This is such an important lesson for riders to learn, it’s not hard to create a problem horse by reacting negatively to these situations. So important to know when to apply pressure and when to offer a release. I have a gelding who is barn sour and would previously flip his lid when taken away from his buddy. I used sort of an opposite approach to this - every time he went to rush back to his friend, I’d let him make the decision to go over there, but once there, I would make him work in small circles and make it hard for him. When I took him away again, I’d take the pressure off. Loose rein, relaxed body. I should mention I started this on the ground with a lunge rope as in the beginning he would rear and be quite dangerous. He is definitely still a horse-attached type, but he will listen now and I don’t get the crazy reactions anymore.

Tried this today, there is a corner that all the horses spook at. At first I walked beside the horse, and gave her a lot of positive feedback when walking past the corner. When I got up i continued with the positive feedback. She was eventually able to focus on the task in that corner, rather than focusing on shying away. Thank you!!

Thank you Miri! 💖 I discovered your channel a few days ago as I’ve been struggling with my powerhouse Gelderlander who’s taken to spooking and rearing every time we go in the arena. Your patience and enthusiasm is infectious and I’ve been watching all your videos anytime I’m not at the yard or asleep! You’re amazing and you deserve all the success and happiness in the world for the love and effort you put into not only your own but your fan’s equestrian lives. X

I'm glad I saw this! This is great advice. I have a small question for you - how might this sort of teaching apply if a horse that spooks on narrow bridle paths that have railings? My solution at the moment is to hand walk them past the spooky area, since there isn't any room to work them in a circle, but I would love to hear your thoughts.

I like this tutorial; it's very helpful for the spooky corners! There's a "spooky corner" in the indoor where I ride my pony at times. He's gotten better about it, but now I can't seem to trot past it myself since I seem to be "spooky" about it now lol! I always have to slow to a walk by that corner and continue on. I'm going to take your tips with me when I go ride in the indoor next!

Love this! Just a question what do you do when you don't know why or what your horse is spooking at?

Nicole Best try and use the same response sometimes if there is general tension by using the giving technique then you can help the horse feel more relaxed all the time. And the random spooking at nothing will hopefully start to diminish. X

Hey Miri! I love your videos! I was just wondering if you would possibly do a video on getting your horse to relax in the canter? My mare is so tense and only moves into a contact if she is tired enough not to fight. Any kind of half halt makes her shuffle forward and then break into trot. It doesn’t feel unbalanced just really rushed? And advice?

Emma Kieran I would help the horse work with pressure from the ground. To learn to draw towards the things it previously found scary 😊
