Yep. I always preferred this first one immensely to the sequel and couldn't understand why so many people loved the sequel, let alone preferred it as superior to one. But as I've gotten older I've come to appreciate Family Values as at least the first movies equal, and maybe even better... It is just so funny. All the summer camp stuff is hilarious and Wednesday's saltiness is fire; Camp councellor- "We need a victim" Ditzy blonde- "I'll be a victim!" Wednesday- "...All your life." 😂👍

It's an effect stolen from Bela Lugosi in the 1931 film "Dracula". Every time Dracula was using his hypnotic power, his eyes were lit in this same band. It was also used in only one scene with Lucius Malfoy in "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets". Lucius shows up in Dumbledore's office at the end of the film, with Dobby in tow, and Lucius's eyes are lit this way. Why they did that, I can't figure out.

The sequel is "Addams Family Values" and it's every bit as good as this one. Joan Cusack plays a big role in the 2nd one and adds so much to the story. She's a great comedienne. The Addams Family was originally a beloved, Depression-era newspaper comic strip that was turned into a B&W TV show in the 1960's (just when all other new shows were debuting in color). It was very successful with other channels trying similar horror-based programming afterward, *Dark Shadows* and *The Munsters* most notably, *Bewitched* and *I Dream of Jeanie* coming from a much later stage of the same supernatural trend. This series of movies are pretty faithful updates to the franchise, which stay true to the original show's tone and feel. (I personally did not believe they would be -- and I was entirely skeptical of Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester. But it all works, very, very much like the original. I was wrong.) No other adaptations of the material retain the same feel. This movie was a work from real fans of the franchise.

@@saiyasha848Wednesday, the Netflix show, was fun but the characters did stray a bit from the movies. The love triangle was one example. Plus, she was portrayed as an angst ridden teen, when really she’s a sociopathic homicide killer. The backstory of Gomez and Mortician was also wrong. They wouldn’t be scared because he killed someone. They enjoy that stuff.

@willcool713 The original one-panel comics were by Chas (Charles) Addams, but it wasn't called "The Addams Family". I don't think it even had a name. @@saiyasha848The 90s animated series is much truer to the 60s show than the 90s movies ever were(no wonder with John Astin as Gomez himself), and in many ways also truer to the original new yorker Addams Family that Chas Addams made. It also had a far, far better Pugsley than the 90s movies. It should be remembered that modern Wednesday's harsh and snarky personality is basically just the original Morticia but as a kid, while original Wednesday (sad, moody and gloomy but also occasionally jolly and very much the meeker child between her and her genius brother) more or less doesn't exist as a character anymore, and it is largely the fault of the second 90s movie.

I love this movie and you are totally right that this type of movie wouldn't be made today. A lot of the great movies with adult jokes sprinkled in it like Addams Family and the Shrek series would be considered inappropriate today. When I was a kid those types of jokes flew over my head, so I don't really see what the big deal is. Its a shame really. And yeah, Morticia and Gomez are totally couple goals. My friends and I have, actually, talked about that. That there are so many great movies made in my youth that they couldn't get away with today. Part of me is sad, because it feels like there is a depth to them that is missing in today's cinema because everyone has to be hyper-aware of what and how they say things. But, on the other hand, it makes these old gems that much better, knowing that this kind of humor and wit won't be diluted with overexposure, like the spoof parody films. Movies like the Scary Movie series. The concept was fantastic, and funny for awhile, but it got overplayed to the point of being boring.

The Addams Family and Addams Family Values are a necessary double feature not to be missed. The second is supposed to be more about Fester but it's very Wednesday centric. Gomez and Morticia are relationship goals. Yes it was Fester. He was found in a tuna net and because Fester had total amnesia, she convinced him that he was her son. Addams Family Reunion is okay since it has Tim Curry as Gomez but the only original actor from 1 & 2 is Lurch. It's nowhere near as good as much as I love Tim Curry. It's a more "made fir tv vibe". Made for tv movies can be awesome but this isn't one of those.

She got her name from the old English rhyme - "Monday's child is Fair of Face. Tuesday's child is Full of Grace. Wednesday's child is Full of Woe. Thursday's child has Far to Go, etc..." Created in the late 1930's by Charles Addams, The Addams Family morphed from single-panel comic depictions into what we had in the sixties (and here). All the actors were great, but Raul Julia was so fantastic in his role as Gomez. You should catch some old TV shows from the sixties to get introduced to Thing, Cousin It, and the others. Dr. Pinder-Schloss let the cat out of the bag in the Library when she said she should've left him where she found him. The P.C. world is way too wimpy to have fun like they did here. BTW, I made a Tombstone Pizza in my oven the other day - it's a popular brand in most grocer's frozen food section.

