That’s right, double uploads, we out here Maybe triple if you like and sub 👀 Little note, As you can see some of the footage looks better than others, no HUD, smoother fps, just better gameplay in general. Long story short, my GPU got fried while making the vid, luckily I had enough footage to be creative with, but nonetheless, it’s not ideal, sorry for that.

An exploring beat 'em up with cool combos performed by the Knuckster sounds like a banger game that would fit more with the character attatched rather than sticking it to Sonic cause Sonic Team doesn't want to make anymore spinoffs.

Your editing is great! Also appreciate the JSR music. Also YES, I've been waiting for someone to talk about the lives and ranking system for so fucking long! A “tries” system where you can upgrade the amount of times by exploring and collecting (in the gaia gate extra rooms you can increase the number of lives on a stage) is such a great idea I still don't know why it was never used again. Also the idea of collectables unlocking music and concept art that was barely used as well in Sonic games

Finally, someone who gets it! Unleashed Wii/PS2 always gets casted in these sorts of videos as inferior to the HD version and not worth talking much about, so thank you for giving it the praise it deserves. I feel like Unwiished's Day stage gameplay is the most complete package of any boost game, where every element is in harmony with the other elements (I'm going to repeat some of your points from the video to make my case): - Ranks are determined solely by how fast you complete the level, making it crystal clear what it'll take to get the 3 medals (and it even shows what the target time is during the level!) - Beating levels fast means you need to prioritize filling the boost gauge, which you do by not only collecting rings, but by chaining together actions, giving you a reason to actually interact with the level and destroy enemies - Rings also increase the gauge's size, and getting hurt only reduces your gauge level by 1 (and, critically, reduces your ring count, not setting it to zero), making the punishment for less than stellar play a worse time instead of probable death - The boost has setbacks, so you have to use it strategically instead of holding down a button for the entire stage - Having the boost gauge use chunks simplifies boost gauge management and helps with the strategic element - Levels are designed for speed, doing away with most of the precision platforming that most of the other boost games feel the need to use even though the controls aren't designed for precision (not to mention those segments are usually the worst parts of those levels) - Collectibles in the levels are optional, and they're almost always placed on an alternate path that you would consider using to finish the level faster, which makes collecting interesting instead of tedious, and encourages players to try different routes while still trying to beat the level quickly I could go on, but I've rambled long enough. It's a little disappointing that Sonic Team decided to use the HD version as the boost blueprint in future games, when I feel like using Unwiished's system would've made for better, longer (while being less padded) games.

Watching this video reminded me how much I love Wii Unleashed. God the visuals, while a little uglier, are still gorgeous, and that crust it has adds to that "Old 2000's" feeling the game has. Makes you feel like you're exploring a world from years ago and I love it. And it's crazy to think that they not only made a SECOND COMPLETELY different game from the other Unleashed with the same name, but its competent too. Even if it looks worse, gameplay-wise it's got so much going for it.

I grew up in the Wii version and even after playing the others I still prefer that one. One of my favorite small details about it was that could actually go inside the Gaia temples. I would just sit there taking in the sights and listening to the song that played in them, it was like magic to me. There was also the fact that you didn’t need to go looking for the sun and moon medals, you got them just by playing the levels which was much less of a hassle

I miss the temples. I was so bummed when I found out that the other version(that I didn’t have) allowed you to walk around the towns and talk to people(since I was a pretty big fan of that sort of thing back in the adventure days) so the temples were like my bread and butter. I spent a lot of time in there… sometimes I wouldn’t even be working on a puzzle, I’d just be… I don’t know… doing nothing but goofing around basically 🤷♀️
@artistanthony10072 жыл бұрын
Those Gaia Temples are practically a Hub World on their own so that was kind of the reason Sonic Team had to make compromises and not add HD's Hub Worlds AND Empire City in SD, it was a limitation thing.

You know, I didn't mind the werehog, it's very reminiscent of the God of War style, where you're not speeding through, you're taking the time to rack up combos on enemies and find the collectibles. Also, especially in the PS2 and Wii version, you level up in the same manner as well. So, if anything, they could have went the full mile and made a spin off where everything was werehog gameplay. I would have been happy with that. Hell, I'm sure Sega could have tried to hook up with Santa Monica Studios to make an well versed combat styled spin off.

8:01 I related to that so much! 😭 As a kid this happened to me like 5 times in a row and I was like “WTF IS THE POINT OF HAVING THE DAMN BOOST THEN!??!!” 😂 One thing I did like about this game, was that the boost actually felt fast. Maybe it’s just me, but the boost in other sonic games doesn’t really feel as fast to me If you’re going to call it a boost and even have the music get muffled every time I use it, I’m expecting something extreme, but really, sometimes it just feels like that’s how fast he’s supposed to be going in the first place Maybe I’m imagining things though I wonder if it has to do with the legs/feet maybe?? Maybe if I saw a side by side comparison of how Sonics legs move in games with the boost formula, vs something like adventure(I was watching knuckles run the other day and was like damn :O) or even just a comparison of how fast he’s actually passing buildings/distance and stuff in THIS game vs other boost formula games.. maybe those things have something to do with whether or not it actually feels like he’s going fast

I ended up buying the PS2 version on Christmas and I had the best Christmas vacation of my life. This game is filled with little details everywhere and the Werehog levels have some of the best platforming I have seen in this franchise. The fixed lives system is a God send and rewards you for being good at the game, as you need medals to unlock new lives through the Gaia Gates. Sonic's boost is both a super power and a curse, depending on the time you use it, and once you master the controls, you become unstoppable. It's honestly really heartwarming seeing Unleashed and Unwiished enjoyers out there on the internet, since the game was hated when it came out. Very enjoyable video, keep up the good work 🖤.

