Thalassemia is a hereditary blood disorder passed down from parents. Children with thalassemia major usually show symptoms when they are between 4 and 6 months old. Dr Sisir Kumar Patra, Consultant Haematologist, Haemato Oncologist at Narayana Hospital, Barasat, shares important information on World Thalassemia Day.
In thalassemia major, children can become tired with mild exertion and appear pale. Treating thalassemia major is challenging, requiring regular blood transfusions and chelation therapy. Today, the only cure for thalassemia major is allogeneic stem cell transplantation. This complex treatment option highlights the importance of preventing thalassemia.
Dr Patra urges society to focus on prevention rather than treatment. Thalassemia is inherited when both parents have a minor in thalassemia. It is crucial to raise awareness about this genetic disorder and encourage testing among couples planning to start a family. Early screening can help identify carriers and reduce the risk of passing on the disease. Together, we can prevent new cases and improve the quality of life for those affected!