This is still my absolute favorite version of the Addams Family. The thing to know about Addams Family is they came out at a time where tv and literature would portray these perfect families that were actually unhealthy and twisted beneath the surface. So Addams Family was the answer to that, showing a seemingly twisted and imperfect family in societies eyes there are actually perfectly healthy and loving. Gomez and Morticia are actually a healthy marriage and great supportive parents to their children.

What Morticia says in french on the begining is " Il me perce comme un poignard " (" It pierces me like a dagger " in english). And yes, it was the real Uncle Fester all along except he had amnesia when the false doctor found him. Now, you have to watch the second movie but before the 1991 movie, there was a black and white serie, and more recently, two animated movies. Of course, the series " Wednesday " is worth it. Christina Ricci (Wednesday in the movies) even has a role in it.

Don't even mention the animated movies!🤮🤮The TV shows has problems, but at least is saved by the aesthetic, the music and Jenna Ortega's flawless performance 🖤 the animated movies are just 👎👎! If you must watch a cartoon about the Addams better watch the '90s show!!

It is interesting that you bring up the confusion on if Uncle Fester is Uncle Fester. Originally, they were going to keep Uncle Fester as being the imposter, showing that despite not being an Addams by blood they would still consider him family. But testing found that not to be good, so they went with the amnesia plotline.

You’ll love the sequel, the original TV series, the Charles Addams comics it all comes from. The two animated movies from a few years back are a lot of fun but the first was the better of the two. And the show Wednesday is something you will love. Fun Fact: the girl scout who tries to peddle her cookies to Wednesday is played by Mercedes McNab, the actress who plays Harmony on Buffy

The Addams will always be my comfort place. Since I was a little goth girl who always felt out of place, this Family made me believe I could have someone who loves me for who I am like Morticia and Gomez, and the chance to have a loving and understanding family.

It's worth looking up the original drawings by Charles Addams. Gorgeous Gothic art. I have a book of them and the Barbie and Ken dressed as Morticia and Gomez. The box is their house. This movie and the sequel captures the essence perfectly. 🕷️⚰️👻💣🎃🕸️☠️🦇

The original creator of the comic wanted to depict the oposit of the all american family, that´s why Mortischa and Gomez are so obsessed with eachoter and in love, why they are so invested in their kids intressts why wednesday is such a caring and protective older sister, and why Pugsly goes along with all her antics .

The original comic was meant to comment on how families were often shown to be drama filled and hate each other, so they made a creepy/spooky family that is absolutely head of heels for each other. Gotta watch the sequel man, it is 2x as good as the original.

The Addams Family started out as a comic strip in the 1930's, since then they get re-invented and introduced to a new generation in a new medium every 30 years or so. In the 1960's they were a black & white TV show. You just watched them re introduced in the movies during the Nineties. And now the Addams's are re re introduced to us on a streaming platform in Wednesday (directed by Tim Burton). Each new iteration of the family is hilarious.

The most beautiful thing about this movie is that it was made in a time where the norm in television was married couples that hated each other and being (too) strict with children, meanwhile they are different in every way, they love each other very much and they support they children even when they don't agree with them!

As dashing as he was portrayed in these movies, I also like how they made Gomez in the recent series match the original art concept of how he was supposed to be when the family was originally envisioned so long ago.

Every character of the Addams Family is based off a classic horror archetype: Grandmama is a medieval witch, Morticia is a female vampire, Gomez is the romantic madman, Fester is the classic golem/hunchback, Lurch the Butler is a reanimated corpse (like Frankenstein's Monster), Pugsley is the classic asylum escapee, and Wednesday is based on Abigail Williams from the Salem Witch Trials.

When I was a kid they advertised this before Tim Burton became known for his gothic humor, and my parents ended up renting a few tapes of old black and white episodes. The sitcom was rather tame in comparison, but it did manage to nail some dark humor now and then. There was an old episode where Wednesday ran away from home. Her reasoning was that running away from home would make her parents weep and cry and she wanted to give them that experience. Her parents were so proud of her.
