Thalia Capo Review

I was researching getting a new capo for my husband since he also has a 12 string and a few mandolins. After seeing your clip I decided to buy him two Thalia capos for St. Nick's day in Netherland. Not only do they look cool but we were amazed by how much the guitar sound improved. His previous capo was designed for a 12 string but because of the shape the pressure on the strings wasn't evenly distributed. Thanks for sharing your Thalia capo review. It really helped me decide and we agree that they are amazing capos and easy to use.

NIce review Erich although I think you missed the biggest difference between this capo and all of the others and that's the second bag of inserts that you set aside as "another sliding tuning kit". They're made of Teflon and are hard plastic. TOTALLY different than what we're use to seeing on a capo. When I got my Thalia, the initial setup with the rubber pads wasn't anything that really impressed me too much tonally but the Teflon pads totally blew me away. I never realized how much the rubber on a capo muted the sound. I've got a new perspective over the possibilities with this capo. The tonal qualities are not compromised and I don't have to retune any strings once you have the right pad installed. Two thumbs up and 5 stars to Thelia Capos!

The capo I find myself using more than any other is the D'Addario NS Pro (FKA Planet Waves). I have a small "collection" of capo's, including a few D'Addarios. a couple of Shubbs. a Dunlop, and a G7, but the simple NS Pro is the one I like best (I have two of them). You're not going to make quick changes with it (they do have another capo that you can), but what I really like about it is that when you put it on your guitar, a thumbscrew is used to gradually apply pressure, and in my experience, it keeps the guitar from going out of tune. For about $15 you can't beat it!

So, I ordered this capo recently. I went on the site and got the "black chrome finish with dragon abalone", the "dragon abalone" being the shell inlay. It was about $80 roughly with tax. Before ordering, I looked at a lot of reviews and looked into what information the website has to offer. On the site there's this video showing how the capos are made too. What I gathered is that the capo had a lot of quality to it, and if you were willing to pay that much money, you wouldn't regret it. I bought it out of excitement from having just gotten this new martin 12-string. Now, on the site, it'll tell you all about its whole fretpad thing, and how it fits on any guitar, ukulele, or whatever. That included 12 strings.. So I waited anxiously for it and when it came I was so happy. I opened it up and took the capo out. First thing I noticed was that the inlay looked NOTHING like it did on the site or even on the box. It looked cracked, glittery, and ugly. Like a child put it in with glue. In comparison to the rest of the capo it just didn't look right. Optimistically I sorta thought "well, from a distance it looks okay.. I don't need it to look that special anyway" then I got to the fretpads (oh and can I just say, I enjoyed the way it was packaged, it was very neat). I already knew the radius of my 12 string was 16, and upon looking through the list of guitars this comes with, I knew the martin 12 string called for a 16. So, I put in the fretpad labeled "16" right in. I put it on my guitar annddd the low E strings would not get pressed down enough. No matter what way I put it on or what fret I put it on, the A strings and E strings barely got any sound out. I tried every fret pad that came with the capo and, as the manual said, the 16 was the best out of them. I tried it on my normal acoustic and even my electric and it works perfectly. Just doesn't go well on my 12 string at all. The lever you press on the capo is also a little hard to press for me but that's not really their fault, I'm just sorta weak. But it doesn't help. So overall, honestly? If I was at the mall or a guitar store looking at capos and someone wanted to sell me this for $80, it'd be an immediate "no". It looks ugly and it doesn't work on my new favorite guitar. Not saying this capo's terrible or that the company's terrible, just hope you can all read this and think before paying 70-80 dollars and making the mistake I did

In positive support of your review...I put one of these on a mint Gibson J-45 custom at the 3rd fret (G) duh and left it there for months. As I have many acoustic and even more electric gtr's and many different capos for different scenarios but I digress...I grabbed said Gibson and removed the capo, put my hands on the neck and felt something. Upon looking the capo had indented the finish with 2 straight indents right at the 3rd fret. I immediately emailed Thalia direct and told them my situation and they offered to have my guitar re-finished or over sprayed at the point of damage. I told them that it's not like a ding I did using my gtr it's the point of their product did it while just sitting there. They replied asking what would make me happy and I blurted out please just send me a B stock and asked for a specific color and inlay. Now I have 2 of these useless dent makers on my desk. If any one wants a deal just reply to this comment and we will work out the best deal you will ever get on one of these "pretty little POS's" They sent me a fire engine red inlayed one? Nice! Maybe it will match my lipstick? FYI the daughter of the father / daughter owners of Thalia had the idea of making capos that would match Taylor Swift's outfits like jewelry. This is how this capo co. began. Not to make your guitar sound better, to make it match your outfit! Peace and Maximum Respect to all involved

