Thalapathi was a Pan-Indian album that kickstarted the BOOM in cassette sales in the INDIAN music industry. "Raakkamma" was such a sensational song that it was COPIED TWICE by Bollywood. Tu tu tara song, later Saif Ali Khan & co. tried to copy it and got burnt! It was at #4 in the BBC World's Top-10 songs. IR tuned ALL the songs in half-a-day! GENIUS of Maestro ILAYARAJA lies in the way he introduced and infused a Thevaram hymn in the middle of a dance / item number. Sundari song's prelude received a STANDING OVATION from Bolly musicians who played it. Album had superior sound quality too because it was recorded in Bombay. Rap artist M.I.A sampled the rhythm of Kaattukuyilu song for her album. Of course, the OST (iconic Background score) is also something no other Indian music director is capable of. It is not mere "nostalgia". Yet, the people go gaga for everyone else EXCEPT Ilayaraja! Despite all these, IR did not even get a State award for this album, but he was given a Filmfare award for this album (the only time Filmfare gave him an award for a Tamil album!!)!
