I don't think he was practicing, looked to be sick. Great sense of humor. All the students respected him very much. He had gained some weight. But did not loose his smile. R.I.P.

I have trained in several styles, one of which was Sanuces Ryu Jujitsu and on several occasions with Professor Powell. This art is absolutely useful, some of the things I've learned from that art have saved my bacon more than I can recall. For those of you who have ever been given instruction from Professor Powell know that it is a rewarding, scary and painful experience; especially if he likes you. For those who have referred to this style as a "waste of time;" maybe you had a bad teacher or maybe you didn't train long enough to do the movie stuff. But if you trained in it, you would know better.

Realistically, after the attacker throws a punch, he’s not just going to stand there, like a statue, and wait for you to do your move. That’s the problem with TMAs. TMAs lack sparring.
@chriso8193Ай бұрын
@@nicklubrino2606 Sparring is not a fight. I know you may be slow, but this is not a fight. Get it? It's not a fight. Look at the disclaimer at the beginning, sit and learn. if you have nothing to offer, then you're weak and we don't need you. Go to a page that's more your speed. The issue is that you don't pay attention and this ain't a Bruce Lee movie. It's a demo. People like you think the world is a fucking cartoon, but these Black Men are doing positive things and doing what Malcolm X said, keep yourself ready. Only thing Bruce Lee did was make money off Black folks. Either let us know what system YOU study and your rank, or just be a man and learn.
@nicklubrino2606Ай бұрын
So, you think Bruce Lee made money off Blacks? How did you come up with that? Didn’t Moses Powell learn his self defense techniques from an Asian guy? So, it’s Moses Powell who made made money off Asians. If a martial arts style doesn’t have sparring, it’s garbage. Bruce Lee: “Learning to fight without sparring is like learning to swim without going in the water.” Sparring is the closest to a fight without injuring your training partner. When the early UFCs came on, I was expecting to see spinning back kicks like we see in the movies. It didn’t happen. I realized that Karate only works in movies. The early UFCs(were you born yet?) exposed Traditional Martial Arts such as Karate, Kenpo and Kung Fu. Do you know why TMAs don’t work? They lack sparring or resistance training. Their training consists of executing self-defense techniques on a non-resisting training partner who stands there like a statue. That’s how they train. Don’t give me that this will only work in the streets. This type of training will only lead to a false sense of security. Do you know why Brazilian Juijitsu is effective? BJJ guys roll(spar) every day against a resisting training partner. They could pull off a choke or an arm bar, in real time, because his opponent is also trying to do the same. Boxing is effective too because they have full-contact sparring.

Why would you respond like that? I didn't comment to be disrespectful, but to offer an observation. For the record, way back when, we were taught in Sanuces, to do just that, in case something goes amiss; it's better to have the side of your face hit the ground, than the front, which includes the teeth and nose. Not to mention, the forehead. Still, don't get the point of your hostility. But, to address your point, simply turn your next to either side, when hitting the floor. In fact, this is an automatic response for me.

I can debunk this whole art as nothing more than a cult. I trained this art for a short period of time under an instructor who claimed to train under Moses Powell. Until I realized it was a waste of time. The proof is right at 19:10-19:20 where he is suppose to be pinning a man down with his first applied to the mans back, and he quotes "the man is immobilized until help comes." I encourage any to try this maneuver, let yourself be the victim on the ground, and see just how easy it is to stand up from that scenario. A simple wrestling technique taught to a wrestler on their first day will get you out of that situation. Simply build a base, its that simple. This is the problem with martial arts today, everyone gets lost in the magic of it.

Then the no rules fighting came to America in the 90s and all the went the shit .. we saw what works and what doesn't... My problem with this , is simple without free sparring there's no way to know how the opponent"s body is gonna react ... Not everyone reacts the same way when hit, and if you do free sparring quickly you will understand that it's not easy to do all that on a resistent opponent, also no one standstill and let you do that ... Only by sparring one can evaluate his technics as effective or being efficient only by fighting you can know that... I know it's training ok but if it's only this kind of trading then it's bullshit. "No Rules Fighting" has ALWAYS existed. If you're talking about cage fighting/MMA, there are tons of rules. If you have a problem with the art, fine, but let's not pretend MMA matches aren't stopped for things that would just be something you had to deal with in a real fight.
