Do not listen to the comment above me. No one here says どいたしまして, and if you do people will think you are extremely rude. Same goes for いいえ, that sounds really direct and unnatural. It is better to say 大丈夫です.

@@Ichigo_the2nd Yes, it does. If someone says “thank you” and all you do is say “no.”, does that not seem rude to you? If you are going to say no, it is better to say a full sentence, like “no, it’s okay!” Or “no, do not thank me.” But still, you can say both of those sentences without needing to say “no.”

on the rarest occasions (probably just anime) you might encounter れいをいう (reiwoiu) and if ive understood correctly, that is equivalent of «i owe you my thanks». kind of how important people (kings or duke equivalent) would talk
@user-iv8ex1ek4j
@user-iv8ex1ek4j 5 ай бұрын
礼 (れい) is _thanks_ or _gratitude._ 言う (いう) is _(to) say._ 礼を言う simply means _(to) thank (someone)._ A direct translation would be something like, “Thanks, I say.”

@@zoearcee5909 First and foremost, if you mean that _exact_ phrase, you’d only say that to someone with the same age (or social status) or someone younger. As you have mentioned, you’ll hear that in anime. But, you’ll probably encounter that in TV dramas, movies, etc. Anywhere someone would like to sound “cool”. There are many ways to translate that depending on the scenario. • I owe you one • You rock • Much obliged • Much appreciated • I’ll never forget this • ...

That’d be nice but would probably require more effort. Japanese has _short_ vowels. Just remember that and you should be able to pronounce more than 99.9% of the words properly.

@@user-iv8ex1ek4j Thank you for this information! It helps me understand a lot better. Can you help me with something else? I notice there is a "u" in "onegaishimasu" but it isn't pronounced. Why is that?
@user-iv8ex1ek4j
@user-iv8ex1ek4j 5 ай бұрын
@@jasonsamuels5692 No problem. There’s at least a couple of ways we can answer that. First, there’s a “u” there because there are no consonants in Japanese that could stand alone except for (the ending) “ん” (n). Here are the basic (Hiragana) characters in Japanese starting with the “s” sound: • さ → sa • し → shi • す → su • せ → se • そ → so As you can see, *one character* in Japanese is romanized as _two or three letters._ Those letters are considered as a unit-you _cannot_ separate them. So, even though, _sometimes_ the “i” in _shi_ or the “u” in _su_ is silent (devoiced), you cannot simply drop them. They must stay. Second is related to the above paragraph. Those vowels become voiceless _when placed between two voiceless consonants._ Or, unless accented, _between a voiceless consonant and a pausa._ Look up “Japanese phonology” or “Elision in Japanese” to learn more.

Great video Sayaka. Nobody in Western countries thank their teachers! Teachers are not treated with great respect and reverence in Western countries, unlike in Japan. Teachers are paid and that is all the thanks that they get! This is sad but true. The infamous last day at school for school leavers is marked by bad behaviour of every kind and not a word of thanks to the poor teachers who have to put up with it.
