Peter Sellers went to my old secondary school, St Aloysius College in Highgate, North London. Good to see this. A great actor. I was two when he died. Thank god for KZbin for sharing memories like this.

The best Thames announcer or one of them! Peter Marshall!! Wonder what he does now!! Heard he was a property developer last time I read somewhere!!

The exact date is Thursday 24th July 1980 as this was the date when Peter Sellers died!

No mention, of course, that the Friday line-up would be shown on the competitor, LWT... Of course, late on a Thursday there wasn't much else to fall back on when there was time to fill. Previewing next Monday night's highlights, on a Thursday, might have seemed just too weird, I suppose.

+MQsCues Thames and LWT hated each other, so it is no shock that he just called it ITV instead of LWT.

Relations, whilst still nowhere near as cosy as C*****n got with LWT, did seem to improve a tiny bit in the 80’s, as Thames did acknowledge LWT more at the Friday 5:15 handover, and Thames agreed to provide the 15 minute long Thames Weekend News from 1982 to 1988 for LWT, though the IBA did suggest both companies collaborate to create a seven day news service, but that never happened until C*****n usurped Thames. The legendary Peter Marshall even joked during one handover in 1988 (available on KZbin) that “the South Bank want your body!”

In the early days I think Thames used the b/w ident to signify a b/w film is about to be shown.

They used to have an afternoon slot for a variety of vintage movies on Mondays and Fridays and used the b/w ident for the b/w films.

LOL TV Cream said it was a mess and it was. Bless. They don't make TV like this any more, sadly :)

Thanks for the video! I remember that announcer very well, just like yesterday, I think I thought he was quite cute ;-) God that Lager ad was dire!!

Wasteland Report. Sounds like a good read. ITV wouldn't change it's schedule for a dead actor these days.

I'd forgotten they used a black and wehite ident for black and white films! Thames wqere clearly up agianst it that night, Peter Marshall can be seen getting into his chair before his announcement and having to read from his notes, and then after a long pause of black going to a menu before the film was ready. The interviewer on Thames Report looks like a sort of serious Doc Cox!

Ah, yes ITV used to show Olympics coverage back then, cant remember if they ever showed the Winter Olympics but they showed the Summer up until 1988 IIRC

Lots of dead air in that junction - I know the film was a change to the scheduled programmes, but was it networked and by whom, I wonder? Obvioulsy didn't come along at the expected time!

If Thames hadn't continued taking What the Papers Say for all those years, I imagine it would have died long before its transfer to C4.

In 1990 Granada sold it to BBC2 after it was only shown in late 1988 in the Thames, Granada and Grampian areas ONLY.
