The set design and costumes for this movie are just so perfect. I can't think of another film that fits so perfectly, visually, script, character depth, humour, drama, everything. If it was a huge war with thousands of pilots the civilian air sector might not have been big enough to accomodate everyone. Same thing happened after WWII, a lot of pilots became mechanics or changed careers. Also in this world cars don't seem simple to drive at all and their controls look more like an aircraft's, so him being a pilot still helped get the job probably.

The only real issue I have with asking a tweaker if the gun is loaded, it's not going to end well from that side of the gun....