These capos are worth every cent you spend for them. Your guitar stays in tune and you can store them right behind (up against) the nut of the guitar. Finally, a capo that doesn't cause me to tune and re-tune every time I place it on, or take it off the neck...and too top it off, they are very nice looking. The bag that it comes in is great to keep you capo looking good. Use the bag to polish your capo when it's inside the bag. I have bought a few for my different guitars and have given away my old capos as I can't go back to them after using the Thalia.

Shubb standard user here. I went to a local stockist of Thalia capo's to try on a Martin and a Northwood. Found the thalia to be a bit awkward initially. Agree with a review below it is bulky. I was applying it at the fret, which may not be necessary based on their marketing pitch. Perhaps if placed in between the frets, it might not be in the way. Intonation not any better top to bottom then the shubb regardless of insert used, which surprised me.

I recently bought myself a Thalia capo and I love it, perfect tuning wherever I put it on the neck. As for the price, while it may seem a little on the high side you have to remember you won't need another capo, this one will fit pretty much any guitar. I have several guitars with at least 3 different fretboard radii. If I bought a G7th for each of them I'd be well out of pocket compared to a single Thalia that will work with all of them. Plus they're beautiful. I'll probably end up with more than one anyway.............

Nice capo, Stylish, etc. but im not too keen that it cant be stored on the headstock. its too wide for that. So i has to be put over the nut, which might get in the way for open chords. Not convinced its worth 60 to 100 bucks.

Thank you for your informative review! I've been long looking (drooling) at these beauties, put off by the price but intrigued by the design, quality & looks. However this month hubby & kids pitched in for my birthday, & told me get whatever customization I wanted! I play a Taylor 810 in our worship band & really struggling with out of tune strings constantly with taking the capo off & on; so much that I tend to play songs in order of no capo 1st in a set, the once I have it on I try to not take it off! I've watched many demos wondering whether it's easier to put it on from the treble (recommended) or bass side, & it seems pretty much equal, but I need to know since it will be personalized (with the word 'worship' & a white mother of pearl dove ~ been working with the custom shop & it's going to be gorgeous!) Can you please give your opinion on which would be easier to squeeze (for a 60+ year old female) Thanks & God bless!

Thanks for this review. I just had a capo mishap where I tuned my guitar with capo on then had to retune with it off. The next song in the set came up quicker than expected and I didn't really get things tuned until about the 3rd song. I think this might be the capo for me.

