Brilliant! Back in year 2000 I was in Turkey and so I visited Miletus. I knew Thales had lived there so I made a special point of walking up and down the ancient roads, sitting in the amphitheatre, et-al, and thinking all the time 'I'm sure Thales walked here, or there, or sat on this seat in the amphitheatre!' For me I think it was a great adventure to imagine I walked in the steps of this great man. He's an inspiration to study mathematics.

From looking at some of the comments, people need to study more philosophy and focus less on their animal desires.

Really informative video of one of the influential seven sages...Thales did more outside of looking at the heavens, falling in a well then being laughed at by that thracian girl...he inspired the great Pythagoras to go to Egypt and discover more about nature and proper usage of the soul and mind back in ancient times...brilliant video Socratica staff!

@@DLeeThales-zz8ny Yeah the lore around Pythagoras and Thales. Is that they knew each other. Which is interesting because Thales Theorm can be used to prove right angled obtuse and acute Isoceles and Scalene triangles. But never an Equilateral triangle because it uses a circle. For that you need Pythagoras's Theorm which uses squares and not circles. For example A²+B²=C² is an Equilateral triangle. So is A³+B⁴=C⁵ an Equilateral Triangle. Moreover Plato's analogy of the Divided in the Republic. Needs Thales Theorm to be constructed properly. Pythagorean Theorm can't do that either. Also in Euclid's Elements. Thales and Pythagorean Theorms are listed in the propositions.

Agree. Content was great, but I was wondering about Anaximander as well. considering I am just learning about Thales of Miletus now. it would be helpful to have Anaximander mentioned.

Thales studied in Africa (Kemet) and encouraged his students to go to Africa for their education. The properties of the 3, 4, 5 right triangle were used by Africans in 2700 BCE to square the corners of the first stone complex built in the world, the Saqqara Complex. Saqqara covers over 3.5 miles. Therefore, Thales taught what he learned from the African High Priests.

Possibly, Thales did not even exist… if one adds up all the stories about Thales, then he was poor. And rich. He married and remained a lifelong bachelor. He went to Egypt where he learned everything. No, he went to Babylon. How do you guys know this all for sure - there is nothing left of Thales, no writings and no contemporary documents. But tell me, how are you so certain ?
@Humanity2102 Жыл бұрын
@@Arriyad1 You are missing the point. We do know that Pythagorus and others when to Africa for their education. The bottom line is that it was Africans who educated and influenced the Greek philosophers.

The western educators see world only up to current land of Europe. They are ignorant people, who think world progressed as per their beliefs. India had been creating a book called Panchang every year. It is published by three separate schools of astrology in india. It accurately computes planetary positions of nine planets and moons w.r.t sun. Historical evidence takes us back to 7000 BC where this very book which is created for yearly reference is used to compute best time to marry, best match, best time to go far war etc. best time buy or sell etc. almost every Indian knows Maths better than educated westerners. A road side vegetable vendor in india who has no formal western education would compute cost of your purchase faster and accurately than a westerner can imagine . You can buy a dozen different items from a shop having separate price in different quantities even in fractions, the shop keeper would calculate your purchase mentally and you would be wonder stuck. Perhaps you have never travelled india to see this. Most westerners believe the term middle earth from lord of the rings triology or believe in game of thrones era.

There is no proof that even Thales existed. There is no any original manuscripts, no complete works even in secondary sources, like post-Socratic philosophers' works! In contrast, we have found many mathematical tablets from Mesopotamia. In Indian and Chinese texts we also read that there were many mathematicians, So called Pythagorean equation were already in the Vedic texts! So how can Thales be considered the first mathematician in the World? Better to say, he was the first philosopher and mathematician in the Greece or Western culture! Please, get rid of Euro-centrism and give acknowledgement to the real scholars!
