This is a really good song, it's talking about a guy that's just excited to go to heaven, and not acknowledging what's around him. He's doing all these things because he wants to go to heaven, not because he meant it. You can hear him saying "I go to church on sunday, truly, usually more". He expected that doing good stuff would end up with himself being in heaven but you have to be genuinely kind and doing those goods for others to end up in heaven. Charlie only went to church and got his wife gifts to go to heaven, not because he loved his wife. Him saying " Catch you later, i'm off to see the man up the stairs" is basically explaining that he wasn't kind in the first place. And at the end, you can hear him saying "I don't want to die" which means he wanted to die because he expected to go to heaven, but now that he's realized it, he doesn't want to die anymore because he knows he's not gonna see the pearly gates.

I think it's because He didn't do all that because he was kind, but because he wanted to go to heaven. Do the good things out the kind of your heart, stop thinking of what awaits you at the end, you will get there when you have to, meanwhile, live your life the way you want to, not the way you thinks it's right to.
