In this video Daniel and Mick take a look at three valve-driven overdriven pedal/preamps and ask why you may - or may not - want to use one. This is not a comparison of different valve overdrive pedals. Maybe we’ll do that another time, so let us know what pedals you might like to see. That might be part 2. For now, however…
The pedals we’re using today:
• Kingsley Jester (hear it first at 6:43)
kingsleyamplifi...
• BK Butler Tube Driver (hear it first at 8:40)
butleraudio.com/
• Dean Markley Overlord (modified - hear it first at 9:50)
Other interesting bits…
• The bonkers EQ on the Tube Driver 10:58
• Discussion about high- and low-headroom amps and how valve pedals interact with each at different compression levels: 13.32
• Mick doesn’t really mean ‘violining’ at 16:30. He just means how super smooth Eric Johnson’s sound is. He does know violining means volume swells, but his brain wasn’t connecting. Sorry about that.
• Comparison with Keeley-modded Boss BD-2 Blues Driver into the Hamstead: 17:20
• Using The Tube Driver with other pedals: 21.28
Mick is playing a PRS DGT model, Dan is playing a Nik Huber Krautster II.
Amps are a Fender Super Reverb with 4x10 Jensen alnico speakers and a Hamstead Artist 20+RT through a 1x12 Celestion Alnico Blue.
As always, all pedal and amp switching and routing is handled by TheGigRig G2.

Probably repeating myself, but one the coolest things about the Tube Driver in a live or on-the-fly recording situation is that not only are the volume an drive knobs located on the outside edges, they are also rubberized and with only a little practice they are super easy to nudge up and down. Fantastic if you need a boost or offed-up your unity-gain in soundcheck. More builders should take this into consideration.

I respect your opinion, so please respect mine. In Jan 2023 they still bumble about the real issue with their banter and their non verbal cues show how they really feel. In this video the tube pedals blow everything else out of the water. Watch this with the volume down and keep track of what they have on and their reactions. It is crystal clear.

Love the show. However, it seems to be primarily aimed at blues/rock guitarists and to focus on varying levels of overdrive and lead playing, and less on the rhythm guitarist playing a primarily clean tone in, say, a funk / R&B band (like me). I'd love to see a show focused on that sort of guitar rig, perhaps looking at wahs, compressors, clean boosts, amp choices etc. Thanks.

I have an ancient B.K. Butler. Its got to be over 30 years old now. It cost $179 back when I bought it (Steve's Music in Toronto). It lasted me through my Ampeg and Marshall JCM 800 phases, and its the perfect compliment to my Tele and Hot Rod DeVille. So expressive and responsive. So fragile. Its held together with silicone and nightly prayers, and I will be buried with that pedal. Edit: I generally have the amps running clean as a bell, with just a touch of growl when strumming barre chords (ala Jumping Jack Flash). The Tube Driver screams in that situation, but it really does not "metal".

I do the same thing, run it through a clean amp. Mines old also, but I've only had it 2 yrs now. It's the 3 knob Butler with a bias knob mod. I stack it with other drives for crazier sounds. Gain is only 9-11 o'clock on any of my drives. Meat and 3 modded Soul Food and a Alchemy modded Blues driver.

Tube OD pedals definitely accentuate the pick attack more - where as transistor ODs soften it a bit. Being both an owner of a Kingsley Minstrel (and Constable) and various trans pedals like the Nobels ODR-1, and Dover Drive, I would probably always choose the ODR-1 for pop oriented rhythm and fills, due to their ability to be in the background. The tubes just pop out, are more aggressive, and dynamic - and are really more useful for major solos, and Steve Cropper style lines. One isn’t better than the other, but definitely different.

Something important I learned from a Joe Perkins video earlier this morning: Valve overdrives pedals such as the BK Butler are NOT getting the drive sound from the valve at all, but rather from an Op amp clipping *before* the signal gets to the valve. The valve is only getting enough voltage to add some "tube warmth" (sag) to the signal. Apparently this is the case with any 9volt valve overdrive pedal, as 9 volts power is not enough to drive a 12Ax7 which are commonly used. There are pedals such as the Effectrode TD-2A which run three valves cascading into one another, and at high enough voltage to actually push the valves. This is actually a proper valve *preamp*, whereas something like the Butler is just an overdrive pedal. Effectrode does make a Fuzz pedal that gets it's sound from driving a tube, but it is apparently some kind of mini tube that can be driven by 9 volts.

