Yeah Terraformer was an incredible, incredible album where I think they stepped up their game in every way possible (and they were coming from an already high position)

This is a song I find super practical live but not just chill out coherent song. It’s super technical and definitely with the kinda jazzy idea of having a song where everyone can riff off eachother- everyone has their own tiny moment, and I hope to hear this or Rube Goldberg variations in concert another time in my life! Sadly enough, their main singer, Sal, just left, so it may be more difficult- but if they keep going, more instrumental tracks would be great until they find a new singer

Why did he leave? I thought he was the weakest part of the band but he was their front so it would be interesting to hear someone else in his place. These guys are badass! I hope you see them

The opening theme can be heard throughout. Check the rhythm section from the opening under the horn solos, the melody revisited a little later, and then the full bore theme for the outro. It's varied in presentation, but it's there

That said, check out Son Of A Serpent off the same record. You'll like it.

one of my favorite songs! it is very cool to see someone enjoy it on their first reaction, so i show this to my jazz friends and just seeing someone enjoy it and just enjoying the song with someone is great, which makes this video great to watch!

TYS are such a fun band. For me, it's like strength in ideas, but weakness in songs. Not always! Often enough though. I'm a strong believer in a tune for every mood and they definitely scratch an itch though.

The point of this song seems to be "everybody gets a solo" ... this is one you throw into the middle of a set so that everyone gets a chance to show off and the singer can go get a sandwich.

one gets 2 solos, trumpet and flugelhorn

They definitely show their talent in this album but I'm really a sucker for their first album. It has way more emotion to it. I keep meaning to listen to some Fish. There's also a Beardfish sound going on in this, who also sound like Fish, and have also been mentioned by Mike Portnoy in that interview I referred to before. I totally get the Napoleon Dynamite description, that cracked me up when you said that because it's just so accurate. Also it cracked me up last year when Thank You Scientist released a cover of Eddie Murphy's Party All The Time.

haha Napolean D was a badass movie btw...:) So, in their first album what song would you recommend?

@@captainmorgan1978 I've been thinking about it a lot. It's always so difficult for me to pick a song. I'm lucky enough to have the time to just listen to albums start to finish. I want to suggest Blood on the Radio. I know you'll like it, but its similar to the ones you've heard, except cranked up to 11. I kind of want to suggest something a bit different and more chill with a stronger vocal focus like Absentee. But I also have to hear your reaction to a song that I think sounds like Dream Theater, In the Company of Worms. Go with what you're feeling at the time based on that. Sorry I can't pick! It's like dividing a painting up into 10 pieces and choosing which piece to show someone.

Great reaction! For a more coherent theme, I’d say Everyday Ghosts or Blood on the Radio might be worth a listen. With these guys they traverse so many genres that I feel like you never get bored with them, but it’s also hard to all be in unison on a request. I can even convince my pop punk sister who’s disgusted by prog to listen to a few of their punk influenced songs. And as underrated as YTSE is, it’s always got to be stream of consciousness for me
@captainmorgan19784 жыл бұрын
Yea a good one too! :) probably my 3rd fav :) It is true that when i was going through the requests for TYS there wasn't any clear winner...

I really like TYS....not all their stuff but their more proggy stuff. Some tunes you should check out would be Terraformer (the title track) and Psychopomp off Stranger Heads Prevail. EAch has a great guitar solo in them as well as very catchy melodies that get some emphasis.

@@captainmorgan1978 hey how do I donate to do a playlist for you? I already know what I'd want on it: TYS "Psychopomp". Haken "Initiate". Rush "La Villa Strangiato". Frost "Pocket Sun". Steve Vai "Knappsack"

Can't say you're wrong about this not being a great, coherent song, but man I love this song, it flows well enough and is too much fun and has some nasty solos. As I recommended in my post on your community post, give "Son of a Serpent" (live: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ioLae4edlpyfmKc ) a try. It is more "proggy" than "Mr. Invisible", I think you'll dig it.

Crazy how this has so many less views compared to Nightwish but this is IMO a far superior song. Given its a totally different genre, its just more my style. I get its not for most people. Whatever. I like it

Joe hawley gaming oddly enough wikipedia lists a keyboard player from 2009-2010 that was in the band but I can’t find any other reference of the dude. They use synths and for the synth sound in the intro is an EWI
