Life too short for long KZbin videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
In this episode we revisit the not-so-humble Tube Screamer after our first video... that you can watch here: • That Pedal Show - Four...
After doing that, we had a lot of requests to see a follow up with some of the pedals featured in this episode. They’re all derived from the Ibanez Tube Screamer but all head off in slightly different directions.
Mick’s Keeley-modded TS-808 is probably our favourite Tube Screamer, so we use that as the benchmark and explore each of the other pedals. Let’s go…

That's the reason why i love "That Pedal Show"! In all of the video review out there there are those who shreds all the time and those who are the bluesman that have only two bends and that's it.. no one use the pedals for their purposes, just show off, but here.. maaaan.. you can see the real deal with two guys that have a GREAT TONE in their hands, plus great knowledge and coherency. Great work guys!!!!

Very nice lads. In my wet/dry rig (thanks Dan) I use a Green Rhino into my my AC10 for my drive/attack side and it is the tone I constantly come back to. The mids cut through everything, even with a keyboard and harp as accompaniment. I thank Jeorge Tripps for the added EQ every time I play. Cheers.

That Pedal Show i have a problem. i have a "tube screamer" type pedal, the MXR Il Torino, which is allmost the same as the Clarksdale, the problem is that the Il Torino inverts the phase of my sound, and that sounds awfull when i try to play stereo... do you guys have a suggestion on how to solve this problem?

@Robstafarian I have a Keeley Red Dirt Germanium It is a kick ass pedal thats never leaving my board
@larsfrederiksen3005
@larsfrederiksen3005 6 жыл бұрын
@João Dias: There should be a law against any product that inverts the phase! You need another phase-inverting pedal in series with it (or get someone to add an inverting buffer to the pedal itself). Or you could leave it on always and flip the leads that go to the speaker of that one amp. Not a good solution :-) Or you could put the pedal in a loop (if you have that option) and use a cable that is wired to flip the phase in that loop.

The green rhino is the best bang for your buck. Flexible and tweakable enough to let you cover A LOT of ground beyond the 808 thing, but not too overly complicated, so no option paralysis there for me . Doesnt kill my AC'15s chime like the classic circuit does. All the strengths of an 808 but none of the weaknesses. Also, its VERY quiet

Wow, you seriously prefered the Black Secret to the Iron Horse? That's quite a statement :) I've got two questions for you: 1) Why did you prefer it? 2) Was the Iron Horse a version 1 or the recently released version 2? I'm very curious to know your opinion since I too own a Black Secret :) I've never tried the Walrus Audio Iron Horse but it definitely looks like a great pedal judging from the few demos I listened to.

Really great video. Been enjoying your channel for a while now. This particular video is an interesting watch for me. I ran a blues jam at my local pub every 3 months for years where I supplied all the amps, drums and pedals and players just brought guitars/drumsticks. People would pay a £5 charity donation to jam. I would change the overdrive pedals available each time. Some I would buy second hand, some borrowed and some I already owned. The TS-808, Boss OD-3 and EHX Soulfood were the most popular... But my personal favourite was the Danelctro Fab Drive. £12 brand new! Absolutely awesome sound. Would give a tubescreamer a run for it's money every time.

Just read this on Keeley's website re: the Red Dirt:- The Red Dirt came out in 2012 and is currently on tour with John Petrucci and Devin Townsend to name just a few. It is essentially all of the Keeley mods wrapped into one pedal. It also features one really important addition, the JFET input buffer. A mod that couldn’t be done to the old screamers is a JFET input buffer change.

Rewatching this episode because I was trying to decide between the Clarksdale and the Plumes. Now I'm thinking about the Red Dirt and Green Rhino as well. Not to mention my new found conviction that I need a Marshal Plexi more than anything else.

21:38 Finally someone found the Palisades' gated fuzz sound! You crank everything and use the boost to control the level.

funny thing - I got an 808 and 2 weeks later the switch didnt work - after looking into it i see that is pretty common - too bad cuz for all these ts units i just want the basic - but not if it has issues with reliability - so now i have been watching all these vids trying to figure out what to do - went w the clarksdale anyone else have that problem w the switch in the new 808s? sux

Very educational! I'm a huge TS808 lover. I love my stock one, and I prefer it to my Maxon OD808, Boss SD-1, and MXR Classic Overdrive, but those are nice flavors of the TS recipee as well. :)

Just now seeing this - only recently became a TS user and fan. I think it’s cool that Mick is obviously a TS guy but he’s not always pushing them when the subject is not TS style drives.

Hi guys, what do you think about the 'clean mix' knob that comes with some TS pedals (newer Moonshine, Ibanez Nutube, Route 66)? I had a Maxon 808 that had this 'Balance' knob instead of 'Drive', and I think it did adjust the level of overdrive together with the balance of clean and dirty signals. Is that how it is with classic TS808?

I own a Fulltone FD3 and like it a lot (although I do not recommend if your setup is already on the dark/bassy side of things). The "90's" mode is basically a Tube Screamer. Does anyone know which Tube Screamer model (and mods) would it be more similar to?

Fulltone pedal line into a Fender HRD episode? That's super self serving, but hey I know what I like. Also, ESP Japan makes some amazing classic style S/T/LP guitars.

Great show and great seagull stories. I'm so glad that you included a Palisades in the lineup. Happy Birthday, Mick! I just bought myself a birthday present too (although my birthday is still a month away). It is one of the new Brothers pedals from Chase Bliss Audio. I hope that Joel sends you guys one to review in a future show. I would love to see how it stacks up against the King Of Tone.

Love the video guys. Red Dirt and the Moonshine were my top two as well! I think the Red Dirt got closer to the 808 and yet I think* I slightly preferred the Moonshine anyway. All of them sounded great, though.
