watching hockey IN PERSON from time to time.
