Not as good as the fight in 'Exterminator City'. Oh, but of course that's two robots fighting, so obviously it's going to be better, right?

but the practical effects are really cool. I would say much better than todays CGI

I Loved the Movie Robot Jox. It was when movies did not give a shit who or whom they offended. Plus it was 1989 its a very good movie very ahead for its time.

Pacific Rim definitely took inspiration from this. In 1989 the effects were actually pretty decent. Shame that the writing and acting sucked.

This movie could be classified as an 80's movie. it was created in the 80's but due to Empire going bankrupt the film was not released until the 90's. by that time the cold war influenced movies were basically dead.

I really enjoyed your video and comments, even though Robot Jox is one of my favorite movies. I know it was B-rated at best, but it was also 1989 and I was 22 when I first watched it and was a big Battle Tech fan/geek at the time, and it was pretty much one of the few giant robot fighting movies created. Also growing up on 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s movies/TV shows it was considered pretty liberal too. My generation (Generation X) grew up during a great transition from backwards racism/sexism to equality and political correction. Looking over the span of the last 54 years it looks like we went from one extreme right to another. Now if anyone farts too loud or cracks a dry or unsafe joke they are shamed, canceled or crucified on the "Tree of Wokeness". Its really a shame how people take things to extremes, which should be real crime. Anyway I digress. Again nice video dude.

@1:45 written in the mid 80's, made in 1987. not 1990s @2:07 the robots are explicitly stated to be controlled via waldo manipulators. @4:40 & @5:00 Tex makes a lot of references to false luck/bad luck, because as you know he didn't win by luck. @6:00 first you complain about hand to hand training not being a useful skill, then when its pointed out that they've transitioned from ranged weaponry to "man-to-man" (the robot fists are slaved to the Jox' fists), you call the ref an idiot... @6:20 its been established that all international disputes that would otherwise be settled by war hang on these match. you complained about it already. now you ridicule how seriously someone takes a defeat. In the context of the narrative, they might have just lost a major war, the same war that is that character's entire raison d'être, its not just "team pride". @7:00 Someone finally subverts the "just in time" trope endemic to scif. This is not a bad thing, and its the tragedy that informs the audience of the protagonist's reluctance to heed the call to adventure. @7:30 the teddy bear was held by a little blonde kid in the establishing shot. Then we saw his own little blonde family member in the good-luck call. He sees the costs of his actions and failures, and it hits close to home. @13:40 its not about replacement or chauvinism. The entire build-up so far is guilt over the last match's death toll and the unfinished business with the antagonist. Its about not giving the antagonist a chance to hurt someone he knows personally. still selfish, but its crossing the threshold after refusing of the call. @14:10 its not a secret. he's the black hat, the audience is supposed to know this. When your intended demographic is twelve, you cant expect subtly on this point. @20:00 the producer went bankrupt towards the end of production, we get it. @20:10 yes, when some hijacks the pinnacle of your military might, you shoot to kill. Tubies are pretty much deemed disposable in this universe. @24:12 While Super Sentai Tokusatsu has a long history, production of Robot Jox predates Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger by almost 5 years. You even include the dates in the clip identifications. Are you implying the scene is bad because Sentai/Ranger scenes continued the legacy *afterwards*? @25:30 & @24:50 So when a combatant does something for dramatic reasons its dumb, but when one makes a sensible tactical move... its also dumb? What *would* be an acceptable move then? @26:20 Practically every 80s action movie ends with the good guy and the bad guy using up all there toys and resorting to slugging it out. its part of the genre. If you want to complain about the ending, its that the antagonist surrenders completely out of character. He basically tried to murder that universe's equivalent of the world-court. saying "we can live" and fist bumping RCA jacks ignores the war crimes and attempted murder. Seriously, no comparisons to Haldeman's other work? No context within the genre of apocalyptic and post-military SF? You berate the prop budget but say nothing of the practical effects. You re-upload it, but don't even go for the low hanging fruit of drawing parallels to release after your initial review (come on, Pacific Rim!). I understand your a creator and this is your shtick, and that complaining in the comments is less than constructive... but don't you think you're better than this? If you're going to take up the mantle of SciFi Guy, study your material and be authoritative, not whiny and vapid.

AHAHAHAHAHA! The 90's was not about being Politically Correct (1:46) It was about being an individual. Now its about being equal, aka PC.
@clearspira7 жыл бұрын
You're half right. Political correctness very much started in the mid '90s, but it was in a very different form then it is today. Back then it was more about giving men and women, blacks and whites, straights an gays an equal shot - or in your words, to allow them to express their individuality after decades of oppression. The problem was that after it achieved that, PCism morphed into a form of censorship that sought to force rather than enable.
