Thailand heads to the polls on May 14th, 2023, amidst plenty of drama. An incumbent switching parties. The resurgence of the Shinawatra clan in politics. A crackdown on civil rights. And a new monarch on the throne.
The engineer of the 2014 coup, incumbent Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, hopes to cling to the reins of power. But a surging Pheu Thai party, now led by Paetongtarn Shinawatra, the daughter of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, is mounting a formidable challenge.
Against this backdrop is a flagging economy, rising inflation and concerns about the country's civil liberties. What is at stake in the upcoming contest, and can the next government turn Thailand's fortunes around?

There is no prosperity problem in Thailand. There is a prosperity distribution problem. 70 years ago the economies of Singapore and Thailand were nearly identical. But today the former has a developed economy. The latter has not.

@@T.S.000 quite sure, at the same time Thailand has earned praise from the same institutions for how the economy is managed, namely with a very low unemployment rate. I lived in both countries, and wouldn’t compare them for how Thailand can become again the premier investment destination for manufacturing in SE Asia, which is what needs to be fixed. If I want to put Thailand into a perspective of Singapore, it would take too long pointing out first to the differences. Like benchmarking Luxembourg with Italy.

I think the need for the military's right to participate in politics needs to be revoked according to my opinion. Often the military is used as a tool in power struggles as happened in various countries because the military is given the right to participate in politics and especially if there is a faction in parliament so that the military is truly neutral and its main task from the military is to guard the security and sovereignty of the nation to protect the entire homeland and nation and not just participate in practical politics

Partial right, the main problem is the quality of people. Poor education leads them to be ignorant and somewhat stupid. Most THai are poor but white-washed and want to be like Americans which is impossible in Thailand just like the PH). Get rich quick and lazily, showing off their wealth but mostly fake it. Fix first the people, and the military will subside. All parties are corrupt. It is the rich man's game, offering money-buying votes. it has never changed after 100 years. No matter who wins, for sure will be corrupt and take orders from their boss--the USA. That is all in Thai children's politics.

Thailand's situation didn't even need military intervention to begin with. It started off as a power struggle of a political party which was the ex-courtiers that had lost in 3 elections in a row, and of course, they had a deal with the royal court(and maybe the king himself) to bring the order to the military to overthrow the gov at the time. After that coup, we had an election, and once again they lost. Then there was a second coup after 3 years apart. At the time these people who support the movement of bringing down the gov again and again became known as the royalist, the conservatives, and the nationalist, which is kind of ironic since what they have been doing was causing mayhem, destroying public facilities, breaking into official places, or even forcefully shutting down the national airport for over a week for the sake of releasing the anger for allowing the alleged corrupt prime minister fly out of the country. With the military and monarchy power on their side, they are unstoppable, and they are finally won, the party getting their asses onto parliament seats. After they got in power, they didn't do anything but absolve their supporters' head huncho from the lawsuits for their activities(other than damages to the infrastructures, there were innocent victims by their actions too, and they have never had any compensation from them till this day). People were furious about these one-sided privileges, so they protested against the regime, which cause the royalist to march the street once more with military and police as their chamberlains, this erupted into a civil war. It ended in the third coup in my 30 years life 9 years ago and we have been under the junta government ever since My take is the royalists always have the monarchy powerhouse on their side, even without a military coup they always possess the superiorities and privileges. It's not like we were under a tyrant(but we are now...). So no, we never need a coup, not ever

As from my side, they have implemented some very needed food industry regulations regarding food safety and ingredients to use. However, I am absolutely not sure about the extent some companies are tolerated bypassing these. When I talked with the young people, they are open to new developments and ideas, but have no power. The older ones just want to continue with what is. For me, it is very hard developing in Thailand. And this - so it seems - applies to the entire Thailand. Being a foreigner, I thought it is very very needed that a generation change happens. The old structures are not good and bogging the entire nation down.

@@krollpeter I have a friend in frozen seafood industry, she said the main issue she has to deal with regularly is the "shrimp haggling". It goes like this, she had a contract with shrimp dealers which buy their shrimps from farmers. The thing is the supply got cut off by Chinese hagglers who buy out everything right off the wharves, and also buy off delivery truck as they are moving. Naturally, dealers have to fine farmers for failing to fufill the deliveries, but legal action does nothing since those farmers are so poor and legally declared as bankrupted, they have nothing to be fined. I don't know if it has anything to do with all of this situation, but The junta government is being exposed lately that they've been taking money from illegal Chinese business groups. The biggest one yet is 50 million yuan(and there are a lot of small transactions) which they claim they are all charity money, not bribes. And since their men control anti corruption department, it ended with no further investigation. It is very biased coming from me, but not only they can't uplift the quality of life for the people, but they also sabotage it for their own gains. I don't know what would become of us in the near future, but we are in dire need of change, getting rid of this tyrant is our first priority right now, and hopefully not trading a tyrant for another tyrant

