Did the mastitis cow show up on your collar monitoring system? Shame you couldn’t send some of the rain over to NSW. We are going to have a bad Summer again.

What feed are you calling PK??? Is it a byproduct??? As for mastitis I am surprised that you do not have more issues with the wet weather and the cows on pasture all of the time. The reason I am saying that is we had very little trouble with mastitis when the cows were in the free stalls. The second you would let them out on pasture they would start to have mastitis. The last ten years we milked we kept the milking cows in the free stalls other than part of the day on a dry pasture for exercise. Also our production always dropped when the cows went out on pasture for any length of time. We could control their feed intake much better with the TMR ration without much grazing. Our daily herd average ran 80-90 LBS. per head per day. So we babied them as much as possible. Between fans and coolers in the summer to controlled ventilation in the winter we tried to keep them stress free as possible.

pk = palm kernel.The pulp left after oil is rendered from the kernel is formed into "palm kernel cake", used either as high-protein feed for dairy cattle. so it is a byproduct that is sometimes discarded.

Do you ever have fly problems? I don't believe I have seen many there. What actually is PK?
@HootMaRoot
@HootMaRoot Жыл бұрын
PK is the byproduct from making palm oil, similar to how the UK, Europe and America use the byproduct of soya beans and maize after they have made oils, ethanol, sugar

PKE is palm kernal extract/expeller. It is the by-product of palm oil manufacture. It is a relatively cheap supplemental feed compared to soymeal and canola/rape meal although it has lower nutrient content and is a bit more indigestible. It is widely used in New Zealand dairy farming.

Flies can be an issue in NZ some years (nothing compared to Australia with people doing the Aussie hand wave to ward off flies) Biting flies come out in the warmer months to annoy cows and other types of flies etc fly strike can be an issue for sheep/ sheep farmers. From the NZ 'Landcare Research' webpage "New Zealand has about 20,000 species of insects, and many of these still require an official scientific name (genus and species names).

I'm torn between them and a slatted floor, The thing with composting barns is that you have to buy wood chip every year and its actually quite an expensive ongoing cost. but I will try and do a video on that topic at some stage soon