sorry to disagree, but i have not been pleased with this product. i wanted to love it but i just don't. i have tried the capo on three different guitars, and i have tried every single one of the included fretpads. no matter what, i have a buzz, or a deadened string, or both, or those problems on multiple strings, or all of the above. notice that in this video, when eric says that every string is "perfectly pressed down" (at 4:35) strings D and G actually are deadened. the design is simply not great. the profile is so high that the capo is a real obstacle to the playing hand. try to form an A chord with fingers two, three, and four (index finger free), and your hand has nowhere to go because it bumps up against the formidable capo. try to form a traditional B7 chord and same problem. if you look on their own video, the "interchangeable fretpads" video, at around 1:15, you can see the guitarist who is doing the demo bump up against the capo, and the capo even moves! not a great design! this problem is slightly improved if you apply the capo from the top side, but that is certainly not how it is designed or demonstrated. even so, i ordered my capo with the inlay oriented to the bottom side application (their order form asks you to specify your orientation) and now i have a capo that reads backwards if i apply it from the top side. so that's screwed up. in any case, it is still not a perfect fix, as even the other side of the capo has a fairly tall profile that gets in the way when your hand is at the very lowest part of the guitar (at the high e string). if you DO bump the capo, the grip is not very strong, so, as in their own video, you can expect it to slide, which is also not good. the capo is nowhere as easy to apply and operate as they would have you believe. it is ergonomically awkward. that is probably true of most capos, and you either have to use two hands, or angle the guitar just so to apply the capo. but thalia has certainly not fixed this. they suggest it is so easy to operate you can do it with one hand, but don't count on it: you may have to use two hands and/or turn the guitar flat to do it. look at a youtube video where a young asian girl is unboxing the capo and she shows that she has to set the guitar down flat to apply it. (kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4OQlYChebmnnpI) she is young and has small hands, it's true, but i have huge hands and they are strong, and this is nevertheless what i find. yes, you can MOVE the capo with one hand, as Eric does here, and that is nice, but this is AFTER applying the capo in the first place (see paragraph below). one thing that does seem nicely done, and IS as depicted by the company website, is the ability to move the capo relatively easy and quickly, even while you are playing. this does seem to bear itself out. that is, ONCE it is ALREADY on the guitar, it is pretty easy to slide it around. as i thought about it, however, it occurred to me that the way they present this feature is a neat marketing idea, but that this is virtually useless in the real world. i have played guitar for 36 years and i have never had the need to move a capo DURING a song, or to move a capo THAT FAST between songs! if you want to "play in multiple keys" or "change keys" as some of their testimonials suggest, you--guess what--change the key/chords you are playing! you do not rely upon a capo! they've sold that as a nice marketing idea, and i fell for it, but it is useless and misguided. Eric says that this is the only option, "unless you want to play bar chords"--well, yeah, that's what guitarists do sometimes, and I can't see relying on a capo change DURING a song to achieve this. furthermore, they suggest that you can even use the capo as a slide. if you're still with me on this review, you can predict my reaction to this: yes, a nice marketing idea, but useless in the real world, because if you want to create a slide sound, you just--wait for it--use a slide! and really, plastic does not make for a good slide sound, anyway. further misguidedness is with the interchangeable fretpads. a nice idea, but now that i've tried them, this is also virtually useless. even if the idea really worked, do you really want to be fooling around with multiple inserts? every time you change guitars? do you want to tote around a little pack of pads and keep up with that? how about just one capo that works on every guitar? oh, yeah, i have that now, with the traditional capo. which cost around $20. as i said in the first paragraph, even if i wanted to fool with the pack of seven inserts, they do not work as advertised. there is a buzz or a deadened string with every insert (remember i have tried every insert on at least three different guitars). the one insert that gets the best results is--guess what--the "classical" one, which is pretty much just a straight-across pad. in other words, all that fussing with shapes and radii, and you come back to pretty much a flat pad anyway. wow. i fell for it. this is the case with the RUBBER fretpads. the "teflon" pads are even worse. here again, as i thought about it, i concluded there is a reason that other capos use rubber. it is because the rubber bends and gives to adapt to the strings and the shape of the fretboard. what thalia markets as "teflon coating" may be something fancy, but, to me, now that i have them and have tried them, it is just fancy marketing for hard plastic and it has no give, so it can hardly adapt to the fretboard. i have pretty much thrown away the teflon fretpads and only retain some slight hope in the rubber ones. on the positive side, the capo is a beautiful work of art. it is handsome and looks good on the guitar. i will keep it for that reason alone, plus not wanting to fool with returns, but it is hardly functional and i come out infinitely better with my old trusty capos (keyser and G7, etc). this is a great example of a wonderful marketing campaign; chris and his daughter make a great story, and the tale of the taylor swift poster and all that is totally charming. but, in the end, they simply haven't built a better mousetrap. if i see different with this capo, i will update this post. perhaps it will "settle in" or some such thing, but i don't see it at this point. good luck to chris and thalia but i'm not feeling the value.

