VHEISSU is their best album. You absolutely must listen. Between artist and alchemy. Its the real pivot in their sound.

I also got to see them from warped tour back barely post Y2K when they still played Ultra Blue from Identity Crisis and Beltsville Crucible from Illusion Of Safety. I know saying Vheissu is the best is gonna draw ire and opinions, but my statement is just that.....Opinion. that album wasthe departure they needed to make, and was absolutely crushing live. As far as alchemy, it was some amazing music, but i was way too into Mastodon's finale of an elemental concept album progression. That and Mastodon was playing way more and with more bands i was gravitating towards. So there's that. Cheers to all Music Nerds! 🍻 🤓 🤘

Saw them at the 20 year anniversary concert for this album late last year and got a “paper tigers” shirt. Amazing band

Great analysis! I'll add that the arpeggios was the bass guitar. Also the outro is the same synth patch from the chorus so it doesn't sound completely out of place to my ears but definitely a different vibe for sure.

Beggars is a great album as well, not nearly as heavy but demonstrating the incredible versatility this band has.

Great review! Thrice is my all time favorite, especially this era of them. I remember hearing a snippet from this song before the release when I was a freshman in highschool and thought it was the "hardest" thing I've ever heard LOL.

Thrice was of those bands that would hear but never got into, although from what I remember they did have a nice blend of sound. Their track "Treading Paper" is absolutely amazing. The vocals and lyrics just hit really hard. \m/

That was bass not synth in the middle there. Unless you meant the random noises in there. But a lot of that was guitar scratching and feedback too.

It’s an odd listen. They definitely sound older, with less energy to spare on the re-recording, which I’m not sure suits the songs but there’s still value in hearing the transformation.

15:38 yeah, i noticed that as well, which is even more interesting since you pefer to listen to albums, not songs, so assumption would be that it would be less meaningful to you where one song ends and the other starts

Yeah, for me it's not that important. And I don't think I've ever really given it any thought until recently since I've been listening to single tracks rather than albums in a majority of my listening (due to reacting) so stuff like that stands out a bit more than it ever did to me before.

And Island Records continues to botch this on vinyl. First off, for no reason they made this sub 40 minutes record a double album. Then paper tigers ends disc one abruptly, then disc two stars just as abruptly with Hoods on Peregrine.

Lol, they hadn't even made their best album yet or most of their best songs. They couldn't even for some of their best songs onto Viheissu, and they had to go on the bside. They haven't made an album that wasn't decent. Their albums definitely aren't as consistent after Vihessu, but they all have great songs and none of the songs are bad. They didn't burn out they just kept evolving, and not everyone evolved with them. We ask have our time in which everything's seamed to have been better and when a band like thrice has so many albums over such a long time there are going to be albums that you appreciate more.

Last decent album they made, in my opinion. They were like an inferno that exploded with their best work then quickly burned out with each subsequent release.
