In this episode Daniel and Mick take a brief look at the venerable Line 6 DL4, before moving on to the delay revolution that it spawned.
It wasn’t so long ago that having more than one delay option on your board was for pros only. These days it’s absolutely commonplace, and the DL4 plays an important role in that evolution, offering a huge number delays in one pedal, with three at your feet.It changed everything for pedal-loving delay users all the way back at the turn of the century. Phenomenally popular, they still make ‘em.

Awesome video! Let's not forget Robert Fripp's contributions in the 70s with his Frippertronics reel-to-reel analog system. It definitely paved the way to the early 2000s looping movement & beyond.

I prefer my Strymon, because I love the analog dry path, but mark my words... 30 years from now MXR, after acquiring the Line 6 name, will be selling a DL4 preamp that muddies up the sound like that.

I think that's a fair prediction. Companies like MXR are always reissuing because people miss certain "sounds". The Line 6 xx4 series has a sound, and the DL4 is known for it. I'm with you thinking it will eventually be a desired sound.

Strymon seems like the best one of the bunch outside of the TC Nova pedal which sadly is no longer in production. The H9 is expensive and interface sucks unless you hook up an ipad. Might as well use ipad apps at that point for free!

I love that the Strymon lets your real sound come thru then adds modulation on top of it. That’s the key. As opposed to coloring your tone the minute you plug in.

For anyone interested, if you press in the selector knob on the timefactor, you can swap the delay time from being based on a tempo (choosing subdivisions) to being based on a time (selecting delay time in milliseconds). So in answer to Mick's question, no, they do not have to be sync'd.

I need help badly guys. I keep going in circles with all my effects because I cant be happy with my amp settings. A show on just getting a good foundation on the amp would help me build. Every tone you guys have is killer. I need to know were you start. How you set the guitars tone knobs before even beginning to dial in the pedals. Hell just a good recording of your preferred clean tones. I have at least learned how to set the break up point thanks to you guys but that might help out lots of guys. I have a Rivera 55-12 but a run down of each circuit (Fender,Plexi,Vox) would kick ass. I think I could get more flexibility from my pedals if I locked down a better base. Finding your clean tone 101 kinda thing. I know sound/tone is subjective but you guys know good tone and thats a fact we can all agree on. Btw you guys are great. That was deliberate ass kissing by the way ha.

Hey guys. Love your show! For a future episode, would you consider talking about how you'd choose a set of pedals for a particular amp? Maybe take a few different common amp models and talk about how the properties of the amps would lead you to choose pedals for them? You often hit on how certain pedals work better or worse with different amps, but it's usually in passing. Since many players only have a single amp to work with and have to build a pedal collection around that, I think this would be an interesting topic.

The eventide took me a long time to get used to programming and moving around. But after owning a timeline, dd500, dl4, And timefactor, I had to go with the timefactor. It is just SO customizable. All are amazing, but when I realized the possibilities with it, I had to force myself to learn it. The Barn3 external switches and an external tap make it a billion times easier to navigate.

Firstly, I don't know why you didn't pause at the start and then say "Sorry for the delay" - that would have brought the house down!! :) I used two DL4s on my board for years and swore I'd never leave it but then I found the Timeline (with the Disaster Area MIDI controller) and have not looked back. I agree when you say the DL4 has a sound (surprisingly warm for a digital pedal) but I think there's also a Strymon 'sound' too, although it's not affecting the original signal - neither of these are bad things though, it's good that pedals have character. It would be so exciting to have Jeorge Tripps on the show. Way Huge stuff is so underrated I think and he never really gets the limelight he deserves. In my opinion, the Saucy Box and the Green Rhino are two of the best overdrives to ever be produced that you can find in almost any store. Great video, big fan. Thanks lads!

Great episode guys. I've been anticipating this one for a while. The only thing I was surprised about was that you didn't include the Korg SDD3000. I know you can't include every delay out there and you were demonstrating how delay pedals have evolved. The SDD300 is quite unique and I personally think it fits into that evolutionary chain somewhere. I also know Dan gave it the thumbs up in his second Ed O'Brien video. If you can work it in to a future episode in some shape or form then that would be great please.

