When Brian May heard this cover, he was amazed that they had reproduced his guitar solo, complete with the wah-wah. And Mitch Grassi is the only person I could imagine to carry the vocals of the legendary Freddie Mercury.

Kevin has a beautiful tenor voice, and sings on several songs (usually ones he thinks are important, like Imagine, Mary Did You Know, and the glorious Amazing Grace - faith is very important to him). He's also an amazing cellist, and plays on some of their songs (Shallows is so beautiful).

They really paid homage to the original, and yet made it entirely their own! Keep going with PTX for even more amazement. Enjoying your reactions!
@ilonahesseling48212 ай бұрын
Without making, it entirely your own, you can't honor the original. You really have to understand the song, it's meaning, it's architecture, the person(s) that are singing/playing the song. It's not just learning the lyrics and the notes, it takes much, much more. It took PTX over 4 years to make this cover and another year to bring it to perfection. What I adore so much in the work of PTX is their respect they show in every song.

The Grassi Guitar does not require a megaphone. It is just a prop to draw attention to who is making the sound. I heard it done live and it was EPIC. Might be the only cover that they did that was not an upgrade. This is an iconic song and the best cover in my opinion.

Thanks for another great reaction. It's fun watching people react for the first time to music I love. Concerning the title -- your pronunciation of "bohemian" was correct. Think of "rhapsody" as three separate words -- rap so dee. Most people don't realize it, but the title actually means something and fits the song perfectly. Bohemian refers to a sub-group of people who haven't fully adopted the norms of the larger society. Examples would be gypsies, hippies, and beat-nicks (from the 50's and early 60s). They often are associated with the arts, like song, dance, and painting. Rhapsody has several meanings, but in this context it is a term from classical music. It is a piece that consists of vastly different parts yet that somehow fit together.
@acorrado55292 жыл бұрын
I enjoyed your reaction--thanks! This was a hard video for them to make as they were trying to balance on a moving couch that tipped over easily on a very cold night while they nailed all their parts perfectly. There is a behind the scenes video of them making this video. Kevin the beatboxer does have a beautiful voice when he sings; Please check out his solo channel Kevin Olusola (KO) starting with his covers of "Down" and "Sign Of The Times". Kevin's talent is immense as he is a world class cello and saxophone player that can produce his own music as well as the beatboxing and singing.
@kritterlu41602 жыл бұрын
I also love their covers of "Radioactive", featuring Lindsey Sterling (violinist), and Kevin "Cello boxing" - a term he coined himself. Love "Come Along", and "Havana". Their cover of "My favorite things" is so unique. When Julie Andrews sang it in "Sound of Music", it was a sweet rendition. PTX placed darker tones to their cover. Someone rightfully referred to it as " A group of vampires sitting around the table, inviting you for dinner". As for originals, Kirstie wrote and sang main lead on "Love me when I don't ". Scott and Marc wrote "Thank You", and Scott takes lead playing the piano. Enjoy their many, many talents !!

I totally agree. I’ve always thought of their version of My Favorite Things as Julie Andrews colliding with the Mad Hatter Tea Party.

Kevin is another lyric baritone (like Scott). We don't hear him sing often because he's generally too busy taking care of percussion, but when he does sing his voice is beautiful, exactly as you would expect from a member of Pentatonix. A "lyric baritone" has a voice that extends above baritone into the tenor range and below it into the bass range, which is why another person posted that he's a tenor.

So many groups and individuals have covered this song over the last 45+ years that it is insane and each tries to put a bit of a spin on it because well, NOBODY can be Freddie Mercury, he was a one-off so nobody with any respect for music or vocalists would even try. This group does a great job, they really do have so much talent and because of the intense instrumentation of this song, it is perfect for them. Thank you for your reaction.

I always tell people to watch/listen to the Queen original first, and then this one... it's amazing how closely they track to the sound and feel of the original, from the way the opening is almost identical (down to the left/right panning on the "Little high, little low"), to mimicking the piano transitions, to the drum riffs. The harmonies are amazing, and Mitch's "guitar solo" (and a second smaller one near the end) are outstanding. Nobody is ever going to top Queen on their masterpiece, but for my money, this is the best cover you're going to hear.

Rhapsody is pronounced wrap (like you wrap a present) sodee (like soda except you say ee at the end instead of the a sound). The emphasis is on the WRAP part. All you music nerds, please correct me if I'm wrong, but a rhapsody is a piece of music that if "free flowing" and can have different elements in it. Another really great rhapsody is George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue (warning--it's instrumental and waxes on the "classical" music slant of things and that isn't everyone's cup of tea--but I love classical stuff--bring on the Mozart, please!).

Amazing artists. Amazing voices. That being said, and it may just be the audio quality of this recording, Freddie Mercury had a bit more "power" in the higher notes. He was truly a one of a kind vocalist.
@kayecastleman63532 жыл бұрын
There's no way that Pentatonix can sound like Queen, which is why they've created their own version of that iconic song. Besides having no instruments, which makes it almost (almost!) impossible for them to recreate the music of Brian May, one of the top rock guitarists of all time, Queen also had no bass singer. So all of Avi's bass line didn't exist in the original. Still, PTX kept the pathos and excitement of this ground-breaking and legendary song. Gotta love their fearlessness in tackling it, and creativity in pulling it together.
@ptxlvr71502 жыл бұрын
Couple of things you missed, and I didn't see anyone touch on. First when you saw the shooting stars, that was in respect of the original members of Queen. Second, the Mitch and his megaphone, was the major guitar solo. This actually applies to the original Queen version, according to the Queen movie I watched a few years ago, This song was Freddie's coming out song. When it talks about "just killed a man, put my gun to his head, pulled my trigger and now he's dead" that was the Bisexual Freddie killing off the closeted Freddie, I can't remember the rest, but as you go through the song, keep that in mind, and some of the randomness starts to make sense. I enjoy watching you because your so real. You actually said both words correctly, then you doubted yourself. another comment explains very well how to say it correctly, but it looks harder than it is. see you in the next video.
