the feeling of relief when ayame steps into that room is SO real, it makes me so happy for yuki that he gained the courage to stand up to his mom from it!! mayu was trying to help but yuki needed ayame’s support there so bad, it truly is a relief to see yuki FINALLY get the help from a family member that he’d been wanting for so long.

Every time I watch this episode, I watch the last scene on loop. The song that Momiji plays only amplifies the pain that breaks my heart when I realize that Kyo's words, in addition to showing how he prioritizes Tohru's happiness over the love he feels for her, also show how he is resigned to the fate of being imprisoned.

the "was she always this small" line always hit me, as someone who have a terrible parent, even when i was a young adult i fear them like monsters or evil gods, let them treat me terribly and boss me around just because "im the parent and i know best". until one day, after finding a healthy support group and years of therapy, i found that they where normal people, i wasnt a scare child anymore that had to listen to everything my parents say just because they where older, and then i could move on, i stop resenting them, we never get a good relationship, but wasnt bind to them just because they were family.

I love the detail of Tohru wearing the ribbon Yuki gave her as a subtle way to show that she's rooting for him despite saying she won't try to meddle too much

The quote: “My words have no meaning or power and die before reaching you. I remember thinking that if that were the case, I never wanted to speak again” references back to the season 1 episode with Kisa where Haru reveals that Yuki also stopped speaking for a while. And that he would curl in a ball and just wouldn’t speak, protecting himself. Considering what we know now about how his mother treated him, how Ayame ignored him, and soon to be revealed how Akito treated him, it makes sense as to why Yuki would view his own words, thoughts, and feelings, as powerless and useless. Him being able to break out his shell and be his true self is such an amazing journey to watch.

I love seeing Ayame finally figure out how to support Yuki in the way that he needs. Up till now, Ayame has been trying in his usual self-centric way to reach out, but sucking all the air out of the room in the process - this time he ran interference with his mom and gave Yuki space to speak which is the thing he most needed. Aya's finally learning! And maybe even Hatori will be proud of him. 🤣 Mayu is having quite the day with the Somas, though - first the invisible duel with Shigure, then Yuki's terrible mom and then Ayame's dramatic entrance.And that's after Uotani deciding on the fly to be a model, and Hanajima setting her bar at the lowest possible point. Bet Mayu will be as glad as anyone to get the teacher/parent conferences over with! Momiji just breaks my heart over and over. I just...he deserves everything good, and I hope someday his dreams come true. I think Kyo assuring Tohru that he'll support her if she falls for someone else breaks her heart because - well, if the person you love so clearly had no hope that they urged you to find someone else....that's not what Tohru wants. At all.

A bit of manga trivia in regards to the song mentioned in 25:20 . In the original manga, the song that Tohru mentions is "When You Wish Upon a Star." I am sure there are various reasons why they chose a different title in the anime. Other note, it's excellent that you ended up with two episodes in a row in this video featuring two of the best boys (Aya and Momiji) being their absolute bestest for the people they care so much about.

So the title Tohru says in Japanese is "Umareru Negai", and "Birth of Wishes" is just a direct translation of that. But more importantly, "Umareru Negai" is also the name of the song that plays in ep 5 of season 1, when Kyo and Yuki pick up Tohru from her relatives' house-- and it does match the melody Momiji plays on his violin! Not sure if they just wanted to reference that moment or decided to go with that to avoid copyright issues tho lol

I love it too! It is Aya realizing that Yuki's greatest weakness is Aya's greatest strength (confidence and force of personality) and him employing that strength when Yuki needed it the most.

Really glad you stuck with it this far. Absolutely one of my favorite episodes. I'd always found Ayame's flamboyance kind of annoying, but once you see him and Yuki interacting with their mother, everything falls into place. Ayame's exaggerated personality is a defense mechanism that forces their mother to arms length (and holy guacamole does it work!), but in doing so he set Yuki up to become the object of her ambitions and always felt guilty about it. This is great writing.
