That was me. I wanted to be just like Ward. I met my wonderful bride almost the same way. She was stunning. I admired her from across the room and I knew she was the One. We met through the help of a friend and I began to get her use to having me around. I popped the question and she said YES immediately. We had to wait 2 years, but then we were married. I wanted what Ward had. A wife, a house and a couple of kids. A job where I could support them and come home to them every night. We had two children, a boy and a girl. This October, we will celebrate 40 years of blissful marriage. I'm not exactly Ward Cleaver, but I got no complaints.

How many times did I hear Dad's gonna kill us! line. Ward Never even threatened a spanking and I don't recall him raising his voice. ..... Hind sight... Hugh Beaumount being a minister (for real) surely carried over to the show. his demeanor showed through beautifully. (the term escapes me now (when using a prop) anyway The simplest thing I saw Barbara B. do (and often) when she picked up the phone ... was listened for the dialtone first and then dial. yep those were the days!🙂

Maria Riva, daughter of Marlene Dietrich, said her mother got the clap from soldiers while hostessing there during WW2. Raquel Welch said, when asked about her experience entertaining in Vietnam, that the soldiers would have preferred prostitutes. I think we (people in general) romanticize about war, which is, by nature, harsh.
@shettrick2 жыл бұрын
Well, you have cited (third/fourth-hand) two of the millions of interactions and experiences at USOs. I have no doubt there were some bad experiences and surely many of the young men were looking to pick up women just as young women were looking to find a man. I think we (people in general) also tend to make assumptions that something negative we read or hear is the truth in most cases, when that may only be the exception or not the norm.
@akrenwinkle2 жыл бұрын
@@shettrick Maria's information was second-hand; her mother told her. Raquel's experience was first-hand; she was there. Regarding norms, it was certainly normal behavior for Marlene, unless a lot of people are lying, including her daughter. It is certainly normal for straight men to want more than a ballroom dance from beautiful women. I didn't exactly make a judgment about what's negative; you did.
@shettrick2 жыл бұрын
@@akrenwinkleOK, your first example is someone named Maria - if you heard it in person directly from her, who heard it from her mother, that sounds like third-hand to me. OK, my bad, I've always known the clap to be a negative thing, but I guess you're saying it wasn't a bad thing for Maria's mom - happy to hear that.
@akrenwinkle2 жыл бұрын
@@shettrick No, not Maria, the cashier at RiteAid. My first words were "Maria Riva, daughter of Marlene Dietrich." I had a feeling, seeing your age, photo, sentimentalism, and the same feelings about Tony Dow that I've had for decades, that you knew who Dietrich was, both as a gay icon and WW2 historical figure. I liked the USO story, and so added a little about entertaining the troops. Maybe I shouldn't have. I don't intentionally give anyone the vapors. I don't lie either.

Consider this my comment for that video since you have them turned off there. Also, what a cool flashback sequence this is, fanciful though it may be. It's so much FUN!! The little touches are perfect too, like the Glen Miller take on the LITB themesong, and how he's gleefully whistling it as he walks to June's door! I vaguely remember one or two of these scenes from my original viewing of TNLITB, but they stand really well on their own. Great stuff!!

Eddie comments that he doesn't really like the girl he's taking out that much, but that her father is really big in the construction business and that could help him when he's starting a career.
