@@laramyholman7190 Yes, it hurts to be around a person like this, but "suffer" is just not the correct word to use. Okalo is saying you can't just be there for someone with this level of depression and that it takes an often unexpected level of willingness and endurance. But saying a depressed person's friends are "suffering" is a poor choice of words.

Man it is really hard going through this honestly. Even if you have friends that listen you, you still feel disconnected, and after a certain point people get tired from this. I ended up putting my happy face on because being alone and depressed is alot harder. If you have a friend that goes through this please be understanding and know this is a thing that can take some time. Tough love is sometimes necessary, but only to certain point.

Nah I don’t agree people leaving you because your depressed and want to speak about it isn’t tough love if anything that’s a weak person that don’t want to deal with you. I had many people leave my life and I’m in a better position now because they wasn’t trying to help me they was just trying to keep from being like me and honestly that was their decision but I wouldn’t never do anyone like that but to each it’s own.

Yeah it’s tough but I’ve also realized we’re all so limited in our capacity so I don’t turn to my friends frequently for this as I have clinical depression that has been ongoing for many years. I mostly lean on therapy and peer support groups for day to day. Because at the end of the day it’s not your friends responsibility to help you through your health issues, if they do that’s great but it’s our own responsibility and sometimes professional help is really what’s needed/spaces that are focused on mental health support.

Lol yeah that's the truth, but that's also sad because you truly can't talk to anyone even if you're speaking facts about certain things. If you go along with the majority, pretend to be dumb and lose your morals, then you'll likely gain alot of others around you.. but at what cost? Not to mention you'll be trapped into conforming only to what the majority wants you to do, say, and think until the day you die. That's why if i ever ask my bestfriend or a loved one a deep question like : "You ever think about what's going to happen to you as a being after you die?" If they reply with "Nope I never thought about that" then I'll just be like " wow... that's tuff" and keep it moving.

@@spongebob8445 You know what you're saying is quite interesting, and I think that EVERYONE gets such existential questions crossing their minds, it being the constant thoughts of death, how death can play out and essentially what happens after it. The thing is most people in todays day and age would rather choose to drown such thoughts with either a life of hedonism and self-indulgence or coercing themselves to a life of mediocrity and conformity to the societal norms of a post-modernist world, a world that renunciates morality and "critical-thinking" in the boundary of morality. Such a life is, without doubt, meaningless, and when you start questioning this life that so many lead, you're branded as "Weird" , only because you're introducing a narrative that could destabilize them by divulging their meaninglessness.

I seem to keep making friends with depressed people and I wish they too could see the world this way. It's got to be tiring being tired and depressed all the time and nothing will change if you don't do anything different. You can't expect tomorrow to be better if you don't make it better, no matter if your brain wants you to stay put and do nothing else. Even if everything around you isn't going great, find enjoyment in small things. Take a walk and think about a funny meme or KZbin video. Find music that's more upbeat and dance like no one is watching when in your bedroom (or just nod along to the beat). Know that you deserve happiness and that your happiness might not be something big like what people share online, but it's still something that makes you happy (the smell of snow in the air makes me happy and I personally like cloudy days. Those who disagree with me, make your phone and computer wallpapers something sunny and bright and write a list of things you're going to do when spring and summer arrives). Just...don't be idle with your thoughts for too long. Bouts of sadness is one thing, but chronic depression is going to take more effort to break from. All of this is alongside perhaps medication or therapy.

There’s another side to this that I don’t think people are fully paying attention attention to. You see how bro hit the peace sign and left. That part is honest as hell. Not every one wants to deal with someone who is constantly in a mood like this, and that’s okay. You can’t expect everyone to just be there all the time because the reality is that life is gonna go on.

Even when I ask when such events happened and they tell me my mind cannot process it. I'm not sure what happened but for some reason me being able to link up the times at which the events happened simply is not possible all because I was depressed and that is why it drives me mad to think about it because I just wanted to make sense of it all I want to understand what happened and why I was the way I was but if I cannot remember the times at which things happened i cannot sort it out therefore it is a jumbled mess of misery.

@@sylviasimpson383 I’ve dealt with depression often. In my case antidepressants only worked in the beginning. After that not even increasing the amount would help. I did a lot of research and found out a very large portion of our serotonin is made in the gut. I began taking a probiotic with mood enhancement as well as other supplements that deal with increasing both serotonin and dopamine and it’s helped me tremendously. I encourage you to research the gut and brain connection. Talk to your doctor if you decide to take a supplement that increases either chemical though. I am a Christian also and Philippians 4:6-7 has been a life saver for me.

