Actually, following the cosmic cube he attained the infinity gems which were called soul stones at the time, all of them bar Adam Warlock's one, which he was siphoning off the energies to while he was near, to power his artificial stone he built to house the energies. At this point Thanos did not know about their true power though, in fact I'm not sure anyone did before him. He killed Warlock but was defeated by a combination of the Avengers and a partially resurrected Warlock