@@otakoob It has to do with the situation. I did notice similar things. Thailand's government seems has a big blind spot on the eyes in the direction of China. For example, a Thai candy company bought a production plant from China. It is a small company. The Chinese gave them a very attractive price offer on some machinery, that was already before significant cheaper as compared to western or Japanese equipment. But they could only get the price under the condition, if they signed a contract to regularly purchase certain raw materials from China along with the deal, binding them for the next 5 years. After a few months the quality of these supplied materials went down the drain, their products became lousy and they lost market share. They could not buy from elsewhere, as they were bound to the contract. That is the moment when I was called in (I am R&D). Certainly, I was not able to help them, as I can't make unsuitable raw materials better. After some time the company was close to bankrupt, and the Chinese took over a significant share for peanuts, literally. By now it is even worse. They mainly produce at super-lowest prices for export to China, using Chinese equipment, Chinese raw materials and Thai labour.

I have no doubt that there is wealth inequality in Thailand. However, the politician at the end of the documentary claims that inequality is in the top 3 globally. This is definitely wrong! A country with abundant natural resources ,situating important geopolitical location seems to be a goldmine of the superpower nation . Modern colonialism tends to infiltrate the education system to make the younger generation forget the roots of the nation-building history of their nations. Promote consumerism and western culture . Forcing to buy lucrative state-owned enterprises via encouraging local governments to legislate privatization acts . To making the monarchy steadily less popular among people so as to eventually transformed into a presidential system so that the deep states could control remotely by weakening the military and discrediting the populace (attemped since the reign of King RaMa 7th). The difficulty to access capital investment for the middle class. The high cost of living according to the capitalist monopoly (foreign nominee owning energy businesses including oil, electricity, water supply, telecommunications) raising the false flag liberal democracy to intervene and create chaos and debt in the target country until finally become to failed states ( like Argentina, Syria, Libya, Sri Lanka, etc.

I would Tax the foreign company for taking or natural resources. Make the pay for the Education of our children with their profit. Why should Thai people pay high fuel cost at the pump? They are stealing our Oil/gas under our nose! Subsidize the fuel to Thai Citizen. When people have high debt and spend more then they earn. They blame the policy maker for not assisting them during COVID-19. Look at Nanking Treaty. The British drug dealer took down the Qing Dynasty. Do you know why HSBC got started? Like it or not We still need Military around. Without the military we will be under foreign control.

Tax the Corporation with 43% starting at 12,800,000.00 Baht. Resend the corporate tax cuts and increase the corporate tax rate to add money to the National budget. Tax the wealthy income over 11,200,000.00 Baht with 37%. 35% of Oil and LNG revenues should be subsidizing to Thai Citizen. Fix Social Security for next and upcoming generation. Every business including street vendor must pay taxes (8% to 27%) over 112,000.00 Baht. How? Each Province will have a Comptroller Agency. Your Thai ID number is tied to Comptroller assign Tax ID number which identify the tax paying business. TAX payer will have a much better retirement money when they retired, disable, or death ( children can received parent benefit until reach the age of 21 years old). Toll Road profit should be added to Transportation and national budget. Education should be FREE up to AA degree. English course is mediatory beginning 3rd grade to College. World History and International Govt. is mandatory for 6th grade to 12th grades. All political candidate must have background check (NO Felonies) and show their last three years of income tax before running for office. End life time police position. The new government should make easier to do business in the country for foreign companies and individuals, and not make it harder like the current Junta did since 2014. Thailand needs to attract foreign know how if wants to improve its productivity level. Rules for obtaining work permits and Visas should be less stringent. Big improvement is also needed with regard to public education from elementary to university level

There's a few really wealthy people in Thailand. Their wealth should be spread among the Thai people. Why should there be few rich while many are poor? The whole whole need to reset and divide all wealth equally among everybody. This is the only fair way. Everybody start with equal footing. We need to make this happen. I'm poor because the rich oppress the poor.

That makes me think twice about investing in Thailand. Also, will the uneducated take over the businesses and run them strategically and allocate capital efficiently? Who will be the workers? There could be more taxes on the rich, but dividing wealth evenly with everyone is crazy. You know English. You could make decent money.

@Andrew S the whole world need to do this, rich countries like USA spread their wealth around world. Everybody equal. You don't work, you don't eat simple as that. People get assigned job according to their skills.
@sociolocomtsac
@sociolocomtsac Жыл бұрын
@@TC..... That has been done many times in history. When has it succeeded? The best a country can do is improve productivity of labor. Increase manufacturing and high-skilled labor, lower taxes, decrease regulations for foreign investment. Already, if you have skills, you can get a good job, if you don't have those skills you can't get a good job. I hired Thais for $2000 US dollars per month for years because they knew English and had good design skills. All you can do is try to give as much equal opportunity as possible, not equal outcome by giving away my business and money to random people, who have no idea how to grow a multi-million dollar business by pitching investors, getting clients, hiring, etc. China tried assigning jobs and many people just lost time and potential during that time. Millions died in the "Great Leap Forward." Who is assigning these jobs? The government? They have complete control over you and your future. Once they have power, you will be nothing but a slave.