I LOVE my H9 Max. Steep learning curve, and I only use about 2% of what it's actually capable of, but it can do whatever I want it to do, both now and into the future as my sonic preferences change. I removed three pedals from my current board (tremolo, delay, chorus) because the h9 made them obsolete. I also compared it to the Timeline, and although the Timeline was an amazing delay pedal with many delay options, the H9 was an amazing delay with many other options that transcended the delay options in very high quality ways (I sense that other multi-effects processors are somewhat gimmicky, and cheesy in the overall quality). My only complaint is that it is so awesome that I would need to get another one (the Core) to fill in the gaps while the other one is in use, and it looks kind of ridiculous to have two of them on your board; although now that I own one I completely understand why that would be the case. It's like a supreme-quality chameleon pedal that can do whatever you want it to, but you're somewhat (there are logical, tasty exceptions) limited to one effect at a time. Highly recommended, and totally worth the extra cost if you consider how much you're saving in effects that can be replaced by the H9.

I was terribly skeptical about the timeline back in the days when i was to choose a new do-it-all delay, I thought that the eventide expertise in modulations would have literally killed the pedal market. Then I tried the strymon. Since 2010 i've never ever turned the timeline off. It's just the best delay pedal ever made.

The DL4 was mind blowing for its time and totally changed my style. The tube tape model became a huge part of my sound. Recently I sold it, and shed a small tear. Still, best sonic hack I’ve ever heard is to put a dummy plug into the unused output of the DL4. It normally sums the two sides together, and this results in that muddy phased out sound on the modulated models. With the dummy plug the unit no longer sums them and they sound much, much better.

On balance, I think labelling the H9 as difficult or unreliable is unfair. I bought a used one and needed to contact Eventide support to unlink it from the sellers account and tether it to mine before the setup was complete. That all happened within 24hrs and while it was a bit frustrating, I could still operate the pedal from the unit itself and I haven’t had any connectivity issues since. If deep menus put you off this kind of pedal (like me), the app is very visual and super easy to use, change settings, save and upload to the unit. The sounds are top tier too.

The problem with the DL-4 is that they always broke! My friend went through three of them in two years. Mostly switching problems.

Hey can you guys do something on the difference between boutique pedals and non boutique pedals to see if boutiques are really 'better'/worth it?

I mean I know the difference. I have a pretty good board with strymon and origin etc. But I have some friends who to them only see for example a delay for $100 and a delay that does the 'same' thing for $400 and don't see the point.

There's no such thing as a boutique digital delay! Come on, they aren't hand build like a boutique fuzz or overdrive...
@strazburg

i like pedals as much as the next bloke, but somtimes the "boutique is better" mentality can get very tone chaser, and you're paying alot of money for gear that isnt always worlds apart from other gear like you might think.

If you push the mode selector knob on the timefactor you can change to ms delay times and have the two delays "free floating" for some more spacy sounds. Also you were in bank mode when you tried to tap tempo. In bank mode the footswitches are preset one, preset two and bank up. Thats why pretty much every timefactor user has a little aux switch connected to have tap tempo, infinite repeats and bank down on 3 extra switches. :)

Dan: "I found this pedal (the TimeFactor) really confusing to use." Yes! I tried out the TimeFactor side-by-side with the TimeLine and found the latter so much more intuitive, so I bought it over the TimeFactor.

I don't understand why people still get the Factor-pedals when they could just get H9s instead. I'm a Timeline user myself and love it to bits, especially now that Nixie is out.

Massive fan of the videos! How about a video about a few smaller, independent British manufacturers? I've bought from a couple of smaller, one-man operations myself and always found the pedal selections quite interesting and unique. Might also be good for adding some new noise boxes to the shelves...

And "everything on" made Mick a one man Hawkwind. In all of the lovely stuff you've done on echoes and delays, you've never really touched on John Martyn. Many years AG, I did manage to produce a facsimile of his percussive self accompaniment with a friend's SimmsWatts EchoDek (never seem to be mentioned these days), but I've never managed it since :-(

Guys. Being an electronics engineer and having equipment to analyze pedals, I know how much difference the analog dry through can make. That said, the tone problems on the DL4 are because of exactly 6 components, and a super simple mod can make it sound soooooooooo much better. And I really wanted to see the Boss DS-500 in this video. I feel like including the Pigtronics and not the boss or the empress is obnoxious.

Love my Echolution2 Filter Pro! It truly sounds 3 dimensional even in mono. It has kicked some great delays off my board. However the software to edit the presets does not work with Windows 10. The folks at Pigtronics have said they are working on this and it should be out soon. Great show Mates!
