This is the most beautiful opera I have ever seen. I've seen it 4-5 times and have the DVD so I can see it whenever I wish to refresh my heart. This version by the Met Opera with Renee Fleming and Thomas Hampson is the best. This aria brings me to tears each time I hear it. Very meaningful in the story line. Buy it - rent it - borrow it. Just see it! You'll love it too. Thank you for posting this beautiful scene.

I've seen this in Helsinki Opera. It was the first proper opera that I saw and fell in love right away. Planning on getting this version on dvd

advertisement of the Helsinki version. kzbin.info/www/bejne/q6TId6Zpetatqc0 it was to be seen free online just a while ago. Sadly, not any more. I especially loved Thais outfit with golden wings in this production

The studio CD recording Fleming/Hampson did is even more beautiful than the DVD - I recommend that too!

Yes! This is a beautiful opera and an incredible performance. It just does not get any better than this. Both Renee Fleming and Thomas Hampson are wonderful.

This is pure talent in both the music and the performer.

I meant to say the title of this aria is "Oh Messenger of God". He is a monk who comes to save this Egyptian courtesan from her wicked ways and is smitten by her instead. The Met version staging is magnificent and so are the costumes (and of course, the gorgeous music!)

I believe that Fleming in her repertoire and especially Thais, has achieved in terms of musicianship, singing, glamour, artistic beauty of her stage presence and acting to approach Callas' levels.. We havent seen anything so beautiful on opera stage since Callas .. and thank God her voice wasnt for the callas repertoire..

Agreed. In Strauss and Massenet she reached an unparalleled level.

I'm not sure why I feel compelled to thank you for this comment, but ... Thank you. There seems to be so much bashing of Renèe, its very nice to see a comment I so whole heartedly agree with. I'm sure it happens to all singers, but you definitely take note when its someone you are a true fan of. Thank you so much for posting this. It is truly beautiful.

Quelle voix envoûtante servit par une mélodie que seul, le grand Massenet a le secret.

My favorite. They were both victims of religion...religion that was understood the wrong way: that you have to abstain altogether and run away from life...

Very sad. What's sadder is that I think they could have been good for each other if he wasn't such a righteous prick

She is pretty, the voice is passable, but what a bad actress. She obviously doesn't understand a word she's singing. Besides, her French pronunciation is so bad that neither do we. Next to her Sutherland is a speech therapist. 😅

“The voice is passable”??? Renée’s voice is MUCH BETTER than just “passable”!!!