I'm sorry, the above is internet misinformation; a rumor juicy enough to have spread! The tube/valve in various low voltage tube pedals are absolutely distorting! I really need to do a video to demonstrate this. Merlin Blencowe has some good plots on the internet of "starved plate" valve distortion circuits; might be worth a Google.

Let us not forget that after the Tube Driver, BK Butler came down from the mountain with the Ibanez Tube King. Ibanez proclaimed "let there be a tube drive for every man" and then it was so. In a boutique world, I really miss that pedal... a tube drive for the rest of us.

Behringer currently produce a clone of the Tube King which they call the Vintage Tube Monster. Unlike most of their pedals, this one is in a proper metal enclosure. It sounds awesome, but some people like upgrading the stock Bugera tube to something like a Sovtek 12AX7. It's worth a look if you're looking for a pedal of this style which is affordable & currently being produced.

Interesting Eric Johnson tidbit, from what I've read (and I'm a bit obsessed): he has the eq off into a cranked Marshall, but he sets the TD output LOW, like below unity. The volume of the cranked Marshall is actually dialed down by the TD. That imparts some of the TD character without getting so compressed and garbled. Of course he's also using an Echoplex w/ preamp, but that's a whole different rabbit hole. Great vid gents!
@JamieTyson
@JamieTyson 2 жыл бұрын
Good call! It seems he varies the gain of the Tube Driver seems to vary as well- probably much less gain than was used on this video. It would have been nice to hear it with lower gain into the overdriven amp here. I find that it retains the warmth and smoothness while getting rid of the slightly harsh or overly saturated sound Dan and Mick had with the Tube Driver into an overdrive amp. As an aside- Butler designed the tube driver and the overlord. And the tube king!

Effectrode tube drive... not there but my favorite valve pedal, hands down. You can saturate it more than a real Marshall pre-amp. It doesn't sound like a pedal or an effect; it sounds like a loud amp. Lots of compression, fat tone, simple controls; can't ask for more. And it takes three easy-to-swap 12AX7's, so the 12AX7 choice also affects the tone.

As weird at it may sound, on some amps putting the EQ at zero actually works really well. Especially when using pedals. You go from zero on amp eq with presence to taste and use your OD pedal, dial in the pedal and then up the eq your amp from there to taste. Kinda how you're running pedals before and into the tube driver, except the tube driver would be your amp.

I agree about the tone section. But that's indicative of a poor design. T C pedals are designed so the whole sweep on the tone pots are usable. If a pedal is only good 0 to 3, or 7 to 10 the pot should be just covering that range w a bypass cap or 2 if needed.

Interestingly on the occasions that I've used Valve OD"s I've often found as well as them working better with amps with some clean headroom (Not my Magic Amps Brit MK2 AC15 style!) I've also found that using the amp's low input is also often a good option. It seems to tame some of the attack transients and over-compression.

Really interesting! I agree about having a video with these into some solid-state amps. A couple more video ideas/request: 1. A crash course on tone terminology (fizzy, sizzly, spongey, etc.) 2. Getting a prominent CCM guitarist on the show to talk about church tone (Nigel Hendroff, Jeff Kunde, Michael Pope, etc.). I play mainly in a church setting, so it would be very helpful for me and for any other guitarists that play in a house of worship. I just want to say that I love the videos, guys! I picked up lead/electric just over a year ago after many years of rhythm acoustic, and this channel has been a life-saver for what gear to buy and how to use it. I always come away from your videos, and my tone is infinitely better because of it. Thank you for what you do!

I am late to this party....just watched this wonderful show from 2016.....now it's 1-20-18, and I loved the "tube preamp floor pedal" idea. For years I used a BK Butler Tube Driver to boost my lead channel of my MK3 Boogie. It was a WONDERFUL sound. And as long as I didn't turn the gain really high on the Tube Driver, it was not a noise-fest.....just super fat and warm, with sustain for days....and I had a lot of guitar players tell me "you shouldn't do that...tube distortion into tube distortion".....until they heard my rig....then they didn't say much.....I also have used a Damage Control Solid Metal Tube distortion the same way....wonderful sound....just goes to show that there's no right way or wrong way to do this tone quest. Trust your ears.....!

