I made the exact same thing with react, instead of addEvent listener I used useRef. I was having problem with iterating over the array. I did everything as you did and in the end what solved the error was , I made the initial index = 0 of the array variable as global. That fixed the issue.

use map and also when your using useRef() don't forget to use null as parameter to make to work like dom example: myref = useRef(null);
