Meanwhile Petty Pierre lives in a 19 room mansion with a fulltime housekeeper and a cook and a car with driver all paid for by the Canadian taxpayer. Jagmeet's holding off an election for his pension of $66,000 a year, which since he'll be a party leader for years yet he will get. The subsidies are used offset operational costs imposed by the govt. Take the subsidies away, and Oil and Gas leaves the country. It might be a big producer to us, but its a drop in the bucket compared to the US. They don't need our oil, they just keep us in business. The Govt lobbies Industry, Industry Comes, then the Govt Taxes industry with Enviro fees and permits and all the admin, Industry says whoa no thanks and leaves, then the govt offered subsidies to pay for the newly incurred costs. Been that way 100 years.

@brodieobrien-pickering2202 thats only recently since they started producing fuel from light sweet. Previous to 2020 they were predominantly on heavy sour becquse its easier to refine and you get more other stuff out of it. Now that they lead the world in refining light sweet and no one else uses it, they'll suck up what they can while its cheap for them. Once the market is saturated, heavy sour will be cheap again. They don't need us so much as we're currently most convenient. They have far more sources than just us. Technically the US is energy independant anyway. They don't need anyone, but cant make money without money. Its the circle of economic life, theres no loyalties.

@delningit7033 that's wrong. While we do produce a small amount of light sweet, the oil sands predominantly produces heavy sour. The usa oil is light sweet and they export that. Their refineries are for heavy/sour oil, that we are their main supply off.
