The Spoken Word: “A Virtue for Every Season of Life”
By: Lloyd Newell
Isn’t it interesting that sometimes those who have the least are the most grateful, and yet there are others who seem to have everything-except gratitude? As religious leader Henry B. Eyring observed: “We so easily forget that we came into life with nothing. Whatever we get soon seems our natural right, not a gift. And we forget the giver. Then our gaze shifts from what we have been given to what we don’t have yet.”
Gratitude-for life, for blessings, for the Giver of this beautiful world and everything in it-is a timeless and timely virtue. People like to be around grateful people. They like to help grateful people. They don’t soon forget grateful people.
One woman fondly remembers an elderly friend named Dorothy, whom she visited to help her with some tasks that age had made difficult. After each little act of service, Dorothy would say, “Do you know how grateful I am?” During the visit, the power went out, and when Dorothy looked out the window and saw the workers restoring her power, she said, “I hope they know how grateful I am.” When it was time for Dorothy’s friend to leave, she whispered the prayer she learned from Dorothy: “Do you know how grateful I am?”
It’s worth pondering-do others know how grateful you are? Better yet, do you know? Many express their thanks in gratitude journals, counting their blessings as they respond to the prompt “How did God bless me today?”
“If you do that long enough and with faith,” Henry B. Eyring taught, “you will find yourself remembering blessings. And sometimes, you will have gifts brought to your mind which you failed to notice during the day, but which you will then know were a touch of God’s hand in your life.” And think of the joy your family will someday feel as they look at this record of thankfulness.
So many other virtues we seek flow from gratitude. Without gratitude, we become self-focused and insecure, wondering if someone somewhere has more or better. Gratitude, on the other hand, opens our hearts to God and to others. It blesses us in seasons of scarcity and seasons of plenty. Indeed, gratitude is a virtue for every season of life.

I find myself looking for many things to be greatful for. On days when I feel tired, not useful, and like there is nothing I can do, I say a "thankful" prayer. These prayers make me feel more "human" and give me hope for a better day. I am greatful for my Father in Heaven and for my Savior. I am so greatful I chose to come to Earth. Try being more thankful when you're not having a good day. It works!

Just found this particular program today..was unable to find it sooner on KZbin. Beautiful music as always, and the message helped to reinforce an "attitude of gratitude" I've been striving to cultivate. One of the most important parts of that I've learned though, is to be sure to let others know how greatful we are for them and for even the smallest things in our lives.🌼🦋🤗🙏

With all the tumult and confusion all around us, stopping to show gratitude can make the difference between despair and hope. I am thankful for the Gospel, dear friends and family far and near, and for that light that fills and calms the heart. Happy Thanksgiving.

Wishing you a wonderful thanksgiving. I’m losing, HOPE! Im facing trials and tribulations! I’m discouraged! I lost my job over not wanting the vaccine due to my pre existing health conditions (lupus) I’m a single mother with two children both are autistic. Im so ashamed I can’t even afford Thanksgiving dinner this year. I have no family or friends that may help me. I feel all alone. Facing homelessness next month, but keeping faith! In GOD!

I am in England, but I hear your cry! Go to the Mormons. Or the Salvation Army. Don 't stay like this. Get help whatever way you can. You owe it to yourself and your children. Don't give up. Cry out to God. I know, I've been in a similar situation. In the end I had to ditch any vestige of pride or self reliance that I had left. I was at my end. That was when help came.

When will we ever hear the full glory of the pipe organ? I'd love to hear the 32' Reed please! Surely at the end of a grand anthem or hymn. I often feel the organ playing is on the reserved side of things however accurate it may be!
