Abandoned by his father at an early age, Jim MacLaine (David Essex) seems to have inherited the old man's restlessness. Despite his apparent intelligence, Jim decides not to take the exams that would pave his way to university. He lives, for a time, a life consisting of dead-end jobs and meaningless sex, before returning home to work in his mother's shop. But still he can't settle down. As a man of 71 now..I look back and wonder how I survived working on the fairground..a great experience travelling around...and the girls..in some towns the guys were like celebrities..I suppose it was because we were seen as bad boys..and as a girlfriend once told me years later..we still chat on messenger..she was attracted to bad boys. I have to laugh..if you could see this bad boy now..71, a bit of a pouch..shaved head, I was going bald, and glasses..in fect a pensioner..to see Ringo and David..brings back personal memories. What it doesn't show you why we always looked grubby..hardly a break and hard work. Working the rides was the fun part. I have lain under a wagon..in a pool of freezing water..in winter..uncpupling a trailor..not so glorious a life, but we had our fun as well. I was 17 and working in a foundry..after a shift..all night..I looked like a ghost. Working nights meant no fun with my mates at weekends. I also lived with very strict dad..mum was OK. I would give him my wages..and got 10 Bob back. 10 Bob for a weeks work on nights. What did I do..I buggered off and took the the road..the fairground kame later. Now I like overseas in my own house with a nice bit of land in the countryside near a lake, mountains etc. who knew this bad boy would do OK ? 😉😀

there is a Billy Fury Way , off West End Lane in West Hampstead in London, opposite West Hampstead Overground station. some people make the effort to ensure he is remembered. nice one Camden Council.

Even though I was only 5 in 1959, this film resonates with me on many levels, so very strongly and for many reasons. I've always thought it to be one of the very best films ever made. It is so acutely atmospheric and completely sums up the feeling of the late 1950s.

This is one of the most realistic movies depicting my youth. I even walked away from a military career and bought a guitar.

I knew I was getting old when my 16 year old daughter brought her boyfriend to meet daddy..mistake. When I saw the lad he had long hair..a leather jacket with studs..tight Jean's and boots..oh, and an earring. I saw me when I worked on the fairground and it bothered me..so the first words out of my mouth were..If you hurt me daughter..I will hunt you down..there will be nowhere you can hide. First words out of my daughters mouth were..Daaaad..stop it.

I seriously cannot believe i have never seen this film. My parents had the compliation double lp album to this whilst growing up during the 80's & 90's, but i never really took enough notice that it was a film and only thought it was a simple compilation of 50's/60's artists. I have always loved the music from the 1960's & 70's...Infact i became obsessed with collecting records because of my love for record players from the era. Record players were my toys, although not toys. Its obvious who the drawings are of on the compilation album, that of david essex & ringo star, but for some strange reason this never all that much registered with me as i hardley paid too much attention, likely because i was never really all that keen on 50's rock n roll music as i very much prefered the artists from the mid to late 60's and all of the 70's hippie & soul stuff. A few days ago i was thinking what some of the very first records were that i bought in my early teens, and one of them was the stardust soundtrack compilation that i picked up from the car boot sale in the 1990's about 4 years before i got serious with collecting and looking after them. Anyway with the help of the well known internet auction site, i decided to buy this again. So, as the stardust album was released on ronco records, it instanly reminded me that the that'll be the day album was very similar as i remembered the labels were the same. Thats when it came closer to my attention. Thank you mum & dad. Wish mum or dad would of tould me when they were here. Perhaps they did, but i'd forgot. Very highly likely. I remember watching the stardust film being repeated in mid 90's.

The troubles with the director sound typical of the British films of this period. You had a generation of directors and writers who had absoloutely nothing in comon and no understanding of the generation going to the cinema, Whereas in the States, they had the sex and drugs and easy rider generation of directors.

The generational difference is important. This is why I can't understand older men going with a much younger woman..they have nothing in common. Do you you remember D Day love..no, I wasn't born then. Lol. I know why they go with a younger woman..and it's not because of the love of poetry...that's why they invented viagra. 😉😀

Terrible movie. Especially by todays moral standards. Especially Essex forcing himself on a young girl on grassy Hill with fairground as a backdrop.

He's not meant to be an admirable character. It was brave of Essex to take such an unsympathetic role. It foregrounds his ruthlessness later in his rock career.