+Martin Jakobsson Actually, I've been wondering recently about the differences in how all pedals react to solid state. SS clean channels are super-dry and seem like a great place for layering FX onto, but as we all know, SS distortion can be a bit harsh sounding. I think it would be a really interesting video if the guys were to discuss solid state amps and how pedals - especially fuzz / OD / distortions work differently with them. I know solid state amps aren't popular, but a lot of people do own them.
@periloustemple8290

I did not like it very much for a driven sounds, but with an eq its not so bad with a solid state. That said, BK Butler originally built his to warm up keyboard sounds. When he started it was two tubes - which still seems like a better idea, but he's a pretty smart guy. In both the King and TD's, its an opamp hitting the valve. IMHO, modeling and solid state might actually better than trying to get the valve warmth from opamp/starved plate valve into solid state.

The tube-based pedals I like are the Electro-Harmonix English Muffin and DeLisle Eighty-Sixed, the former using a pair of 12AY7s and the latter an EF86 (of course) along with a 12AX7. The DeLisle has an optional line level output so you can use it as a proper preamp into a dedicated power amp or into the return input of an effects loop (thus bypassing your amp's preamp section). IMO both pedals work best into clean amps.

The reason I haven't gotten into valve drives- one reason anyway- is the power issue. They never run on 9 v center neg. like all my other pedals. This leads to me invariably plugging the power lead for my valve drive into one of my other pedals by mistake- and it fries whatever you plug it into instantly. I have seen a few that run on 9v but, I was told by the JHS show that if a valve isn't powered at a high enough voltage it won't work right- and that this means a lot of the 9v pedals that have valves- just having a valve stuck in them with a light in it- it's not really doing anything. In the end I decided having a tube amp was good enough and I would just stay away from the valve pedals- but I really like that Butler Tube Driver, Gilmour is my hero. It's very tempting to give it a go- and label my power leads.

I had an overlord in the late 90's and loved it. But, knowing more about how to set up guitar tones now, I'm not so sure it would be my bag. Which is funny because I find I tend to lean towards more edgy, less refined tones. I like boutique pedals, but tend to also like the vintage Boss pedals or Joyo pedals that seem to be a bit less smooth sounding.

Some love for the English Muff’n!! Unlike some of these 9v pedals it takes its own hefty 12vAC supply which I think makes a difference. Can be a little fizzy in the high gain ranges, but I use it always-on at low gain, high level for boost and color. When I switch it off, 75% of the joy goes away!

Excellent video Dan. Mick, the playing at the end was wonderful. I have to admit, though I could clearly hear differences when switching amp/pedal combinations, there were occasions when I "thought" I heard the opposite of Dan's explanation of what was happening. Untrained ear? It was most notable with the TubeDriver into the compressed amp...which I though sounded more open, with more clarity than with the BluesDriver.

David G. has said something to the effect that he sounds like himself regardless of the equipment. I think there is wisdom in this view. Proper gear should brings out the guitarists voice, not alter it beyond recognition, unless that is your goal.

At the end of this you touch on the secret to making these play nice with your other pedals, I think. In earlier videos you’ve spoken about why an EQ is an essential part of any chain. My old GE-7 is invaluable in taming some of the hairier sonic artifacts that a valve OD can generate while still giving you a solo boost. A question I had while watching this was where in the signal chain you would recommend placing a valve OD: before or after a TS type pedal?

Did you get it rerouted or use a bucker sized p90? I put p90s in all of my bridges because I'm a heathen and love love to hear how people do it. I've played some amazing bucker sized ones but I swear there's a lil jangle you lose. Giant fan, btw. Y'all are the best guitar channel on KZbin and it isn't even close

Love the start of the video ~ way to make a lick completely your own! Great episode (yet again) guys. I'm always impressed how well the little Boss Blues Driver stacks up against the big boys. They all sounded pretty good IMHO, loved the fullness of the Tube Driver. Mick, they're only three notes but can you tell what they are in that ascending signature Eric Johnson lick you play? Regards from NZ, kia kaha JIM.

Could you give us a video demonstrating your suggestions on how to use effects such as Chorus, Phase, Flanger, Delay pedals with clean, crunch and overdriven settings, so that the effected sound remains transparent and not overly dominate the natural sound of the guitar and amp. In addition could you explain methods you use to stop digital distortion and artifacting from being heard.

The Hermida Audio Zendrive 2 into a Fender Blackface Deluxe Reverb will get you into the territory of "Holy Grail" tone. These pedals are very rare now and increasingly costly since they are no longer being made. The Dumble amps that inspired the pedal... well, you know the rest of the legend. "It's disappointing you Pedal Guys didn't feature the Zendrive 2 in this segment" said I, the guy commenting two years later!