Two videos back to back from yourself, what is this Christmas! *checks the calendar* Oh snap! Never played the SD version of Unleashed, but I did hear it was quite different with how it handled boost, being more quick bursts of speed, compared hold that button down and go! go! go! Also on a side note, I just noticed the exp crystals you pick up from enemies, as the Werehog, are very similar to that of the crystals you get from one of Sonic Team's other not Sonic games, Burning Rangers, after you put out a fire. I wonder if that an old idea carried over. Albeit there they worked both like rings that powered your shield, and you'd drop them all upon taking damage, and to transport people you'd find in the stages to safety.

i first played unwiished as well, only getting to play unleahsed hd very very recently, and if it werent for the tutorial stages id still be playing SD a lot. ive always liked how SD's boost is segmented, it forces you to choose WHEN to use it, instead of making you hold the X/Square button till your thumb goes numb. about medals: i never had a problem with them in hd version actually. finding them was fun, collecting them didnt feel like a chore but just a thing i did in the game naturally, finding them in day stages feels like i found an easter egg and got rewarded for it, so i play it once normally, then repeat it for a higher rank while finding best route and collecting all medals (not so much now that i can get S rank first try, but at first it was like that). about werehog: its awesome, idc. its fun, its relaxing, the music is really good (but as much as i love the battle theme i really wish i could turn it off sometimes cause man, empire city night? hooooo boy is that jammin... i really liked how SD handled lives and gaia gates, kinda wish those were in hd as well. but you know what i wish was in sd that was in hd? QTEs. those like in hd. X B RB Y Y type thing you know, not just A or B thats it have fun, might as well remove them entirely tbh. also about sonic handling like a car: thats somewhat a thing in hd as well but ONLY WHEN DRIFTING, you dont wanna accelerate when turning corners, you wanna slow down (as in you dont wanna boost when drifting) if you wanna make the turn, but other than that in sd it was a BIT annoying sometimes cause of the camera, it was often hard to guess if im facing the right direction to boost in. it would be cool if unleashed ultimate had wii version in it as well (ofc without the overly long tutorial, and maybe few other tweaks that dont include graphic tweaks cause i assume those would be a no brainer (like for example adding towns, maybe on a smaller scale, idk))

I genuinely love Unwiished, it's my absolute favorite iteration of the 3D boost system. Combine that with Unleashed's amazing level themeing and killer soundtrack, and it's my favorite boost era sonic game. And the Werehog levels are more about exploring the rich environments and getting a real sense of the cultures at a slower pace, really helps you appreciate the themeing. I don't like how he has three speeds though, or like how he hesitates before going into his run. You're better off just dashing every chance you get anyway. This last time I played it, I was expecting to hate the werehog segments, but I actually found the variation quite enjoyable. There's still more levels than I would like, but it's not such a big deal.

Take the werehog gameplay & treasure hunting stages, blend them together, then make exploration-based levels where you collect treasure and fight enemies while reaching the goal would be awesome for a Knuckles game. They don't have to be fast or slow, you explore and take them at your leisure. The closest thing I can compare that to would probably be... Luigi's Mansion 2? That sounds like a super weird comparison but it's still a more level based game with a ranking system alongside exploration, collecting, and combat. Heck, replace the combat with stealth elements and you have a standalone evolution of Rouge's gameplay. You could probably even use the werehog gameplay as a base for Amy. (Case in point: We need more games with alternate gameplay styles & Sonic's friends. And standalone games for just one or more of Sonic's friends.)

you know. i played a good bit of colors and generations and always felt like the boost gameplay was a little off. at least coming from someone who only played this version of unleashed. i really appreciate you illumining why this might have been the case.

I owned this version first and had a lot of fun with it, even though the HD version is better, the Wii/Ps2 version is pretty decent.

Hi! Unleashed speedrunner (and would say an expert on the game) I LOVE this review!!!! Probably my favorite one I’ve seen (and boy are there a lot). Your editing is ABSURD!!!! Definitely subbing for the other content. However, I think your content is ON POINT. I always say that unwiished is more a racing game than a platformer and I’m so glad someone else has seen it. Great content!

YO I PLAYED THE WII VERSION THAT CRAP BANGED BRUH. I'm really enjopying the fact you love unleashed so much and bring it up in a lot of your videos. cue *Ah you're a man of culture* memes. That being said, the XBOX version looks all shiny and cool, but I loved this game just as much on the Wii and will never forget the time I had with it. To this day I still believe Jason Griffith had the best voice for sonic, and that's because I grew up watching SOnic X and playing unleashed on Saturday mornings. And that music bangs like nothing else bro, I listen to those overworld songs on the daily. I'll end with saying I loved this video and all of your sonic videos have been really cool to watch, I can't wait to see what you make in the future when new sonic content roles around.

Every now and then, when I’m watching a KZbin video, I see something that just instantly makes me go right down to the like button, because it’d be criminal if I DIDNT like the video JUST for that. And this, 4:07, was one on of those moments.

Okay, first time viewer to the channel here, not only is the editing slick as hell and the jokes hilarious, but I think this is the first time I've listened to someone talk about this game and not felt insane because they either thought it was flawless or had no good points at all, Subscribed

There should be a Sonic Unleashed Ultimate that combines the PS3/Xbox version w assets of the Wii version.

Unleashed remake where you unlock this version as a 100% reward, since it didn't really have anything

@@ALtheBoi Lol, I was actually thinking about integrating the wii stages into an act 2 for the day and night stages, including the hub worlds for the Gaia temples. As for Collectables, I think instead of stages, the tokens can be used to unlock skins/costumes for Sonic.