avbsvideo I wouldn't be too sure. I haven't really seen these points get brought up elsewhere. At least not to this extent, that is. Let's be honest, their main selling point is their aesthetics. They do look gorgeous and that's what catches everyone's eyes. As for their functionality, they work well. Every review I've seen claims they don't affect intonation or at least do a great job at minimizing that effect. The capos themselves are more robust than others but still feel small since there's no fulcrum handles sticking out like in most other designs. They're easy to install, and unless you have a very weak grip, can be done single handedly. However, let's be honest, most capos can be installed with only one hand so that's a moot point for the most part. What gives the Thalia an edge is that they're very forgiving in their positioning when using the designated pads (also the reason they're so easy to adjust on the fly mid song). They don't have to be installed particularly close to the fret. This allows you to set it slightly father away from the fret and be able to give yourself some space for your hand. Keep in mind, all capos interfere with your fretting hand to a certain degree. The Thalia capos sometimes do slide a bit when bumped but that's because of the low friction due to the Teflon. However, remember that they're pretty forgiving in their positioning? That means even if you bump it a bit it'll still continue to clamp that particular fret (they don't slide THAT much, merely pivot in their position slightly). Also, the interchangeable pads work as advertised and are incredibly easy to change. The only other option to counter intonation problems with capos is to own multiple dedicated, proper radius ones for each guitar. I think this is a very reasonable compromise, right? Now, if you simply don't want to be having to adjust parts constantly then just leave it set with the 12" rubber pad installed so that it's configured like most average capos. It won't perform at its optimum like it was designed to do so but it will work like any other capo... except it will still look stunning. That's why I find many of the complaints to be ludicrous and founded in unrealistic expectations and lack of understanding of the product and how to use it. The Thalia is essentially a high-end luxury product able of consolidating all your capo needs into one tool.

The quick start guide says that the rubber fretpads are meant for 12-string guitars (and other instruments with octave strings). Each capo comes with a set of both rubber and teflon fretpads (I think). It is one of the best, and most attractive looking, capos I have ever owned and no need to retune (I only have experience using the teflon fretpads).

I did experience some trouble on my 12-string which I tune down a full step. However, a recent entry on the Thalia blog mentions some known issues so I got in touch with their support and they are now sending me a newly developed set of taller fretpads for free which I will test on my 12-string.

This is my second attempt at a review I guess you only post the good reviews 1st: The packaging sucks it got to me in 2 pieces and was warped was told it was from your first run of the new packaging . 2nd: I contacted customer service it took 2 days for first reply told they would send old packaging that didn't have problem staying closed but never sent it. so I thought maybe they needed a reply so I emailed them a 2nd time told them to send old packaging or new fixed packaging or a discount on the gift box since I had decided that was my best bet to resolve this. 4 days later I get a reply says they will send me the old packaging when I buy my next capo and gift box. So since 12-19-2017 This problem still has not been fixed.. 3rd: I love the capo its the best I ever used but buying anything else from you till this is fixed is not going to happen. I had one given to me, for which I was very thankful, but no longer use it. It is perhaps the bulkiest capo I have ever used - not to mention you cannot adjust the tension. If you are reading this, I do not recommend.

I still don't get the REAL benefit of these aside from being pretty... I can (and do) do all of that (including the one-handed/one-position key changes) with my G7th capos; and they're smaller, and less than 1/3 the price of a Talia capo, plus I can pick my string tension on the fly (great if you want the capo to act as a string dampener).

I own the G7th as they are the Capos I used before the Thalia. Now my G7th's are waiting for new homes. They are a fix radius...so if by chance, they are a match for your guitar, then you're good.

Maybe I've just been lucky; but I've currently got 15 guitars ranging from ES-335 to Les Paul, Telecaster to Danelectro, and Strats to acoustics; and I've never had a problem with the radius when videos like this are telling me that I should because Gibson and Fender are so different...

Pretty to look at, but big, heavy, and clunky to use. I did not see any difference between it and my Shubbs. I think it's over hyped, and over priced. I returned it for a refund and had to wait a week for the refund . Very slow response from customer service when trying to get the return instructions, several unanswered emails, and phone calls that went to voicemail every time.

@@jeislo355 It just doesn't work for me. With all my guitars, with all fretpads, with all positions there was pretty strong detuning issues. More than can be tolerated, especially in live situations. When I wrote email to the company (I'm past 90 days), they tried cach my guitars, wrong setup, strings etc. But why my guitars are working with Shubbs like a charm? So, I read a lot of very positive reviews and maybe Thalia works for other people, but for me it was an unusable, pricey jewellery. Tried to love but i hated it. Anyway, I sold it.