I would recommend Ephesians 6 as it talks about wearing the armor of God. I would recommend psalms 91 for protection and trust. And my personal favorite Zephaniah three verse 17. I love this verse because I didn’t know that God sings. So so cool to me and it really shows His tenderness.

So I watched this video twice because it hit a little too close to home for me. And here's my honest assessment 1. Niles is AN AMAZING WRITER!! like wow grade A content 2. On the topic at hand which is depression, I think Niles nailed it. See he talks about no point in being alive as dreams dont come true, life being meaningless, loneliness and lack of support, and lack of love. To be honest existential dread and nihilism are grounded imo to the feeling of your life's purpose either escaping you or you not even knowing what it is. These things can leave you lost for identity, questioning all of reality, because without purpose we don't know what to live for, leading to the dark void of emptiness or 'nothingness' Niles talks about in the beginning. Because of this, and inadvertent comparisons we make to others lives going so great, its a miserable prison, that can make you lose hope and faith in everything ranging from personal values to belief systems (which is why he asked so desperately"why did God even make us?")and most importantly if you don't know what to live for, death easily becomes an overarching concept in your life. Another thing Niles gets right is that especially for men, sharing this confusion and personal turmoil is hard, as we've been conditioned to view chaos in our lives as weakness, so we're ashamed and hide, so when Niles said "people been calling you and you're not picking" I felt that. Deep down he wants to cry out, but in society there's a certain shame in sharing(real men don'tcry), so he'd rather suffer with it alone. Hence the consolations of "I've learned I have to go through it alone". Which is wild because it amplifies the feeling of loneliness, and the unbridled rage when he thinks about his 'so called friends' who don't even ask how he is, yet he doesn't want to talk to them, perpetuating his internal despair, and anger towards them even when infact he is pushing them away. The pigmelion effect (a self fulfilling prophecy). Lastly all that culminates in the profound sadness of not feeling loved. Even if it may not be true, he doesn't want to believe that a person who is loved can go through all the pain alone. Which is why he cries out "I have no support systems " because everyone knows instinctively that it's easier to get through tough times with help, and those who help tend to be those who love us, so without help, it means he's not loved. Damn. 3. Niles actually represented the friends reaction quite naturally. Typically this augmented reality a person going through depression is experiencing is limited to their mind. So A friend unaware of another's suffering or internal turmoil can only react with shock, fear, confusion, and when overwhelmed naturally reacts by leaving because, sadly enough he's been convinced by the depressed friend that he's basically worthless as a support system and not a good friend, and any response won't be appreciated at all. Sad really because friends need to be able to look past that Superficial rage, and dive deep into the heart of why someone's depressed. But in the face of all this new knowledge, accusation, negativity, angst, we get stressed, and the natural response is fight or flight, and in this context fight is stay and help, despite all that's been said, while flight which is much easier dictates we just leave. Both are equally justifiable. Which is why the qtn. "Are you still seeing your therapist" got me good. This man really cares but just can't fight like that. 4. The "oh naw, when did you start singing?" Sent me rolling 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 5.I loved this video. Made me remember that good literature is basically an authors ability to make you feel a certain way. Niles is GOING PLACES!!!

some people need medication. Not everything is as cut as rocks. Some people have low serotonin in their brains that causes the brain to produce less of the chemicals to make people feel something such as "happiness". People belive in stuff like alzheimer's disease, a disease that affects the synpases inside your brain when neurons release an over-abundance of the peptide amyloid-beta. So my point is, if people can acknowledge AD which affects your brain, and people try to get their love ones medicated for it. Why be so afraid of trying to get SSRI's? something that is tangible in trying to improve your mood, will power isn't a unlimited source..

Everybody is talking about he’s listening to his friend vent. I think a lot of people forget the point about why their “sad and negative” some people go through severe childhood trauma, move on experience numerous deaths of loved ones, then go through the emotional rollercoaster of not understanding these things, & feeling alone even when surrounded by so many people.. because most of the time the people they put their faith in betray them in order to gain social status or just because there egotistical narcissists. Never forget that some people are going through some very deep stuff mentally, and although you may not have experienced it, don’t become ignorant in your misunderstanding, in my own personal opinion most people just need somebody to believe in them 100% that feeling alone feeling is what gets you into very irrational thinking patterns. Which ultimately lead to more and more problems. If you can do anything just believe in somebody & watch them change.. for the better.
