- The Symphony of the Seas is a really big boat. With 22 restaurants, an ice rink, a 9-story zip line, robot bartenders, theaters, water slides, and climbing walls, who’s got time to look at the water? It's the world's largest cruise ship.
- A cruise ship can roll to almost 60 degrees before it's in danger of tipping over! Plus, cruise ships are built to withstand 50-ft waves.
- Cruise ships are surprisingly well-prepared for all bad weather Mother Nature has in her bag of tricks. They're designed to handle even severe storms during the hurricane season.
- Usually, no more than 30 ft of the vessel sits under the water, which is only about 10% of the ship's overall height.
- If you look at a cruise ship's hull, you'll notice its unusual shape: it's wide and rounded. This helps the vessel to move smoothly and with minimal drag - that's a force which slows a ship down.
- Even though a cruise ship towers above the surface, its center of gravity is far below the waterline.
- Buoyancy, low center of gravity, and ballast keep a cruise ship stable. But there is one natural phenomenon that can still put this vessel at risk, and it's not wind!
- Being equipped with plenty of modern gismos, cruise ships still try to avoid or outrun any serious storm they're likely to come across.
- Most cruise lines have an opportunity to observe all their ships in real time and change their routes if there is a hurricane, typhoon, massive storm, or fog ahead.

I’m an Engineer. You just need a heavy bottom and a light top. Been through rough weather as well when I was in the Navy on smaller ships. Cruise ships may roll but they can handle it.

To sum it up, it’s the density of the water that will always be bigger than the ship, unless there was a ship heavier than all the water in the world combined which is impossible, so the density of the water (mass) is bigger than the ship (mass) which is why it floats

I like ocean liners better. Sadly there's only 1 Ocean liner today that's currently active. The queen Mary 2. I get it though, most people prefer cruises where they can do round trips,(i.e. leaving Europe, then returning to Europe sometime later) where as ocean liners were specifically for getting passengers from point A to point B. (i.e. Europe to the US.)

Only reducing the CG wouldn’t be enough. What should be paid attention to is GM. If that’s positive obviously and big enough, it can not only save the vessels from capsizing but also reduce the rolling. Ideally, a ship should roll, provided that it’s not too stiff, otherwise the rolling period will be short and it will be jerky.

When I was on the queen Mary 2 we had to go through a storm with 40 foot waves (no exaggeration btw) and we were at the front and yes view was terrifying my dad got sea sick but I was ok we were at the front of the boat and saw us plowing through every wave in our path

Yeah in the Poseidon adventure the Rough wave was longer, also the the Rough wave also hit the Poseidon on its side, and capsizing the ship. And also i like the 1972 version better

If I remember correctly, the Poseidon story was inspired by a true event, when a rogue wave hit the Queen Mary I think. And did the Queen Mary think that day ? It did not 🙂 In the movie, the rogue wave, as you mention, is nearly as long as the ship, which is quite unusual.

Sry but Bs comment... It was human failure of maneuvering the ship in the right way. The Iceberg scraped open 5 compartments at the side of the titanic which led it to sink. Experts say if the captain just hit the iceberg face on like they do with giant waves, the ship would've survived.

Actualy rouge waves aren so much an issue, a rouge wave is defined as a wave that is 3 times the size of the avarage waves at the time.. things that are wave related and can be dangerous to large ships, synchronous rolling, an parametric rolling.. but the bridge officers are trained to deal with these things
