Traditionally these swords are used with a shield not dual wielded. Only at the later dates of ayuthaya when Siam had influence from japan that the guard became more pronounced and some people started dual weilding but it's not a replacement for shields. Swords like that with no guard without a shield is impractical and I don't care how good your muay thai is. Protect yourself first

I would imagine when the shields fell out of use as melee weapons were not primary battlefield weapon anymore they would have maybe started to use more of two weapons combo. These swords are also common tools as machetes over there so they would be very common to always carry around at least in rural settings. In more of civilian context that swords have also played role as personal defence weapon using something in both hands makes lot of sense. We see this in other cultures as well there are examples of that. I think maybe most famously in japan niten ichi ryu i th ink its called for example that you fight with wakizashi on off hand, and katana on the dominant hand so you can block with the other occupy the opponents sword, and simultaneously attack with the other. Usually though its two different lenght weapons like even in Europe parrying dagger, and rapier combo. But if you would for example travel walking down the road with walking stick in medieval Europe having nothing but arming sword for protection, and get attacked even using the stick can be useful as sort of parrying stick on your other hand as you use your sword. Japanese i think sometimes used even the sword scabbard as improvised parrying stick. Then the lack of handguard i wouldnt want to rely on something like japanese tsuba for hand protection same way as crossguard on european sword or even cross guard compared to later period more complex guards. Hand protection or lack of it is more the fencing technigue. In katana fencing you wouldnt use some same technigues as with longsword cos you can rely on the cross to pull them off. Lot of other cultures didnt have much hand protection even on two handed swords its not that massive deal its more technigue you use

He is right. Siam footman normally use shield and spear or sword. But the soldiers that use dual swords are the elites and the most famous dual swords user unit is “หน่วยทะลวงฟัน“ they are like the army breaker. Duty is to strike deep in the army line with deadly speed and elite dual swords skill to create chaos in the enemy army formation.
