I´ve just returned from Thailand and I was shocked by how many shops have opened in the past year, especially in BKK and Pattaya, so there is clearly a huge demand - from tourists from what I see - and a huge amount of money has been invested. I would also hazard a guess that a new tourist market for visitors who enjoy recreational use has opened up which surely the government won´t want to destroy. On the negative side I was slightly disappointed that some tourists seem to think it´s ok to smoke wherever they want.

the amount of shops is not because of the demand, its because its a new market and thais (being rocketscientists) copy and clone business when they think they can make a baht..., trust me most shops are not doing that good, because there is too much competition in the market...

Weed should be legal, period. It sounds to me that the new law suggestions are going backward. I think many weed shops will be out of business soon if these new legislation is passed, and of course, the current shop owners cannot say anything too negative about the proposals, they want to stay in business.

I don't understand why they are trying to reinventing the wheel? There are so many countries with legal canabis regulations. Just do what THEY do and regulate it like alcohol. The tax revenue for this industry for those countries has been huge!!!

The thing you don't want to happen is for barriers-to-entry to get so high that the business becomes corporatized and money gets concentrated with some billionaire rather than many thousands on both the production and sales side. No Anheuser-Busches of Philip Morrises, in other words. The finale of the TV series "Weeds" predicted such a dystopian future.

Cannabis should be just as legal and easy to obtain anywhere as alcohol currently is. No exceptions. It's so easy: As legal and easy to obtain/use as alcohol currently is. Why hold relatively benign, often healing cannabis to any sort of irrational, stricter double standard than perfectly legal alcohol.

One if the huge benefits of legalisation is the innovation of edibles with accurate potency, soft or strong. This also illeviates any 2nd hand smoke and the smell everyone is complaining about, plus users dont have to cripple their lungs. TLDR we need more edibles

Part of the dilemma in Thailand is that if you move toward that it concentrates the economic opportunity (i.e. wealth) on the production side. They're stuck in 1968 with a flower-heavy selection because it has the lowest entry barriers and can benefit the most growers and sellers without concentrating wealth/power with awful corporations as happened with tobacco in the U.S. The disadvantage is it's too unregulated and susceptible to all kinds of problems with bad batches or worse.

Thankfully I don't think we'll ever totally go back to the way it was before. Imperfect as the experience has been, it's at least shown how unreasonably draconian the previous approach was when it came to pot. My own prediction is that it'll be another thing where businesses have to pay police in order to operate, and that'll be mainly in tourist areas. In rural areas with only Thais they'll enforce things a lot more closely and may not have any retail outlets at all.

I think the measures aimed at consumption are really aimed at keeping most Thais away from it and they don't care so much about farangs. You can also make a case that problems with rowdy tourists will go DOWN inasmuch as the pot can substitute for alcohol. Pot tends to mellow people out and, in too much quantity, will couch lock them. Alcohol can make a lot of people boorish or belligerent.

Thanks for the summary but this is Thailand we're talking about here. They banned tobacco smoking in indoor public spaces...how did that go? Places not wanting to comply might just have to pay the police to look the other way. Basically everything is illegal there but it's just a matter of enforcement and police revenue sources and all that.

Sad the cart was placed before the cart. (I have no idea why except a particular politician wanted to become popular to voters) Strict zoning laws and not allowing it to be smoked in public would be "do-able". In the USA, the sale of legal cannabis in certain states where it is legal, (with regulations and zoning), brings in a lot of tax revenue which is spent on various public projects. This is a big reason for Thailand not to totally ban it.

(of which there are many...) i had a shop with my thai wife, we made the license paid a good amount for the shop and made it look nice, and in the end we got scr*wed out of the business by a couple of somchai's without a license and a shitty looking shop and bars that sell on the side... (in other words, competition that shouldnt exist) the whole weed industry right now is a big sh*tshow filled with cheaters and bullsh*t artists and by now i honestly dont care if it even stays legal...
