okay so the piano in my school’s choir room has a “banned songs” list that’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like. if you play one of the banned songs, you lose piano-playing privileges for the entire year. its all in good fun, but they still take it pretty seriously. the songs are all banned bc theyre annoyingly popular - ode to joy, the phantom of the opera, and yes, heart and soul. but now i kind of realllly wanna learn that little bridge part that no ones heard before and play it. i dont think anyone would even notice, and then i would get to be the person who found a loophole in the banned songs list ;)

Ooooh I know this one! So it’s largely because of the time period the song was written in. It was that weird transition from jazz to early rock in like the 40s and 50s, and a LOT of Christmas classics were written during that time period. White Christmas is the big one, but with frank Sinatra and the like around it was all fair game. And after that most people saw it as Christmas music, so people followed along because it sold songs. So now here we are and this sounds like Christmas music because that’s the only part of the style that is still in the limelight. Thank you for coming to my illegal TED talk. I’ll probably edit this to make more sense tomorrow.

Thank you for bringing this song back! Music educators worked for years to snuff this song and others, as this was one of those songs that everyone tried on the school pianos. Although it shortened the life of many a school piano, it resulted in kids taking piano lessons and being interested in music. When music ed disappeared them and the pianos too, students lost interest.

Wait music educators want to get rid of American standards? Or you mean they just did not teach them after they ceased to exist in many places after budget cuts?
@katharinabecker752 Жыл бұрын
@@jamespaganas7150 Many music educators got tired of this tune after hearing many many generations of students bang out this an other songs on school pianos. This song was accessible as you did not need piano lessons to figure it out. This rough and enthusiastic handling of school pianos did not lengthen the useful life of the piano and in budget crunch times educators limited the access to the instruments to preserve them And (gave educators the perk of never having to hear the Flea Waltz, Heart and Soul, and Chopsticks...a three song repertoire for self-taught pianists, again. The budget cuts /program elimination, loss of access and the loss of tolerance has contributed to the lack of interest.
